Phillies Blow Out Aeros 14-1

READING, PA – The Aeros sat around for more than two hours to wrap up their series with the Reading Phillies Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium, and in the end the wait really wasn’t worth it.

Reading scored five runs in both the second and third innings and never looked back, scoring a 14-1 decision over Akron before 4,513 fans. The Phillies improved to 19-22 with the win while the Aeros fell to 18-21. Reading’s 14 runs matched a season-high for an Aeros opponent, and the 20 hits given up by Akron pitching set a new season-high.

The Phillies struck for a run in the bottom of the first on Lou Marson’s RBI single, but things really got out of hand an inning later. Luke Appert led off with a solo home run to left-center, and Greg Golson made it 4-0 with a two-run single up the middle. Reading then tacked on two more runs on RBI hits from Marson and Joey Hammond to make it 6-0 after two, and the tough times continued for the Aeros in the third. Jason Donald singled home a run to push the lead to 7-0, and Marson then put an exclamation point on things with a grand slam to make it 11-0.

Akron got on the board with a sacrifice fly from Wes Hodges in the fourth, his team-leading 34th RBI of the year in his 39th game, but couldn’t muster anything else. Golson capped the scoring with a three-run bomb off Erik Stiller in the eighth.

Antonio Bastardo (2-1) got the win with six innings of one-run baseball for Reading, while Akron starter Frank Herrmann (4-3) suffered through just 2.1 innings, allowing nine runs and a dozen hits. Brandon Pinckney extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-4 effort, and Jose Constanza collected a pair of hits as well.

The Aeros head back to open an eight-game homestand Monday evening against Altoona at Canal Park. Left-hander Ryan Edell (1-3, 5.59 ERA) will get the start for Akron on Dollar Dog night, with all hot dogs just $1 all night long. K-Tribe Game Suspended

Mother nature ruined a great outing for Steven Wright, as Kinston lead 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when weather suspended the game. Wright threw four no-hit innings, striking out six with no walks. He allowed just one base runner when he hit a batter in the bottom of the third inning. It is the fourth time in his two year career with Kinston that he has had a start stopped because of rain or power outage. In each suspended start he had not given up an earned run. Last season, Wright had another no hitter delayed by rain. Wright had not given up a hit through three innings when rain stopped that outing.

Wright got run support early when Kinston’s Adam Davis led off the game with a home run. It was the second home run of the season from Davis. No word on when this suspended game will be picked up.

The K-Tribe is off on Monday, before heading to Myrtle Beach on Tuesday for a three game series with the first place Pelicans. Game time 7:05 pm Tuesday night in Myrtle Beach.

CAPTAINS WIN 6-1, MILLER IS 7-0

(Eastlake, OH) – Ryan Miller picked up his league leading seventh win and Adam White hit his third home run as the Lake County Captains defeated the Lexington Legends 6-1 on Sunday at Classic Park. The Captains record improved to 27-12 while the Legends dropped to a league last 13-29.

The Legends broke out on top in the second inning off of Captains starter Jake Westbrook when with one out Eric Taylor doubled and scored on a base hit by Steve Brown to make it 1-0. The Captains took the lead in the third inning off Legends starter Leandro Cespedes when Adam White hit his second home run of the year, a two run blast to make it 2-1. The Captains added a run in the seventh inning when Doug Pickens drove in a run on a ground out to the pitcher and the lead was 3-1. The Captains tacked on three unearned runs in the eighth inning to finish off the scoring at 6-1.

Westbrook who was making a rehab start, did not factor in the decision going 3.2 innings and giving up a run before his stint was done due to a forty five minute rain delay. Miller went 5.1 scoreless innings allowing four hits, walking one and striking out a season high eight batters. Cespedes took the loss to go 2-3.

The series wraps up on Monday at 7:05 PM as Indians reliever Joe Borowski will be on the mound in a rehab start against the Legend’s LHP Jeff Icenogle (0-2, 2.25). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
