History: Moncrief was a 14th round pick in the 2008 Draft out of Chipola Junior College (FL).

Strengths & Opportunities: With Moncrief it is all about power as he routinely hits 96 MPH with his fastball and has the arm strength where he is expected to add even more velocity to his fastball down the road. He also throws a slider and changeup, with the slider a more advanced pitch with the potential to be a second plus pitch for him and a dominating strikeout pitch at the major league level. He also has a good feel for his changeup.

Moncrief is very raw on the mound and lacks experience as a pitcher since he did not pitch much in high school. Even still, he has potential impact ability at the backend of the bullpen. He will be a project for the Indians the next few years as they work on fine-tuning his delivery and mechanics to make him more consistent with his command, get him in pitching shape, and improve his secondary offerings. If the pitching route does not work for him, there is always the possibility he could be moved back to a full-time outfielder where he first gained national attention from scouts with his impact power potential to go along with his average speed and excellent throwing arm.

Outlook: Moncrief could open the year in the Single-A Lake County bullpen, but may also hang around in extended spring training to continue refining his delivery and mechanics in order to improve his command before being moved to Lake County later in the season.

Hi TL,
First real disagreement since I have him higher. I have never seen him pitch but he is a fine RF prospect. If the Indians have him as a pitcher, there must be greater upside, one would think. We never talked about him but I probably would have put him in the top 50. Guess it is a little late to tell you that.

I like Moncrief a lot. Had him initially in my 45-55 range. But, he is extremely raw and is being used as a pitcher. Lacks command and really had trouble in his initial exposure to professional ball in the GCL. I think he has the best chance to be a fast riser in the system, but he needs a TON of work this offseason and through next spring. Great abilities though, and that fastball is sick. Heck of a hitter too. This is just one case where I think projection is very hard to determine....need more data and talk to more people. Only talked to a few so far and saw him once (not in action, he was doing pre-stretch drills before a game and doing flat ground drills).

When you say he hits well, how well? Because the Indians are in need of a pure RF with power and avg.

I thought he had a "fast bat" which usually means power as they get older. He seemed to have decent plate discipline but you have to remember that he was facing HS pitching when I saw him. Boy could he throw. Only average speed would be my guess. Honestly, I would have guessed he might have been in the first 10 rounds as a HS OFer. Not sure why he went the JC route.
