2009 Minor League Depth Chart

Here is an up-to-date minor league depth chart. Again, this is not set in stone. While Columbus and Akron look pretty set aside from a few potential changes to the bullpen, the Kinston and Lake County lineups could look a lot different when spring training breaks. The bullpens in particular at Kinston and Lake County should be a highly contested camp battle this spring as there are a lot of good candidates to fill the roles.

02/03/2009 Update: Changed Matt McBride to the outfield and added newly acquired Mickey Hall to the outfield. Also, note, while Alex Castillo is listed as the starting Kinston catcher and Brian Juhl the backup, others like Michael Valadez, Doug Pickens, and Richard Martinez have just as god a chance to fill either spot in Kinston. Should make for a great camp battle this spring.

TL,

I see you still have McBride listed as the C for Kinston.

Oversight on the update or has more information surfaced since the interview on Smoke Signals??

Take it you're assuming Mujica gets cut and Jackson gets the last bullpn spot in Cleveland then?

And are you assuming none of the non-roster invitee bullpen guys make either the big league club or even the Columbus team? I find that kinda hard to believe.....

Also, did you forget Mikcey Hall? We got him for Byrd and cut Goeleski. I'd imagine he'd play in the Akron OF, but maybe I'm wrong....

Tony,

Could you elaborate a bit on the group labelled as "extended spring or release" ? I assume a fair number of those guys are actually ticketed for extended spring and then Mahoning Valley or Rookie ball. It was a little surprising to see some recently drafted guys(like pitchers Trey Haley, TJ House, Chris Jones, Heath Taylor) listed under a heading of "release".

I mean regardless of what combination of Huff, Lewis, Jackson and Sowers end up in Columbus....that is going to be a dominant team. Meloan, Sipp, Rundles, Miller and Newsom behind that starting corps is unbelievable.

Add in a lineup of Crowe, Brantley, Hodges, LaPorta, Aubrey, Brown, Toregas, Valbuena and Merchan. Good God.

LOL, you guys crack me up....can't get nothing past you guys.:-)

Seriously though, this is still a WIP as I was going to update it some today. I pushed the depth chart out last night 95% finished because I don't have my prospect rankings available at the moment because of my computer crash. (hope to have everything restored today!)

ANyway, yeah, McBride will primarily be in the outfield....but I am not sold on where. Most likely in Kinston to start, but a quick callup to Akron if he performs and adapts well.

As for the Buffalo makeup, I am of the belief based on what I have heard that all the minor league signings this year are more depth signings for backfilling in the event of trades/injuries. It will be a heavily loaded prospect team. I have minor league signings Merchan, Valdez and Ohka making the team. There were some other interesting FA signings, which if they do make the team will only be in place or Roehl (likely) and/or Sipp if he is not 100% healthy. I also see Mujica being put on waivers and Jackson making the team as the 7th bully guy. Again, not all of this may happen and it is debateable....but just use this as a basic framework of who likely starts where and what the gneral makeup of those teams will be. And I do have to add Mickey Hall.

As to the question pertaining to the EST/release.....yeah, all these players are either going to EST for more seasoning or to get ready for short-season ball in Mahoning or Arizona in June. Some of these players will be released, roughly 18-25 of them. Obviously, guys like House, Haley, Cook, Moncrief, Fontanez, etc all are going to EST to develop routines and are not exactly ready for full season leagues.

The starting catcher spot in Kinston is interesting. No high profile prospect slotted for the spot now that McBride is not catching....so a GREAT opp for one of the lower level guys to take the chance and run with it and improve their prospect standing. It really is a toss up to me among Juhl, Castillo, Valadez, Pickens, Martinez on who starts and backs up there. Should be one of the better camp battles to watch in spring, as while two get the kInston job, as many as 2-3 could also be released.

FYI, I updated the depth chart....and will continue to do so periodically until they are officially announced at the end of spring.

No Kelvin Diaz? Where is that Sasquatch these days?

Heh....guess we will find out soon enough in about a month!
