This is an unofficial listing of the Indians 2008 Rule 5 Draft eligibles. In the coming days, players from this list will be added to the Indians 40-man roster before the November 20th roster deadline. TJ Burton, Bubbie Buzachero, and JD Martin are the only names that jump out to me as Minor League Free Agents that we should re-sign. I think Matt Whitney would be a likely possibility to re-sign, as well.

Anyone else from that list do you think is a must re-sign or a likely re-sign?

Hey Jake, I think the only one on the MLFA list with "real" major league value at this point is Martin. I'd like to see him get rostered again. As for Burton and Buz, I think they are as good as gone.

Whitney and Romero are two others I would like to see resigned.

Thanks for the response, I definitely missed Romero when I read the list, I hope he re-signs.

It's going to be interesting to see what other moves we try to make to open up other spots for the 40-man.

Is Carlos Santana in danger of being selected in the rule 5? Will the protect him to prevent this?

Santana most certainly will be rostered.

Tony,

I understand your logic but am still relatively certain that guys like Rondon, Santana and others are still eligible under the new CBA rules since you can no longer but contracts in the future (yes it affects those players since the change of 3 to 4 adn 4 to 5 years does also). I really think these guys are all still eligible.

didn't barton get taken last year when he was in the same boat as Wagner and Herrman? i'm sure if the indians signed them to '06 contracts they future dated bartons also and he was still eligible. does that make sense?

I asked about Barton last year when he was eligible and why he was, and the explanation given was he signed a 2004 contract even though he did not play in 2004.

We'll know for sure by Nov 20th if Santana and Rondon are really eligible. If Santana is not rostered, then it is certain they are not eligible.

Why does Kelvin de la Cruz not appear on this list?

Because he is not eligible. For an explanation, go here:

Tony,

The confusion comes because you wrote an article on the 3rd (which mentions no confusion about his status)about who the Indians might protect and that is the first article about Cruz that is linked to him. I missed the clarification article and his name there and when it didn't come up as an article with his tag I assumed there was no new, news on him.

I went to check the future eligibles and I guess that had not been updated since you found out for sure because he did not show up anywhere on it.

Thanks for the help though.

Yeah, I apologize for the confusion. There was a minsunderstanding with the eligiblity of these guys for a few days there, but after some research and contacting of baseball officials I got it all clarified. Putting together the Rule 5 eligible list in future will be SO MUCH easier now that I have all this ironed out. haha

I´m from guatire, Venezuela, my english it´s no so good, sorry for that!!
What do you think about Hector Rondon(RHP)?
He is from my state and i want to Know when Rondon is eligible to Rule 5 draft?
Thanks and i apologize for my errors I´m a venezuelan boy....

Alex Romero.!!

Alex, your English is just fine....a lot better than my Spanish (which is very bad).;-)

As for Hector, he really burst onto the scene last year. he is no longer eligible for the Rule 5 Draft because the Indians put him on their 40-man roster. And, given his talent and abilities, he is not going anywhere and should be in the Cleveland organization for some time unless the Indians use him in a trade to get a big need.

I really like him. He pitches with his fastball well, a fastball that sits 92-94MPH but tops out at 96 MPH. That's some impressive stuff. I have not seen him yet in camp, but the word is he is really starting to fill out his body. This could be a big breakout year for him in Akron. Not a breakout prospect year since he is already a Top 10 guy, but a breakout in that he can really solidify himself as an upper echelon starting pitching prospect in all of baseball.
