Kinston takes down Lynchburg

Drew Pomeranz dazzled and Kinston had just enough pop to take down Lynchburg 3-1 Wednesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Kinston (9-4, 47-35) stays in first place on top of the Carolina League Southern Division, with the league’s best record.

Cleveland's 2010 first round draft pick Pomeranz gave up singles to three of the first five batters he faced in the game, then cruised from there. Pomeranz dominated, retiring the next ten batters he faced. Pomeranz would only allow only two more base runners, both on walks in the fifth and seventh innings. He (3-2) matched a season high by going seven innings, giving up three hits while striking out seven. His Carolina League leading ERA dropped to 1.87.

Lynchburg starter Aaron Shafer ran into trouble in the second inning. Adam Abraham started the inning for Kinston with a walk. After a strike out, Doug Pickens singled. On the hit, Abraham hustled to third base and Pickens went to second on the throw. After an intentional walk to Roberto Perez loaded the bases, new K-Triber Argenis Martinez walked to drive home Abraham. In the fourth inning, Kinston started the bottom of the inning with a triple from Abner Abreu. Pickens would then come up big again with an RBI single, giving the Indians a 2-0 lead. The K-Tribe would secure the victory with a solo home run from Abreu in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the fifth home run of the season for Abreu.

Preston Guilmet would pitch a perfect ninth inning for his 21st save in 22 tries this season. He struck out two.

The K-Tribe continues the homestand with a Thirsty Thursday, starting at 6:30 pm in Kinston. Brett Brach (5-5, 2.80) gets the start for Kinston.

Louisville spoils night for Germano, Clippers

Justin Germano took a perfect game into the sixth in a solid spot-start but it wasn't enough as the Clippers dropped another one to Louisville, 3-2.

The Clippers entered the ninth inning up 2-0, but the Bats loaded the bases with nobody out. Jeremy Hermida's 2-RBI double tied the game and Todd Frazier's sacrifice fly brought home Devin Mesoraco to win the game.

Germano went six innings, striking out seven in a spot-start after starter Zach McAllister was called-up by the Cleveland Indians to start Thursday. Germano lost the perfect game after a Todd Frazier bunt single. Carlton Smith pitched one inning of relief before Putnam came in to pitch the eighth and ninth.

Tim Fedroff brought home the Clippers first run of the game with an RBI single in the fifth to score Jerad Head. A Luis Valbuena sac-fly in the sixth resulted in the only other Clippers run.

After taking consecutive games against the Bats in Columbus, the Clippers dropped three-in-a row to their IL West rival. They still lead Louisville by 9.5 games.

The Clippers come back to Huntington Park Thursday for a two-game set against the Toledo Mud Hens. Right-handers Corey Kluber and Thad Weber will be the starting pitchers at 7:05pm.

Aeros Shut Down By Curve, 4-1

The Akron Aeros mustered just three hits and one run as they lost game three of a four-game series against the Altoona Curve 4-1 Wednesday at Blair County Ballpark.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Gardner suffered the loss for the Aeros pitching six innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and striking out six while walking two.

Right-hander Philip Irwin recorded the win for Altoona tossing 6.2 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out three while walking none. Righty Michael Dubee pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief to earn the save.

The Curve (37-47) got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Brock Holt hit a ground-rule double and Josh Rodriguez worked a walk. Andrew Lambo followed with an RBI single scoring Holt and giving the Curve a 1-0 lead.

Altoona scored again in the bottom of the third inning. Greg Picart was hit by a pitch to open the frame. With one out, he swiped second and scored on a Holt RBI single to make it 2-0. Rodriguez moved Holt to third on a single. Lambo followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Holt and giving the Curve a 3-0 lead.

The Curve added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Travis Scott RBI triple to make it 4-0.

The Aeros (43-43) scored a run in the top of the eighth inning on a Tyler Cannon RBI double, but drew no closer as the Curve went on to the win.

The Aeros will look for the series win over Altoona Thursday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Matt Packer, who is 2-8 with a 5.98 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Michael Colla, who is 4-4 with a 3.24 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7 p.m.

Scrappers Fall to Crosscutters

Williamsport scored three runs over the final two innings to beat the Scrappers, 5-2, at Eastwood Field.

The game was tied at 2-2 until the top of the eighth inning when the Crosscutters scored a run on a double down the left field line. The ball just stayed fair, giving Williamsport the lead.
One inning later, the Crosscutters added two more runs.

Mahoning Valley scored first on a long home run by Jake Lowery in the bottom of the first inning. Williamsport scored in the top of the second on another home run, this one by Patrick Murray.
