Spring Game Recap: 4/3

Here are the final minor league spring game box scores from Saturday's action. On Sunday morning all player who are heading for a full season afilliate will be leaving Goodyear, AZ bright and early and catching a flight to their new destination where the dream will continue as the regular season gets under way on Thursday night.

I'll have a final stats listing sometime this coming week with all the minor league spring stats, so be on the lookout for that. Happy Easter everyone, and here are a few quick notes on the box score results:

- RHP Steve Smith (pictured) apparently is so good that he can pitch in two places at one time as he supposedly pitched for Columbus and Mahoning Valley yesterday.  Of course this did not happen, but he is listed in the Columbus box score as having an awful outing going 1 inning and allowing 5 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk and had 1 strikeout to the nine batters he faced.  I have learned that he did not pitch this game, and that the one inning of shutout-hitless ball he threw for Mahoning Valley was him.  The Columbus listing is obviously an error, which is common with these box scores since they are logged by the players themselves.  I'll try and find out who the person was in that Columbus game that was masquerading as Smith and ruining his stat line.:-) (Edit to note: It was Carlton Smith, which I have since updated)

- 3B Jared Goedert finished up what was a very good camp for him on a strong note by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. I don't know his numbers overall yet, but when I post his final stats I believe they should stack up well against almost anyone not named Kipnis this spring. This is good to see with Goedert, as maybe if he is 100% healthy all year there still might be something in there and he can recapture some of that 2007 Lake County magic.

- Speaking of 2B Jason Kipnis, he did it again as he went 2-for-3 with a HR, RBI, and walk. It is his somewhere around his 6th-8th home run in the spring games, and he has just been locked in all spring. It will be interesting to see his final numbers when they are posted.

- RHP Zach Putnam is probably glad to get out of Goodyear after the way it ended for him as in 4 innings he was touched up for 6 runs on 8 hits, 3 walks, and had 2 strikeouts. It looks like his command just wasn't there on Saturday afternoon, and his velocity has been noticeably down 2-3 MPH his last few outings. I would have to believe some of this is a dead arm phase as he has had a longer spring than he is probably used to as he reported back in mid-February to big league camp so has been throwing for twice as long as most of the pitchers in camp. Hopefully the rest between now and his first regular season start gives him the shot in the arm he needs.

- LHP Nick Hagadone and LHP Kelvin De La Cruz combined to throw 8.2 innings without giving up an earned run, 1 hit, 6 walks, and had 10 strikeouts.

- RHP Joe Gardner finished his first spring training strong going 5 innings and allowing 1 unearned run on 4 hits, 1 walk, and had 5 strikeouts. He threw just 69 pitches and first pitch strikes to 16 of 19 batters.

Indians Remove Toregas, Hernandez From Roster

The Indians today announced that they have purchased the contracts of infielder Mark Grudzielanek and outfielder Austin Kearns from Triple-A Columbus and placed both infielder Russell Branyan (lower back rehab) and right-handed closer Kerry Wood (strained right lat) on the 15-day Major League disabled list retroactive to March 26th.

During spring training Kearns batted .300 (15-50) with 15 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2 home runs and 9 RBI in 21 games while Grudzielanek hit .303 (10-33) with 6 runs scored, 5 doubles and 7RBI in 12 games.  Branyan did not play in an official spring contest though began playing in minor league spring games on March 31st. Wood made two Cactus League appearances going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA (2.0IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 2K) before sustaining his injury.

In addition, the Indians designated infielder Anderson Hernandez and catcher Wyatt Toregas for assignment to allow room for Kearns and Grudzielanek on the 40-man roster.  The Indians' 25-man roster is at 25 and the 40-man roster stands at 40.

Opening Day Minor League Rosters

Here are the season opening rosters for Columbus, Akron, Kinston and Lake County as well as those who will be in extended spring training. Please note, these rosters are subject to change at anytime before the start of the season on Thursday April 8th as some last minute changes could be made or injuries could occur. Players under each heading are listed in no particular order.

Also, the roster limit for each affiliate is as follows: Columbus (24), Akron (24), Kinston (25) and Lake County (25). You will notice some affiliates have more players than allowed, and this is because some of these players will open the season on the disabled list while the Indians are still making decisions on some other players. This is especially true at Columbus where the infielders need to be whittled down by a player or two.

Last, some rotations have six starters because two of the pitchers in the rotation are expected to piggyback each other every outing with one starting and going five innings and then the other coming in relief and going four innings, and then that person starting the next time and the other coming in relief, etc.

Spring Game Recap: 4/2

Here are the box scores from the minor league games on Friday, as well as some quick observations:

- Russell Branyan was back in the Columbus lineup but only played DH going 1-for-3 with a 2B and 2 walks.

- RHP Carlos Carrasco went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, 1 walk, and had 2 strikeouts. The more interesting news is he only went 70 pitches and had to come out of the game early because of a right lat issue, but he is fine and is expected to make his next start.

- Akron pounded the ball around the year for 11 runs on 13 hits, and were paced by OF John Drennen (3-for-4, 3B, 2 RBI), 3B Lonnie Chisenhall (2-for-4, HR, 3 RBI), and Nick Weglarz (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI).

- RHP Jeanmar Gomez went 5 strong innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits, 2 walks, and had 4 strikeouts.

- RHP Alex White went 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, 1 walks and had 3 strikeouts. He threw 69 pitches and first pitch strikes to 10 or 20 batters.

- RHP Trey Haley struggled with his command going 5 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks, and had 1 strikeout. He threw 67 pitches and only 8 first pitch strikes to 18 batters.

- SS Kevin Fontanez had a very good showing in the Mahoning Valley game going 2-for-3 with a 2B, RBI and 2 walks.

- RHP Takafumi Nakamura (pictured) struggled in his 2 inning outing allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk and had 1 strikeout.

Akron’s 2009 Championship Run Special To Sarbaugh

The 2009 Akron Aeros won the Eastern League Championship, their third title in franchise history and third in the last seven years. For Aeros fans who ventured to the ballpark on a nightly basis last year they saw exciting baseball night in and night out with about as talented a roster as you will find in Double-A. In addition to the talent, the players were also hard workers and really meshed well as a team.

For former Akron manager Mike Sarbaugh, it was a fun ride and a joy to be part of such a special team last year. Be it the minor leagues or the major leagues, championships are rare, and Sarbaugh made it a point to tell his players to cherish what they had accomplished as a team and how hard it is to come out at the end on top.

"As I told the guys after we won it, I got them together [in the locker room] and I told them they should sit back and appreciate what kind of year we had because they don't come along that often,” said Sarbaugh, who is now the manager for the Indians Triple-A affiliate in Columbus. “I think it was one of the best teams I have been around that seemed to get along all year long. That's hard to do with guy's coming in and out, moving up and moving down. It just seemed like the guys coming in from Kinston or wherever seemed to fit right in and we really didn't miss a beat.”

The biggest cog to the Akron machine last year was catcher Carlos Santana who was named the Eastern League MVP. He was the third Akron player to win MVP honors, joining Jordan Brown (2007) and Victor Martinez (2002). He dominated the league in almost every category as he finished 11th in the league in batting average (.290), 3rd in runs (91), 2nd in HR (23), 2nd in RBI (97), 1st in walks (90, 15 more than 2nd place player), 4th in total bases (227), 2nd in on-base percentage (.413), 1st in slugging percentage (.530), and 1st in OPS (.943).

While Santana’s offense paced the team, it was his improved defense and handling of the pitching staff which Sarbaugh feels may have had just as much of a positive impact on the team.

"You can’t say enough about what Carlos did,” said Sarbaugh. “We all knew going in that he was going to be pretty special offensively, but the big thing that we were trying to get across was his [development] behind the plate. I give Carlos credit as he really worked hard and I think from the beginning of the year to the end of the year he made tremendous strides. It is a credit to the work he put in and it just shows the ability he has to pick up things and get better. He is a special player and is very similar offensively to what Victor Martinez was when he was in Akron and I was there as a hitting coach. That says a lot there, especially with what Victor has done in the game. A switch-hitting catcher with the ability he has does not come around often."

Right-handed pitcher Hector Rondon and left-handed pitcher Chuck Lofgren looked like they were in for big years after great starts to their season at Akron last year, but both were promoted to Columbus by midseason. With their loss in the rotation, right-handers Jeanmar Gomez and Josh Tomlin stepped up and ended up being the workhorses in the rotation all year.

Gomez started the season at High-A Kinston, but was in Akron by early May. He ended up making 22 starts for Akron and went 10-4 with a 3.43 ERA, and in the process was named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. He finished 6th in the league in wins (10), 3rd in ERA (3.43), and 3rd in WHIP (1.27), but his most memorable start of the year came on May 21st when he threw a perfect game.

"The one thing I think helped was when Jeanmar came [to Akron] he had already played with a lot of the guys so I think that helped him with the transition,” said Sarbaugh. “But you could just see the confidence build with each start. The two starts which really stand out are of course the perfect game, but the start before that I think he threw eight shutout innings against Altoona. He just continued to get better and it seemed like when the situation got tough he really battled. You could really tell he grew especially with his confidence, and he was a big part of the 2009 team that's for sure."

Tomlin was another key piece as he battled and gave Akron a chance to win every time out. He made 26 starts and went 14-9 with a 4.16 ERA, and finished the year ranked 11th in the Eastern League in ERA (4.16), 1st in wins (14), 2nd in strikeouts (125) and 2nd in WHIP (1.21). He also became just the third pitcher in Akron history with 14 or more wins in a season, joining Paul Byrd (14 wins in 1992) and single-season leader Adam Miller (15 wins in 2006). He was at his best in his two starts in the Eastern League Playoffs as he went 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA going 14.0 innings and allowing just eight hits, no walks, and racking up 15 strikeouts.

"Josh takes the ball every fifth day and he knows how to pitch,” said Sarbaugh. “He has good stuff and great command. You know what you are going to get from Josh as he is very reliable, controls a running game, and does everything we ask of him. He was huge for us. You talk about how to win a championship you have to have a lot of things come together, and he had two big playoff starts for us. He was outstanding."

While the starting rotation was in flux most of the year, the bullpen may have been the most stable and consistent component of the team all year. Six relievers finished the year with an ERA under 3.25, and every time they came into a game in the 6th or 7th inning they almost always locked down the opponent, especially in the second half of the season.

"I think with the type of bullpen we had those guys were strike-throwers,” said Sarbaugh. “Steven Wright was 10-0, and you don't see that very often from a bullpen guy. What Josh Judy did in the second half in the closer's role [was impressive]. Carlton Smith, Zach Putnam, Erik Stiller, Neil Wagner, Vinnie Pestano, you just couldn't ask for a better group as a bullpen that went out and attacked hitters and got ahead. They were outstanding. When I talked to [Pitching Coach] Ruben [Niebla] when we looked back on it, I think our bullpen ERA might have been under a two the second half of the season, which is unbelievable."

While Santana was the main source of firepower in the lineup, outfielder Jose Constanza was the igniter to the offense. He showed a much improved approach at the plate by drawing more walks and became a greater nuisance on the basepaths. He finished the season ranked 1st in the league in runs (98), 10th in hits (137), 3rd in triples (7), 2nd in walks (75), 1st in stolen bases (49), and 8th in on-base percentage (.378). His 49 stolen bases set an Akron franchise record (42, Eider Torres in 2006), and his 98 runs scored is 2nd all time in franchise history (Omar Ramirez 116 runs in 1993).

“When you look at the lineup with Jose at the top and the pressure he puts on the defense, it was a good combination,” said Sarbaugh. “For any good club the leadoff spot is huge. It is just kind of what sets what is going to happen in a game. Just the pressure he put on them where when he would get on base and now all of a sudden they are worried about him stealing a base and not worrying about a hitter much. He was just huge for us."

Outfielder John Drennen seemed to ignite the flames to what looked like a fading baseball career as after a slow start to his season he became an important part of the team and key player for Akron in the playoffs. After hitting just .191 with 1 HR, 10 RBI and a .601 OPS in 21 games he was actually sent down to Kinston for about three weeks in late May, but when he returned in June he was a different looking player and had a strong finish to his season where he hit .296 with 7 HR, 30 RBI and a .819 OPS in 72 games. He was simply electric in September where in 13 combined games in the regular season and playoffs he hit .377 with 6 HR and a 1.174 OPS.

"John started the year with us and got off to an okay start and struggled in May a little bit,” said Sarbaugh. “I think when he went back to Kinston and having to go down it opened his eyes a little bit, and I think when he came back it seemed like he had a different attitude and didn't put as much pressure on himself and just went out and played. I think whenever you are close to the playoffs or in them, you can't rely on your 3-4-5 guys as you gotta have guys at the top and bottom who contribute, and that is what John did. That's what it takes to win a league like we did as it takes the whole team. John was a big part of that as he really got hot toward the end of the season and carried it into the playoffs."

Coming off an MVP season at Kinston in 2008, first baseman Beau Mills had a solid but unspectacular year where in 135 games he hit .267 with 14 HR, 83 RBI and a .724 OPS. It was an off year for him as far as expectations go, but Sarbaugh felt he still had a good year.

"I think Beau had a pretty solid year,” said Sarbaugh. “I know he probably would have liked to have a better year, but when you look at his numbers I think he had a good year. It is just part of their development, and sometimes you have to get through some adversity and I think he dealt with it very well."

On the defensive side of things, shortstop Carlos Rivero was the leader. He once again struggled with his numbers in the early going as he hit just .220 with 1 HR, 25 RBI and a .569 OPS in the first half of the season, but he finished strong where after the All Star break he hit .280 with 6 HR, 33 RBI and a .797 OPS. But it was his defense at the most important position on the field which provided to have the biggest impact to the team.

"I think Rivero is a very reliable shortstop as he has great hands, is very accurate with his throws, and is just a really solid shortstop,” said Sarbaugh. “He got off to a little bit of a tough start in the first half, but that is part of his development. He hasn't repeated a level and I think that is part of why in the past he has gotten off to slow starts. It is part of learning, getting comfortable, and making adjustments. He is a good looking player."

There were lots of other players who contributed to varying degrees to Akron’s successful 2009 title run. Be it utility infielder Cristo Arnal who filled in for second baseman Josh Rodriguez who was injured early in the season and missed over a 100 games, utility player Jerad Head’s exceptional versatility and consistency, outfielder Matt McBride’s production at the plate, and so many more.

It was just a team that gelled and fit together well both on the diamond and in the clubhouse, which is often a recipe for success.

“It was a special team,” said Sarbaugh, “and I know when I look back that it will be a very special year for myself and those guys."

Spring Game Recap: 4/1

Here are the box scores from the action on Thursday, a day that turned into quite the eventful day in minor league camp with cuts and rosters being announced. I don't have rosters yet, and when I do get them I don't think I will be able to officially post them for a few days. But here is what I know offhand (reminder these are are unofficial):

- TJ House and Kelvin De La Cruz in Kinston rotation.

- Trey Haley, Clayton Cook, Marty Popham and Joe Gardner will be in the Lake County rotation and apparently Austin Adams will also be starting.

- Lake County infield will be Kyle Smith, Argenis Martinez, Jeremie Tice, Adam Abraham, Casey Frawley, and Ben Carlson.

- Erik Stiller, Ryan Edell and Neil Wagner all are returning to the Akron bullpen.

- Josh Tomlin, Carlton Smith, Jess Todd, Frank Herrmann, Steven Wright, and Mike Gosling will be in Columbus bullpen.

- Josh Rodriguez will start in Akron.

- Chris Kersten, Vidal Nuno, Mike Rayl, Kevin Fontanez and JD Goryl to extended spring training.

Smoke Signals 4/1: Pluto & Castrovince Join The Show

Opening Day is only four days away....can you believe it? That's no April Fool's joke either.

With that in mind Paul Cousineau and I are back on the cyberwaves tonight to talk all things Indians baseball on our weekly on-line broadcast "Smoke Signals" from 9:30-10:30 PM EST. This week the focus will be entirely on the big league team as we wrap up all the happenings this spring, make sense of all the roster decisions announced yesterday, and preview the upcoming season for the Indians and baseball in general. The show can be heard live or downloaded/listened to later here:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/theclevelandfan/2010/04/02/smoke-signals

A big portion of the show will be taken up with the guest appearance of Plain Dealer Columnist Terry Pluto and Indians.com beat reporter Anthony Castrovince.  Pluto will be on at about 9:40 PM to talk about the Indians, and Castrovince will be on around 10:00 PM to talk about everything he saw out in Goodyear these past five to six weeks and what his thoughts are about the roster decisions, what to expect in 2010, and more. If you want to know what is going on with the big league team, Castro is your guy.  If you want inside knowledge into the ownership and front office, Pluto is your guy.  Feel free to e-mail us at tlastoria@indiansprospectinsider.com with any questions or comments you would like us to address on the show or to ask Anthony or Terry, and feel free to call us at 646-716-8012.

Indians Release 12 Minor Leaguers

As noted earlier today, the Indians made some final roster cuts today in minor league camp. Aside from maybe another player or two being cut over the next few days, it looks like these are the final cuts this spring:

Tom Mastny (RHP)
Mark Thompson (SS)
Dallas Cawiezell (RHP)
Adam White (OF)
Chris Nash (1B)
Matt Brown (OF)
Michael Pontius (RHP)
Matt Willard (INF)
Lurvin Basabe (2B)
Rolando Petit (C/1B)
Guido Fonseca (RHP)
Stephen Head (1B/OF)

Huff Takes The Fifth

In not much of a surprise announcement today, the Indians have optioned out right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A Columbus. In doing so, they also named left-hander David Huff as the final starter in the opening day rotation. The 25-man roster - barring injuries - is now set for opening day this coming Monday.

Barring injury, here is the opening day roster:

ROTATION: RHP Jake Westbrook, RHP Fausto Carmona, RHP Justin Masterson, RHP MitchTalbot, LHP David Huff.
BULLPEN: RHP Chris Perez, LHP Rafael Perez, LHP Aaron Laffey, RHP Jensen Lewis, LHP Tony Sipp, RHP Joe Smith, RHP Jamey Wright.
POSTION: CA Lou Marson, CA Mike Redmond, INF Asdrubal Cabrera, INF Mark Grudzielanek, DH Travis Hafner, INF Andy Marte, INF Jhonny Peralta, INF Luis Valbuena, OF Michael Brantley, OF Shin Soo Choo, OF Austin Kearns, OF/1B Matt LaPorta, OF Grady Sizemore.

In a related note, the Indians' Player Development is currently conducting meetings with minor league players who will be released today. I should have a list of names sometime later in the day. Also, roster assignments will be posted later today letting players know what affiliate they will open the season with. I will try and pass along that information too as I get it, though I may not be able to release this information right away.

Spring Game Recap: 3/31

Here are the box scores from Wednesday's minor league action against the Brewers. As an aside, no decision has been made on who the winner is between David Huff and Carlos Carrasco for the final spot in the big league rotation, but manager Manny Acta is supposed to address the media late Thursday morning with his decision. It is very much expected that Huff will be the guy who wins the spot.

Here are some quick thoughts on the minor league action on Wednesday:

- No cuts were handed down on Wednesday, but I am hearing that some cuts could be handed out on Thursday morning. This could be the final round of cuts, as the moving trucks will be there all day packing up the team and player gear to send to Lake County, Kinston, Akron and Columbus. Player should also hear their roster fate in regard to which team they did or did not make by Thursday evening or Friday morning.

- Columbus racked up 17 hits, led by 3B Jared Goedert who went 4-for-4 with a 3B, HR, and 5 RBI. Goedert has had a very good camp, so it will be interesting to see what he roster fate ultimately turns out to be. LF Stephen Head (3-for-4, RBI) and SS Brian Bixler (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) also had good games.

- RHP Hector Ambriz was put on the big league disabled list, but he is still pitching in minor league camp and struggling. He went 1 inning and allowed 3 runs on 2 hits, 1 walk, and had 1 strikeout.

- 1B Beau Mills went 2-for-4 with a 2B, HR, 2 RBI for Akron, but on the flip side SS Carlos Rivero went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts.

- LHP Scott Barnes (pictured) started for Akron and had a solid outing though his command was obviously shaky in that he threw 80 pitches but only lasting 4.2 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits, 4 walks, and had 2 strikeouts. He threw just 7 first pitch strikes to the 19 batters he faced.

- RHP Omar Aguilar had another tough outing, this time lasting just 2/3s of an inning and allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and had 1 strikeout.

- Did I mention 2B Jason Kipnis has been hot? Well, he continues to sizzle this spring as once again he homered and finished the game 2-for-4 with a 2B, HR, and 3 RBI. I have not compiled the stats to date, but will provide final spring stats early next week, and I am guessing he far and away has had the best statistical camp. I believe that is now his 5th or 6th home run in 11 games.

- The other guy who has had a very good camp is 1B Chris Kersten, who went 2-for-4 with 2 2Bs andf 2 RBI on Wednesday. He continues to pound out the extra base hits, and while he will be old for the Midwest League playing for Lake County this year I am excited to get to know and follow him this year as a diamond in the rough kind of guy.

- RHP Danny Salazar had a nice outing going 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 1 walk and had 2 strikeouts. He is looking to lock down a rotation spot at Kinston or Lake County.
