Five Players Added to 40-man Roster

The Indians added the following players to their 40-man roster today:

Adam Miller (RHP)
Scott Lewis (LHP)
Reid Santos (LHP)
Tony Sipp (LHP)
Wyatt Toregas (C)

The 40-man roster is now at 39 players.

Hi TL, great website. Are they going to add one more to the 40-man since right now it is at 39? And any chance they deal someone like Michaels or Delucci before the rule 5 draft in order to add more (and to improve the major league outfield of course)?

From what I know, the Indians left a spot open on the 40-man to add a player in FA or maybe a trade. There is also the remote possibility they take someone in the Rule 5, although I see that as unlikely.

No other players should be added, but it is possible some of the extra parts like Dellucci, Michaels, etc could be dealt....but even if this happens, they will not be adding more players to the 40-man from the minors.

What are the chances of us losing guys like Barton, Whitney, etc who have no received protection? Which guys are most likely to generate interest among other MLB teams in possibly drafting them?

Thanks.

Same commenter from above. Is there any concern that Sean Smith may be taken?

Re: Whitney....I don't see him being taken. 1.) he has yet to have an at bat above AA 2.) he is not versatile where he can play multiple positions in the IF and/or OF and 3.) still needs to prove that last year was not an aberation and that he can stay healthy. So, I'd be very suprised if he were taken.

Guys of significance who could be lost: Barton, Mulhern, Smith, Newsom, and Gimenez. Mulhern is a good player, but considering our depth at 1B his loss would not be great (nothing against him). Smith is a 4A starter and not much to worry about if we lose him. Newsom is a gimmick pitcher who would be valuable to keep, but because of our relief depth he may be better off with chance somewhere else. Barton could stick as a 4th outfielder in that he can play all three OF positions, he has some good speed, and decent power. He didn't grow as a hitter though last year, so we'll see. Gimenez is versatile where he can play anywhere on the field, including catcher, except SS and CF. Good raw power too, so he would be one I'd hate to see go.

They will probably lose 1-2 players.

Are you saying that Smith is a 4A pitcher right now, or that even if he continues to develop in the Indian system (not drafted in the Rule 5), a 4A pitcher is still all that he is projected to be in the end?

RE: Smith

Well, I this is purely opinion on my part based on the info, scouting reports and what I have seen of him in person. I just think he is average at best across the board as a pitcher, and at best is a 5th/6th starter in the bigs. Might be one of those guys who bounce back and forth between AAA and the majors, hence the 4A monicker. That all said, I believe he is what he is and his ceiling has been (or just about has been) reached.
