Looking Back at the Draft: 1982

The year is 1982. Cal beats Stanford (and their QB John Elway) on "The Play." The Falklands War rages in South America. U.S. Marines land in Lebanon. Elisha Cuthbert is born and is destined to be better known as Jack Bauer's daughter. Michael Jackson releases his album "Thriller." Former Indians righthander Satchel Page dies, reportedly at the age of 167. Third baseman Toby Harrah puts up an impressive .304/25/78 line to lead the 78-84 Indians, who picked 12th overall in the June draft.

Indians 1st Round Pick: The Indians selected Mark Snyder, RHP from Beardon HS in Knoxville, TN. The 6' 5", 210lb 18-year old never reached the major leagues.

Best 1st Round Pick: The Mets selected Doc Gooden 5th overall, and two years later he was one of the best pitchers in the game.

Honorable Mention: #1 overall pick Shawon Dunston of the Cubs had a pretty good career. His 150 career HR's are the most of any 1st rounder from 1982.

Indians Best Pick: The Indians selected 31 players in June of 1982. Four of those players eventually reached the major leagues. The "best" of those was catcher Bill McGuire. Drafted in the 25th round, McGuire hit .182 for his career, but did manage to hang around for 44 AB's. None of the other position players selected reached double-digits in at-bats at the ML level. I am really beginning to understand the forces that brought about the making of the movie Major League.

Honorable Mention(s): Pass.

The ones that got away: The Braves chose Randy Johnson out of high school in the 4th round, but failed to sign him...Walt Weiss was selected by the Orioles in the 10th round but didn't sign...Cincy took Barry Larkin in the 2nd round but they couldn't come to terms...St. Louis selected but didn't sign future Nasty Boy Rob Dibble (11th round)...K.C. took Will the Thrill Clark in the 4th round and didn't sign him...Raffy Palmerio was chosen by the Mets in the 8th round...Apparently Bo knows holdouts, as on the other side of NY the Yankees failed to sign both Bo Jackson (2nd round) and B.J. Surhoff (5th round)...San Fran took a skinny local kid by the name of Barry Bonds in the 2nd round, but they could not come to terms.

Best early round picks: The Minnesota Twins drafted the face of their franchise in the January phase of the draft, selecting Kirby Puckett with their 1st round pick...St. Louis built their teams around speedster Vince Coleman, who they selected in the 10th round after picking Terry Pendleton in the 7th...Tornto got the battery of Jimmy Key (3rd) and Pat Borders (6th round)...Boston chose solid OF Mike Greenwell in the 3rd round; Indians fans are hoping son Bo ends up being better than his old man.

Late round gems: LHP Kenny Rogers was chosen by the Rangers in the 39th round...Oakland got one of their bash brothers and a 40-40 guys when they selected Jose Canseco in the 15th round...Brett Saberhagen was selected by the Royals in the 19th round as a shortstop.

Other interesting picks: Florida football coach Urban Meyer was selected by Atlanta out of St. John's HS in Ashtabula...Better known to Indians fans as Michael Brantley's dad, Mickey Brantley was an 8th round pick of the Reds...Red Sox fans no doubt recognize the Brewers 1st round pick, Dale Sveum...AAAA all-star Jeff Manto was selected but not signed by the Yankees in the 35th round...Mitch "Wild Thing" Williams was chosen by the Padres in the 8th round...With their 31st round pick, the Giants took a righthander out of UNC Wilmington by the name of Carl Willis
