Game Recaps 5/14

Note: Since I am doing some work for STO with the Gameday presentation for Thursday afternoon's Indians' game, Minor Happenings will not post until first thing Friday morning.

Déjà vu All Over Again
Aeros and Curve Postponed Wednesday

ALTOONA, PA – The Aeros keep getting dressed up, but they’ve got nowhere to go.

A night after unplayable field conditions forced the postponement of game one of this three-game series, the playing surface at Blair County Ballpark still wasn’t firm enough to play on leading to the postponement on today’s scheduled doubleheader. The teams will try it again Thursday morning, with a doubleheader (two seven-inning games) set for 10:35 a.m.

Akron has now gone four straight days without a game, with Sunday’s game against Trenton rained out in Akron, a scheduled off-day Monday, and the two rainouts here. Starting pitchers for the twin-bill tomorrow have yet to be announced, but the game broadcast will begin at 10:20 a.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.

Wilmington Comeback Beats Kinston

Wilmington scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning coming back to beat Kinston 4-3 Wednesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Kinston had a 3-2 lead going into the ninth inning when Jeff Bianchi hit a one-out single. Josh Johnson followed with another single one batter later. Wilmington tied the game on an Anthony Seratelli single scoring Bianchi. With the infield pulled in, Kinston was able to keep the game tied on a Jarrod Dyson grounder to short, which Kinston’s Carlos Rivero fired home to cut down Johnson. Seratelli advanced to third base on the play and scored on a wild pitch by Kinston closer Luis Perdomo. It was the first earned runs Perdomo had given up this season.

Kinston broke out the bats early with a third inning home run by Alex Castillo. Beau Mills helped Kinston extend the lead with RBI hits in the third and fourth innings. Mills went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Johnny Drennen went 4-for-5 with two runs scored on the night for Kinston. Perdomo (1-1) picked up the loss for Kinston, Greg Holland (3-2) notched the win for Wilmington. Holland pitched four plus innings of scoreless relief from the bullpen.

The K-Tribe tries to salvage a series split in game four of the series Thursday night at Grainger Stadium. Thirsty Thursday start time is 7pm, Carlton Smith will take the hill for Kinston.

CAPTAINS SHUTOUT POWER 5-0

(Charleston, WV) – Kelvin De la Cruz tossed six scoreless innings as the Captains defeated the West Virginia Power 5-0. The Captains are 6-1 on the road trip and 16-6 on the road this season. They remain in first place three games ahead of Greensboro. This was the Captains sixth shut out this season.

The Captains got on the board first off Power starter Dan Merklinger when Adam White tripled. White would core on Lucas Montero’s single and the Captains led 1-0. The Captains tacked on two more runs in the fifth off reliever Reed Dickert when with two out and two on, Dustin Realini singled to center field scoring Adam White from second base. Karexon Sanchez who was going from first to third on the hit, scored when the center fielder Caleb Gindl’s throw sailed into the third base dugout and the Captains led 3-0. The Captains added an insurance run in the eighth off of Power reliever Wes Etheridge on a Michael Valadez sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Mark Thompson hit a solo homer in the ninth inning to cap off the scoring at 5-0.

The Captains wrap up the series and the road trip on Thursday as LHP Ryan Morris (5-0, 2.45) heads to the mound against the Power’s RHP Evan Anundsen (3-3, 3.96). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Jake Westbrook and reliever Joe Borowski are expected to pitch for the Lake County Captains during the upcoming home stand. Westbrook is scheduled to make a start for the Captains on Saturday May 17th at Classic Park against the Lexington Legends. Game time is 7:05 PM and the game will feature a post game fireworks extravaganza. This is the second start for Westbrook at Classic Park. He made a rehab appearance last year as well.

I know you are a big booster of Nick Weglarz getting to Akron quickly but I have some reservations about his being a complete ballplayer. At the plate, I completely agree with you. However, John Drennen has gone completely unnoticed and he really seems to be buying into the batting approach the Tribe has been trying to instill. He is hitting singles and doubles to all fields and has showed good discipline at the plate. He is even hitting LHers. He is a more complete ballplayer than Weglarz at this time, IMHO. If he keeps this up, I think he should move first. What are your thoughts?

Yeah, I am a huge fan of Weglarz, but that doesn't mean I am pushing for him to get a quick callup to Kinston. I actually think he should spend most if not all the year in Kinston. If any outfielder is going to be called up, Drennen will be the first guy.

Drennen is a more rounded player with defense, speed, and all that (although Wegz the bigger impact bat) and I think Drens has done his time in Kinston and is ready for a callup. Just need an opening at Akron....and when one opens up he'll be there.
