Game Recaps 5/3

As predicted, Akron made a roster move activating OF Stephen Head from the disabled list. Head takes the roster spot of IF Michael Aubrey, who was promoted to Class AA Buffalo on Friday. Head opened the season in extended spring training while recovering from surgery on his right (non-throwing) labrum, and joined the Aeros April 10th. He appeared in five games and hit .357 (5-14) with three RBI and four runs scored before breaking a bone in his right wrist and going on the DL April 17th.

Gimenez Drives in Pair, But Aeros Fall 6-2

BOWIE, MD – Chris Gimenez homered and drove in both Akron runs but an early six-run deficit was too much to overcome as Bowie triumphed 6-2 before 7,881 fans at Prince George’s Stadium Saturday night. The Baysox improved to 16-13 while the Aeros slipped to 12-16.

Bowie never trailed in the contest, striking for a run in the bottom of the first on a leadoff triple by Freddie Bynum and a sacrifice fly from Lou Montanez. Nolan Reimold led off the second with a solo home run to right-center, and the Baysox then tacked on two more runs in the third. Bynum and Carlos Rojas reached to start the inning, and Montanez then drove a double into the right field corner. Bynum scored easily while Rojas held at third, but Ryan Goleski’s throw rolled away from Brandon Chaves as Rojas scooted home as well. The Sox pushed the advantage to 6-0 in the fourth on Bynum’s two-run double.

Akron got on the board in the fifth as Wes Hodges led off with a double, went to third on a groundout and scored on Gimenez’s sacrifice fly. Gimenez then cut the deficit to 6-2 with a solo homer to left-center in the seventh, his third bomb of the year. The Aeros made thing interesting in the top of the ninth as Matt Whitney led off with a single and Hodges was grazed by a pitch, meaning the potential tying run was on deck. The Baysox summoned Kam Mickolio out of the bullpen however, and he induced a 6-4-3 double play from Stephen Head to douse the fire.

Jason Berken (2-2) got the win for Bowie, holding the Aeros to a run on five hits over six innings. Frank Herrmann (3-2) struggled with his command all night in the defeat, giving up all six runs (four earned) and seven hits in five innings. Mickolio notched his first save of the year. Hodges and Josh Rodriguez both had two hits apiece for the offense.

The series concludes Sunday at 2:05 p.m., as Akron sends left-hander Ryan Edell (1-1, 3.45 ERA) to the hill against Bowie’s Chris Tillman (2-0, 2.91 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 1:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.

Kinston Takes Game, Series From Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA – Jerad Head delivered a tie-breaking, two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to vault Kinston to a 6-3 win on Saturday night. With the win Kinston takes two of three from the Hillcats, winning their second series in a row. The K-Tribe has now won three of their last four series.

Kinston went up 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run home run by Nick Weglarz. It was the third home run of the season for Weglarz; all of them against Lynchburg. The Hillcats would storm back with a solo home run by Steve Lerud in the fourth inning, then two more solo shots by Jamie Romak and Kent Sakamoto in the sixth. With the score tied at three in the eighth inning, Adam Davis led off with an infield single. Head followed with a towering home run to left field. It was Head’s third home run of the season. Weglarz scored later in the inning with an RBI single by Carlos Rivero.

Hector Rondon had a great start for Kinston, giving up just one earned run in five innings. Heath Taylor (2-2) picked up the win for Kinston, giving up one hit in two innings. Luis Perdomo notched his fifth save of the season, giving up one hit in the ninth inning. Perdomo has not given up an earned run in 17 innings of work this season.

The K-Tribe will spend a rare off day on the road on Sunday. Kinston will be in Frederick, Maryland getting set for a three game set against the Keys starting Monday night at 7pm. Carlton Smith will take the mound for Kinston on Monday.

CAPTAINS GAME POSTONED AGAIN ON SATURDAY

(Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County Captains game against the Kannapolis Intimidators scheduled for Saturday has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Tuesday. There is also a double header scheduled for Sunday. The two double headers will consist of two seven inning games. Fans with tickets for Saturday’s game can exchange them for any other regular season game based on availability. Tickets must be exchanged in person at the Ticket Office or the National City Ticket Information Center prior to entering the gates for another game. The Captains host the Kannapolis Intimidators on Sunday with a double header that is scheduled for 1:05 PM. The Captains send LHP Kelvin De La Cruz to the mound (1-1, 2.25) in game one against the Intimidators Charlie Shirek (1-2, 1.61). In Game two, LHP Ryan Morris gets the nod (4-0, 1.67) against the Intimidators RHP Johnnie Lowe (1-3, 5.01).
