Game Recaps 5/16

Congrats to first baseman Michael Aubrey on his callup to Cleveland tonight. Aubrey will be in uniform with the Indians today (Saturday) and is making his big league debut. As noted in my Minor Happenings piece yesterday, I was told late last week he was on the verge of a callup and that it could happen anyday. Indians officials had seem him in action at Buffalo and were fired up with what they saw. Great news, and hopefully Aubrey can make the most of the opportunity as I think his bat could be a nice addition to a lineup filled with too many strikeout prone guys.

In other news, outfielder Trevor Crowe is back at Akron and has been activated. Infielder Chris De La Cruz was re-assigned to Kinston to make room for Crowe. No word on who will be moved off the Kinston roster for De La Cruz, but it most certainly will be infielder Cristo Arnal.

Also, lefty Dan Cevette was activated in Kinston. No official word at the moment who was put on the disabled list or re-assigned, but word is Paolo Espino has been sent to extended spring training.

Aeros and Phillies Rained Out Friday

READING, PA – Now is the road trip of Akron’s discontent.

The Aeros sat through consecutive postponements in Altoona before finally sneaking in a doubleheader Thursday, but it was more of the same Friday night in Reading as the opener of this three-game series was rained out. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, June 21st beginning at 5:35 p.m.

This shortened three-game series continues tomorrow night as Aeros left-hander Chuck Lofgren (1-3, 5.51 ERA), who hasn’t pitched in 10 days, will try again to make his eighth start of the season. The R-Phils will counter with right-hander Andrew Carpenter (2-4, 5.12 ERA) Saturday. The game broadcast begins at 5:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.

K-Tribe Beats Winston-Salem 6-1

Kinston starter Jeanmar Gomez pitched seven strong innings as Kinston beat Winston-Salem 6-1 Friday night at Ernie Shore Field. Gomez (2-5) picked up the win, giving up just four hits and one earned run in seven innings of work. Dan Cevette and Luis Perdomo combined for two hitless innings from Kinston’s bullpen.

The K-Tribe started the scoring in the top of the third inning with a solo home run by Niuman Romero. It was Romero’s first homer of the season and just the tenth of his six year Minor League career. Beau Mills hit a two-run home run for Kinston in the top of the sixth to make the score 3-0. It was Mills fourth home run of the season. Romero was at it again in the ninth inning with an RBI single. Cirilo Cumberbatch drove in two more in the ninth with an RBI single of his own for the 6-1 lead and eventual win. Mills, Drennen and Romero all went 2-for-4 for the K-Tribe. Kinston managed nine hits as a team on the night.

The K-Tribe takes on Winston-Salem Saturday at Ernie Shore Field with a double header starting at 5pm. Josh Tomlin is schedule to pitch for Kinston in game one, Jim Deters the probable pitcher for game two.

CAPTAINS BEAT LEGENDS 5-2

(Eastlake, OH) – The Lake County Captains scored three runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Lexington Legends Friday night at Classic Park. The Captains bullpen was outstanding again pitching four scoreless innings. The Captains lead in the Northern Division of the SAL is now three games over Greensboro.

The Captains got rolling in the first inning against Legends starter Carlos Ladeuth with Karexon Sanchez singling with one out. He moved to third on Roman Pena’s double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Brown. Pena scored from second on Chris Nash’s single to make it 2-0. The Legends tied it up in the third. With two out, Collin Delome doubled. He scored on Max Sapp’s double. Sapp scored on a single by Eric Taylor and tied the game at 2-2.

The game was tied until the bottom of the eighth when the Captains scored three runs. Pena hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to give the Captains the lead. A wild pitch by reliever Mike Koons scored Adam White and Nash singled home Sanchez to top off the three run inning to make it 5-2.

Ryan Morris did not factor in the decision going five innings and allowing two runs on four hits, he walked four and struck out six. Josh Judy relieved Morris and pitched two scoreless innings. Kyle Landis (1-1) came on in the eighth inning and pitched a scoreless inning to pick up his first win. Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his eleventh save. Ladeuth would strike out a season high nine batters but would not get a decision. Mike Koons took the loss in relief to drop to 0-3.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 7:05 PM as RHP Chris Archer (1-5, 4.71) heads to the mound against the Legend’s LHP Anthony Bello (1-2, 3.82). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
