Game Recaps 4/20

I'm going to try and post these game recaps for the previous nights game. The local newspapers generally only cover the team when they are home, so this should give a quick overview on what happened for the away games as well as the home games.

Captains Drop Finale To Hagerstown 3-2

EASTLAKE, OH – The Captains four game wining streak came to an end on Sunday as the Hagerstown Suns defeated the Captains 3-2. The Suns scored a run in the ninth inning to pick up the victory. The Captains four game winning streak was the longest of the year.

The Suns scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning off of Captains starter Kelvin De La Cruz. With one out, Aaron Suess singled. Tim Pahuta reached on an error putting runners at first and second. Both runners moved up on a ground out. Suess would score on an infield single by Steven Souza with Pahuta taking third base. Pahuta would score on a wild pitch by Captains started Kelvin De La Cruz. The Captains tied it up in the fifth off Suns starter Jeff Mandel. Dustin Realini singled and would go to second two batters later on Mark Thompson’s single. Two batters later Karexon Sanchez singled in both runners to tie the game at 2-2.

De La Cruz would pitch five innings giving up just the two unearned runs on four hits, striking out two and did not factor I the decision. Mike Pontius would relieve De La Cruz and pitch two scoreless innings striking out three. Dallas Cawiezell pitched a scoreless eighth inning but the Suns got to him in the ninth. With one out, Steve Souza doubled. The next batter Trevor Lawhorn singled to score Souza and the Suns led it 3-2. The Captains threatened in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t push a run across. Edulin Abreu picked up the win in relief while Atahualpa Severino recorded the final out of the game an picked up his first save.

The Captains embark on a seven game road trip beginning in Delmarva with a three game series that starts on Monday with game time 7:05 PM. LHP Ryan Morris (2-0, 1.69) gets the start for the Captains against the Shorebirds LHP Zach Britton (1-0, 2.35). After Delmarva, they travel to Kannapolis for a four game series before returning home. The games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

Pelicans Pluck Kinston 7-2

KINSTON, NC - The Pelicans put up six runs in the top of the fifth inning, breaking open a tie game and leading to a 7-2 Sunday afternoon win over Kinston. In the fifth inning Myrtle Beach sent 12 batters to the plate, highlighted by a Tyler Flowers grand slam home run. Flowers had two round trippers in the game, unloading a solo shot in the first inning. K-Tribe pitcher Jeanmar Gomez (0-2) took the loss for the Indians, giving up seven runs on five hits in four and one-third innings. Gomez walked four batters, while striking out two.

Kinston tied the score at one in the bottom of the second when Todd Martin drove home Nick Weglarz with an RBI double. Kinston added their final run of the game when Adam Davis tripled home Brian Juhl.

Deunte Heath (3-0) notched the win for Myrtle Beach. Kinston’s Josh Tomlin, Neil Wagner and Luis Perdomo combined for a scoreless effort from the bullpen.

The K-Tribe stays in Kinston for game five of their eleven game home stand Monday against Salem. The K-Tribe sends Paolo Espino to the mound for the 7pm start.

Aeros and Baysox Suspended in Finale

BOWIE, MD – Sunday’s game between Akron and Bowie was suspended in the top of the third inning and will be resumed Friday, May 2nd at 6:05 p.m. in Bowie.

The Aeros led the Baysox 5-1 with a runner at first and one man out in the top of the third inning when the decision was made to suspend the game. All five Akron runs scored in the top of the second, highlighted by Ryan Goleski’s two-run triple.

The road trip continues for Akron Monday evening in Altoona, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. Left-hander David Huff (0-1, 4.61 ERA) is expected to start for the Aeros while Altoona is slated to send Derek Hankins (0-1, 2.25 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:20 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
