AFL Update

I had listed seven players the other day who were going to play in the Arizona Fall League, but apparently it will now be eight players. The addition from the previous listing is right-hander Carlton Smith. Here is the full list:

RHP Connor Graham
RHP Josh Judy
RHP Zach Putnam
RHP Carlton Smith
INF Josh Rodriguez
1B/OF/C Matt McBride
INF Carlos Rivero
OF Nick Weglarz

And yes, McBride will go out to the AFL and is expected to catch once or twice a week. This is an interesting development, and looks more like an opportunity to test his arm strength and see if he may be able to handle a more permanent switch back to catcher next year. This is of course a position of need as below Carlos Santana - who will be in Triple-A - there is not much catching depth at all at the moment. If he were to move back to catcher, he surely would be the everyday guy there at Akron next year.

Clippers lose again

Columbus had no answer for Brian Myrow and Ty Taubenheim as Indianapolis beat the Clippers 4-1.

After beating the Clippers with a walk-off single Tuesday night, Myrow started Wednesday's scoring with a solo blast off Kenny Ray in the first inning. Indy tacked on two more runs in the third with hits by Myrow and Jeff Clement. Ray went five innings before making way for Frank Herrmann.

Taubenheim held the Clippers scoreless over the first five innings, giving up just four singles over that time. He allowed a single to start the sixth and after getting an out, was lifted for Jeff Sues. Sues got a strikeout, but Wes Hodges drilled a double off the center field wall to score Brantley to make it 3-1. Sues then struck out Lou Marson to end the threat.

Myrow came up again in the seventh and delivered his second homer of the game and fourth hit overall for a 4-1 advantage.

The Clippers travel to Louisville to take on the Bats in the first of seven straight games. Carlos Carrasco pitches for the Clipper at 7:05pm.

Aeros Swept In Doubleheader

Akron was swept in a doubleheader for the first time since July of last season Wednesday night at Prince George's Stadium, losing 5-3 in game one and 5-2 in game two while missing a chance to secure a playoff berth. The Aeros (79-51) did see their magic number lowered to one to clinch a post-season spot with Erie's loss at Reading, while the magic number to claim the division title remained four over the Phillies.

Akron got off to a quick start in the opener, as Bowie starter Steve Johnson walked the bases loaded to start the game before surrendering a sacrifice fly to Beau Mills and an RBI infield single to Matt McBride as the Aeros took a 2-0 lead. The Baysox roared back in the bottom of the frame however, striking for four runs although three were unearned against Akron starter Jeanmar Gomez. Carlos Santana belted a solo home run in the top of the third to bring the Aeros within a run at 4-3, but Bowie added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth to account for the final margin.

The Aeros also opened the scoring in the nightcap, as Carlos Rivero singled home McBride in the top of the second. The Baysox got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by Steve Torrealba, and although Akron retook the lead in the third on Santana̢۪s RBI hit Bowie took command in the bottom of the frame. Miguel Abreu tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single, and with two down Aeros starter Connor Graham uncorked a wild pitch to plate the go-ahead run. Ambiorix Concepcion then delivered the back-breaker, grounding a two-run single back up the middle to give the Baysox some breathing room and finish the scoring.

Johnson (1-2) earned his first win for Bowie in the opener, while Gomez (10-4) suffered the loss for Akron. Eddie Gamboa (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the Sox in game two, while Graham dropped to 1-3. Santana did have a memorable night, as his walk in the first inning of game one gave him 83 on the season, breaking Ken Ramos' single-season record of 82 set in 1992. Santana is also up to 88 RBI this year, tying him with Tracy Sanders for fifth on the single-season list.

Akron will look for a split in this four-game series Thursday night at 7:05 p.m., as Josh Tomlin (12-9, 4.40 ERA) takes the mound opposite Bowie's Ryohei Tanaka (4-2, 2.27 ERA).

K-Tribe Back on Track With Win

Roman Pena hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a tie and giving Kinston a 3-2 victory over Frederick Wednesday night from Historic Grainger Stadium.

Ronald Rivas started the rally with a two-out infield single in the bottom of the sixth. Pena then stepped up and hit a triple to the gap in right-center field, scoring Rivas. Earlier in the inning, Pena threw out Frederick’s potential leading run at the plate. Kinston took an early 2-0 lead on RBI’s from Ole Sheldon and Doug Pickens in the bottom of the first inning.

Kinston got stellar defense combined with great pitching to hold on to the win. Paolo Espino (7-6) picked up the victory, giving up five hits and two earned runs in six innings. Espino walked two and struck out five. David Roberts picked up the hold for Kinston, throwing two innings of shutout ball. Chen-Chang Lee picked up his second save of the season, giving up one hit in the inning.

The Kinston Indians will battle Frederick in a Thirsty Thursday showdown at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 7pm.

Thompson Home Run Completes Captains Comeback

Mark Thompson hit his career high 11th homerun of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and lead the Lake County Captains to a 7-6 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Wednesday. Thompson had three RBI's in the game.

The Shorebirds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Joe Mahoney hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kyle Hudson. It went to 3-0 in the top of the second inning when Luis Bernardo singled home Xavier Avery and then scored on a triple by Hudson. The Captains made it a 3-2 game in the bottom of the second inning when Jeremie Tice hit a two run home run. The Birds added three runs in the top of the third inning when Levi Carolus doubled home two runs and scored on a fielding error and Delmarva led 6-3.

The Captains added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Thompson walked with the bases loaded and Delvi Cid plated a run on a ground out to cut the Birds lead to 6-4. The Captains tied it up at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Thompson doubled home Adam Abraham and scored on a single by Karexon Sanchez.

Captains starter Jason Knapp did not get a decision pitching two innings and allowing three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out two. Francico Jimenez (6-0) worked 3.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win. Steve Smith recorded his league tying high 24th save by getting out the final; two outs in the ninth inning. Shorebirds starter Nathan Moreau did not get a decision working 3.1 innings and allowing four runs on four hits, walking four and striking out six. T.R. Keating (5-5) allowed the Thompson home run and suffered the loss.

The Captains and Shorebirds wrap up the series on Thursday at 7:00 PM. Captains will send LHP Nick Hagadone (5-9, 2.889 to the hill to face LHP Cole McCurry (5-8, 3.01).

Eight Run 3rd is Key in Scrappers 11-6 Win Over Muckdogs

On Wednesday night, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers played game two of a three game homestand beating the Batavia Muckdogs 11-6. With the win the Scrappers are now 42-23, and a NYPL best 22-10 at Eastwood Field. The Scrappers magic number is currently six.

Scrappers starter Clayton Cook pitched the first four innings and gave up four runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out three. Austin Adams pitched the next three innings, allowed two runs, and recorded his first victory of the season. Tyler Studervant closed out the game pitching the final two innings, giving up one hit while striking out one.

The Muckdogs jumped out to an early lead scoring three in the 1st and one in the 2nd to take a 4-0 lead. The 3rd inning was the biggest of the season for Mahoning Valley. The Scrappers sent 13 men to the plate and scored eight runs on just four hits. The Scrappers were able to manufacture a few runs in the inning coming from a combination of walks, hit batsmen, an error, a stolen base, and a wild pitch. Consecutive doubles from Juan Aponte, Tim Palincsar and Jordan Henry topped off the inning giving Mahoning Valley an 8-4 lead. The Scrappers added two more in the 4th when Rafael Vera delivered a two RBI double. The Muckdogs added two runs in the 5th and the Scrappers capped off the scoring with a run in the 7th in the Scrappers 11-6 victory.

Thursday, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers are at home for the final game of a three game series against the Batavia Muckdogs. Marty Popham is scheduled to make the start for the Scrappers; he is 5-1 with a 2.81 ERA. Thursday's game starts at 7:05 PM and can only be heard online at mvscrappers.com.

Arizona Fall League Participants Announced

The Arizona Fall League (AFL) rosters were released on Tuesday, and while there are still some changes to be made to the rosters, the Indians at this point will be sending seven players to the AFL this year:

RHP Connor Graham
RHP Josh Judy
RHP Zach Putnam
INF Josh Rodriguez
1B/OF Matt McBride
INF Carlos Rivero
OF Nick Weglarz

They will play for the Peoria Saguaros who will be managed by former Indian David Bell. Low-A Lake County Hitting Coach Jim Rickon will assist Bell. The Indians have the option to send one player from below Double-A, and that is still yet to be determined on who that will be, if they even send anyone from below Double-A. There is still a possibility that 2009 1st round pick RHP Alex White is sent to the AFL at some point. The season begins October 13th and ends on November 21st.

Also, as an FYI, the Hawaii Winter League officially closed up shop last year since MLB pulled out and no longer would back the winter league there. Supposedly they are looking to have an additional fall/winter league stateside to complement the AFL, which could possibly be held in Arizona and run after the AFL concludes or be run at another location.

Game Recaps: Tuesday 8/25

Aeros Rally Late in 4-3 Win

Carlos Rivero opened the top of the ninth inning with a base hit and came around to score the winning run on an RBI fielder’s choice by Jared Goedert as the Aeros claimed a 4-3 victory over Bowie in the opener of a four-game series before 1,969 fans at Prince George’s Stadium Tuesday night. Akron improved to 79-49 and matched its season-high at 30 games over .500, while also eliminating the Baysox from division title consideration (Bowie can still earn the wild card). Coupled with Reading’s 8-5 win over Erie, the Aeros can clinch a playoff spot Wednesday night by either sweeping the doubleheader from the Baysox or winning one game and having Reading win again over the SeaWolves.

Akron opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second, as Matt McBride was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Lonnie Chisenhall lined to right, but singles from Rivero and John Drennen loaded the bases with one down and Armando Camacaro gave the Aeros a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to center. Jose Constanza followed with a liner to center to score Rivero and make it 2-0, although it was technically a fielder’s choice as Drennen misread the ball off the bat and was thrown out trying to go to third.

Bowie answered back with the two tying runs in the bottom of the third, although it could have been much worse. Three straight singles loaded the bases with no outs, but Aeros starter (and former Baysox hurler) Bobby Livingston limited the damage to just a pair of sacrifice flies from Josh Bell and Ambiorix Concepcion.

The Aeros pulled back in front by a run in the sixth as back-to-back doubles by McBride and Chisenhall made it a 3-2 game, but the Baysox answered again in the bottom of the seventh as Danny Figueroa drew a one-out walk from reliever Zach Putnam and twin brother Paco Figueroa doubled him home to tie the game at 3-3.

Akron would reclaim the lead for good in the top of the ninth however, as Rivero ripped a base hit to left to start the inning. Drennen followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt in front of the plate that Bowie catcher Steve Torrealba pounced on, but he hesitated in making the throw to second and the indecision cost him as Rivero was just able to slide in safely. Camacaro then moved both runners up 90 feet with a sacrifice, and the Baysox intentionally walked Constanza to load the bases and set up a force at the plate. Goedert spoiled that strategy however, grounding a ball sharply to the left side that shortstop Carlos Rojas smothered with a diving attempt, but his only play was a force at third base as Rivero scored the deciding run.

Putnam (4-2) blew the save but earned the win, giving up a run and a hit in two innings of work. His lone walk came around to score, and he struck out four. James Hoey (2-6) took the loss for Bowie, allowing a run on two hits in two innings. Neil Wagner entered for the ninth and struck out the side for his second save. Both starters pitched well in taking no-decisions, as Livingston held his former mates to two runs in six innings and Sox starter Tim Bascom allowed three runs in seven frames. Rivero paced the offense with a pair of singles and two runs scored, while McBride also scored twice.

Games two and three in this four-game series are set for a doubleheader Wednesday night, with game one starting at 6:05 p.m. Jeanmar Gomez (10-3, 3.06 ERA) is expected to start game one for Akron while Connor Graham (1-2, 4.07 ERA) will take the hill in game two.

K-Tribe Drops Fourth in a Row

Frederick ace Zach Britton shut down the K-Tribe as the Keys beat the Indians 6-1 Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Britton (9-6) went seven innings, giving up five hits and one run to earn the win. Britton struck out six and walked just one batter, lowering his ERA to 2.74 on the year.

The Keys jumped on K-Tribe starter Bryan Price (2-2) early, knocking him around for three runs on six hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. Frederick wasn’t any friendlier to K-Tribe reliever Jonathan Holt, who gave up three runs on six hits in 2 1/3 innings. Frederick scored in five of their first six innings, taken a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. Frederick banged out 13 hits on the night as every hitter in their lineup reached base safely.

Dallas Cawiezell and Kyle Landis held Frederick for the remainder of the game, combining for three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit.Kinston would score their only run of the game when Doug Pickens drove home Ole Sheldon with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sheldon and Pickens each had two hits for the K-Tribe.

With their fourth straight loss Kinston now falls one game behind Salem for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division with 12 games remaining. The K-Tribe will be back in action at Historic Grainger Stadium on Wednesday night against Frederick. Game time 7pm, Paolo Espino (6-6, 2.55) gets the start for Kinston.

Shorebirds Drop Captains 8-5

Levi Carolus drove in four runs and L.J. Hoes double three times to lead the Delmarva Shorebirds to an 8-5 victory over the Lake County Captains on Tuesday.

The Captains scored twice in the bottom of the second inning when Bo Greenwell grounded out and John Allman was able to score and then Roberto Perez scored on a throwing error and the Captains led 2-0. The Shorebirds scored and unearned run in the top of the third inning when Joe Mahoney doubled home Kyle Hudson, who had reached on an error, and it was 2-1. The Birds took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when Luis Bernardo singled home L.J. Hoes and then Greg Miclat tripled home Bernardo and Kyle Hudson and Delmarva led 4-2.

The Captains tied it up in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dan DeGeorge singled home John Allman and Perez to tie the game at 4-4. The Shorebirds regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two run home run by Carolus to make it 6-4 Shorebirds lead. Carolus singled home two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to up the lead to 8-4. The Captains added a run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch to end the scoring at 8-5.

The Captains sent LHP T.J. House (5-10) to the mound and he took the loss pitching five innings and allowing six runs, five earned on eight hits, walking one and striking out five. The Shorebirds started Chris Salberg (3-2) and he got the win working five innings and allowing four runs on four hits, walking three and striking out four. Cliff Flagello recorded the final out of the game to pick up his fifth save of the year.

The Captains and Shorebirds play game two of the series on Wednesday at 7:00 PM. Captains will send RHP Jason Knapp (2-7, 3.98) to the hill to face LHP Nathan Moreau (5-3, 3.40).

Scrappers Lose 7-3

On Tuesday night, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers started a three game homestand with a 7-3 loss to the Batavia Muckdogs. With the loss the Scrappers are now 41-23 on the season and 21-10 at Eastwood Field.

Scrappers starter Preston Guilmet pitched the first five innings and gave up six runs, five earned, while walking one and striking out four. Guilmet suffered the loss and dropped to 6-4 this season. Matt Packer pitched the next three innings and struck out for without giving up a run. Guido Fonseca pitched the final inning and gave up one run on two base hits.

The Muckdogs struck first in the 1st scoring one run, then adding a second run in the 4th, making it 2-0 Batavia. The Scrappers scored two runs in the bottom of the 4th on a Muckdog throwing error and a Jesus Brito RBI single. Batavia responded with four runs in the top of the 5th to take the lead back at 6-2. The Scrappers added a run in the 7th on a wild pitch, cutting the Muckdog lead to
6-3, but came up short in the end losing the game 7-3.

Wednesday, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers are at home for game two of a three game series against the Batavia Muckdogs. Clayton Cook is scheduled to make the start for the Scrappers; he is 4-3 with a 2.61 ERA.

Indianapolis tops Columbus 5-1

The Clippers lost in Indianapolis 5-1 Monday night. Clippers starter Ryan Edell allowed three runs in seven innings of work and Brad Lincoln pitched five shutout frames for Indy.

Indianapolis got on the board right away on a first inning sacrifice fly from Jeff Clement and tacked on two more in the fifth when Neil Walked drove in a pair with a double.

The Clippers were held in check all night long with the exception of one pitch thrown by former Clippers reliever John Meloan. The first Triple-A homer for Niuman Romero in the sixth inning made the score 3-1. Romero was the only other Clippers batter to touch third base all night, moving there again in the ninth after reaching on a walk.

Michael Tejera, fresh off of the disabled list, threw two innings allowing a two-run home run to Tagg Bozied for the final runs of the contest. Meloan tossed two relief frames allowing one run and Corey Hamman and Jeff Sues each authored a scoreless inning to finish off Columbus.

Late Outburst Leads to 3-1 Win for Aeros

The Aeros couldn’t even manage a hit until the top of the 6th inning, but still managed to pull out a 3-1 win over Erie before 6,952 fans at Jerry Uht Park Monday night. Akron improved to 78-49, while the SeaWolves fell to 66-60.

Erie got their lone run in the first inning, as Danny Worth drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on a two out infield single.

All was quiet for the next several innings, as even Josh Rodriguez’s lone hit for the Aeros was promptly erased on a double play. Jose Constanza finally woke the Aeros offense in the 8th with a two out double. Constanza advanced to third on a wild pitch, and was joined on the basepaths by Carlos Santana after he drew a walk. Beau Mills then followed and brought everyone home with his 13th homer of the year, nailing a nasty two strike curveball over that just bounced over the right field wall.

Steven Wright got the win in relief of Akron starter Eric Berger, running his record to a sterling 10-0 with two perfect innings of relief which included three strikeouts. Josh Judy closed things out for his 8th save of the year, but it didn’t come without some drama. Judy struck out the first batter he faced in the 8th, but then put the tying runs on with a single and a walk. Showing he can get out of a jam with style, Judy closed out the inning with two strikeouts and then struck out the side in the 9th to seal the deal. The final seven outs for Akron pitching all came by way of the K.

The Aeros now finish off this road trip with three games in Bowie, with tomorrow’s contest starting at 7:05 p.m. Akron has yet to name a starter while Tim Bascom (2-7, 4.22 ERA) takes the mound for the Baysox.

Results Take Backseat To Development For Haley

When asked about what he thinks about his numbers and season so far, 19-year old right-handed pitcher Trey Haley didn’t hold anything back.

"No, I am not satisfied at all,” said Haley in a recent interview at Classic Park. “I try not to look at them, but in my mind I know I can do a lot better.”

From a numbers perspective, the fireballin’ Texan has had a so-so year at Low-A Lake County this year going 3-7 with a 5.85 ERA in 16 appearances (13 starts). He has held opponents to a .240 average allowing just 58 hits in 64.2 innings. The most eye-catching stat of all his numbers is only 38 strikeouts but 58 walks allowed in those 64.2 innings.

But there is a lot more to Haley’s struggles on the mound this year than meet the eye.

Yes, Haley is young and raw, so the inconsistent performance and issues with command are expected for a kid fresh out of high school pitching against a lot of hitters themselves fresh out of college or out of Latin America with several years of pro experience behind them already.

However, with Haley the focus with him is not only reworking some of his mechanics and learning to adapt to those changes, but also primarily pitching with his third and fourth best pitch every night in order to get used to throwing and developing them.

“Right now I am really working on a four-seam fastball and changeup,” said Haley. “I have never thrown a four seam fastball before I got here and in Instructs [last year]. I used to just throw a two-seamer, but now they want to establish a four-seam fastball and kind of took the two-seam away. That is kind of their philosophy though to work on establishing command of the four seam fastball and then add the two-seamer back in eventually."

Haley’s two-seam fastball and curveball are his bread and butter pitches, both considered plus pitches in his arsenal. His two-seamer sits 91-94 MPH and touches 95 MPH, and his curveball has good depth and is a true weapon for him. Being extremely limited in how often he uses these pitches, if at all, is almost like him going into a fist fight with one hand tied behind his back.

"My curveball has always been good,” said Haley. “My two-seamer I think is my best pitch, but the curveball is my #2 pitch. I am just working on that four-seamer, and the changeup I think is coming along really well. In [a recent] outing I think I only had one walk and threw my changeup six out of eight times for strikes."

For a young pitcher like Haley who lacks a polished approach and is still growing on the mound and gaining maturity, learning to live with sub par results is surely frustrating. Haley had so much success in high school and in national showcases just raring back and firing with little thought of where it would go. He probably feels his numbers and performance would greatly improve if he were to do that now.

But, when it comes down to it he understands that in order to develop into a complete pitcher and be able to get hitters out at higher levels, he needs to have all of his pitches working well in his repertoire. That is why mastering his changeup and the four-seamer is such a key. The 58 walks in 64.2 innings is a large byproduct of such inconsistent command with those pitches, but if he can learn to harness the command of them it will only vault up his pitching ability.

"I just think I need to go out there and stop thinking [so much],” said Haley. “That's my main thing. In high school it is so easy in showcases as you just go out there and pitch and that is why I did so well, even against the top kids in the nation for the draft. Just go out there and pitch. Now that they are working on stuff I am out there pitching, but it is hard to go out there and actually pitch like I want to when they are changing things up. In the long run, I just think once something clicks it is going to be good."

Since Haley’s call to Lake County on May 18th, Lake County Pitching Coach Tony Arnold has been the one most directly responsible with implementing the organization’s plan to develop Haley’s secondary offerings. The addition of the four-seamer would help give him a different look with his fastball. It would still be hard but have little movement as compared to his two-seamer which has good sink and run.

Arnold likes what he has seen so far in the growth of Haley this season.

“He has gotten better with each outing,” said Arnold in a recent interview. “The whole thing with him is he has a live body. He is loose, tall, and lanky, so it is just a matter of him maintaining the tempo and rhythm within his delivery so that his body and arm work at the same speed. When he does that [like has recently], he is gonna be fine. If he can do that consistently he could come quick. His stuff is electric, and he has a good feel for a curveball and his changeup will come. When you stand behind him you see the makings of a good changeup, and with his velocity all he has to do is throw something offspeed that he can command consistently down in the zone.”

In addition to developing his secondary offerings, another area of focus for Haley has been with his mechanics since he has a tendency to overthrow. Coming out of high school he has had trouble maintaining his velocity and being consistent with his fastball, so the Indians have tinkered with his mechanics and delivery so he can become much more consistent with his fastball velocity and command.

“I have just been working on a lot of stuff in my bullpens mechanics-wise,” said Haley. “I have been working on getting out front and staying over the rubber. Keeping my stride on, and they have been working on my hands a lot. Just a lot of stuff I have been focusing in on."

Some may view Haley’s comments as a young kid who is not happy with where he is and who may be having second thoughts about signing with the Indians out of high school. That’s not the case at all. He was ready to get his career started and is excited about where he is currently as a professional. He also understood because he is so raw that when he signed the first few years would be tough and that it would take some time to mold himself into a very good pitching prospect for the Indians.

"Yeah, it's fun and I like it,” said Haley about being a professional baseball player. “It is not bad as I would rather be here than doing school work in college. Plus going to college I would just delay the process three years. If I went to college I would probably only be starting out in High-A in three years. I just turned 19 [recently], so if I went to college I would be 21 [when I start my professional career]. I hope by the time I am 21 I am up [in the big leagues]."

Arnold thinks Haley could someday realize that potential down the road of being a big leaguer.

“To me he is a treat to work with, he is a good kid,” said Arnold. “He is like everybody where he is getting into a routine which is helping him to improve and get better each day. It is fun to watch, and hopefully we are watching something special."

Lake County’s playoff hopes are slim at best, so their season will end in about two weeks. No matter what happens with their playoff fate, Haley has two or three more outings before the end of the season. A strong finish could provide a nice stepping stone for next season, one where he will likely return to Lake County in 2010 to start the season as the ace of the staff, but with a chance to move up around midseason to High-A Kinston if he pitches well.

"I just [want to] maintain my focus on the fastball and lowering the walks,” said Haley. “That's about it. I know my stuff is good enough, and most of the time when people score on me is when I put people on and then they will get a hit. [Their batting average against] me as far as them getting a hit is really low. It is just the walks. That is the main thing that kills me."

Four More Homers Power Erie

The SeaWolves pounded four home runs for the second straight game, including three in the bottom of the first inning, and never looked back en route to an 8-1 triumph over Akron before 3,101 fans at Jerry Uht Park Sunday afternoon. Erie improved to 66-59 and pulled to within a half-game of Reading for the wild card in the Southern Division, while the Aeros fell to 77-49. Reading's loss at New Britain also lowered Akron's magic number to seven to clinch the division.

The Aeros threatened in the top of the first, as Jose Constanza singled to start the game and Carlos Santana added a base hit two batters later. Erie starter Ramon Garcia doused the fire there however, getting Matt McBride on a foul out and Jared Goedert on a fly to center to end the frame.

The SeaWolves then went right to work in the bottom of the first, as Danny Worth ripped a double past Goedert at third base on Scott Barnes' first pitch of the game. Barnes then walked the next two hitters to load the bases, and Ryan Strieby made him pay with a grand slam to right-center to make it 4-0. Casper Wells followed with a solo bomb, and two batters later Santo de Leon went deep to push the margin to 6-0. Strieby homered again leading off the third and de Leon added an RBI double as Erie led by eight after just three innings.

Akron loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth but couldn̢۪t score, as Deik Scram threw out Jose Constanza at the plate on McBride's fly ball to left. A double play thwarted another chance in the seventh, although the Aeros finally avoided the shutout in the eighth on Goedert's RBI double.

Garcia (3-3) blanked Akron for 5.2 innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while not recording a strikeout. Barnes (1-1) was touched for eight runs and six hits in five innings before Carlton Smith and Neil Wagner combined to record the final nine outs in order. Akron out-hit the SeaWolves 8-6, with only John Drennen finishing without a knock.

The Aeros will look for a split in this four-game series Monday night at 7:05 p.m., as southpaw Eric Berger (1-1, 3.57 ERA) takes on Erie lefty Jon Kibler (6-8, 4.17 ERA).
