Bats Quiet Again as Aeros Fall 7-1

ALTOONA, PA – The Aeros tied a season-low with only three hits andAltoona’s Brad Corley and Jason Delaney drove in three runs each as theCurve claimed a 7-1 win over Akron before 5,691 fans at Blair CountyBallpark Tuesday night. Altoona evened its record at 9-9 while the Aeroslost their fourth straight game and fell to 6-11.

The Curve never trailed in the game, as James Boone led off the bottom ofthe first with a single to center. Jonel Pacheco followed with a single ofhis own two batters later, and Corley then doubled down the left fieldline to make it 1-0 before Delaney followed with a sacrifice fly tocenter. Altoona manufactured a run in the third, as Melvin Dorta led offwith a single and then stole second base. He alertly moved up 90 feet onPachero’s fly out, and then scored on Corley’s sac fly to center.

After being retired in perfect fashion in the first three frames, theAkron offense awoke briefly in the fourth. Brandon Chaves led off with adouble, and came home two batters later on an RBI double by Michael Aubreyas the Aeros closed to within to 3-1.
It would stay that way for the next few innings as Akron starter FrankHerrmann settled down and turned in a quality start, but Altoona brokethings open in the bottom of the seventh. Reliever Scott Roehl, pitchingfor the first time in six days, walked Victor Alvarez to open the inningand then couldn’t field Boone’s sacrifice attempt as both men were safe.Dorta advanced the runners with a bunt, and the Aeros then intentionallywalked Pacheco to set up both a force at home and a possible double play.

T.J. Burton entered from the bullpen into the bases loaded situation, butan 0-2 fastball got away from him and hit Corley to force in a run andmake it 4-1. Delaney then bounced a seeing-eye single into left field toplate two more runs, and Luis Cruz capped the inning with an RBI single tocenter.

Jimmy Barthmaier (2-0) was outstanding for Altoona, holding the Aeros to arun on two hits in six innings. He allowed one walk against fivestrikeouts, and retired the side in order in every inning except thefourth. Herrmann (2-1) took the loss but recovered from the roughbeginning and allowed three runs and six hits in six innings. He walkedone and struck out three. Chaves, Aubrey, and Josh Rodriguez had the hitsfor Akron.

The Aeros will look to avoid a sweep in the series finale Wednesdaymorning at 10:35 a.m. Akron lefty Ryan Edell (0-0, 3.31 ERA) will take onAltoona’s Yoslan Herrera (1-1, 4.50 ERA). The game broadcast begins at10:20 a.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at http://www.akronaeros.com/.

Salem Slips By Kinston 7-4

Four Kinston errors led to four unearned runs, as the K-Tribe lost to Salem 7-4 Tuesday night at Grainger Stadium. The four errors tied a season high for the K-Tribe. Kinston got off to a great start when Beau Mills hit an RBI single, driving in Adam Davis in the first inning. John Drennen scored on a ground out later in the inning to make the score 2-0.

In the third, Salem pieced together a two-out rally when Tim Torres walked to open the frame. Then, Mark Ori singled to left. On a throw in from left, Kinston missed the mark at first and Torres scored. The next hitter, Jordan Parraz, shot a single to center to tie the game and push his on-base streak to 15 games. In the next inning, Salem struck again as Greg Buchanan’s RBI ground ball scored Cesar Quintero. Then, three batters later, Tim Torres socked a double to right that brought Wladimir Sutil home and the Avalanche moved the lead to 4-2. In the eighth, the Avalanche finished their offense. With two on and two out, Torres punched a double to right center and scored both Quintero and Orlando Rosales. Next, Mark Ori served a single to center and drove Torres home. The final three runs of the game were unearned after two Kinston errors in the inning.

Kinston added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI’s from Mills and Jared Goedert. Steven Wright (0-1), took the loss for Kinston. Chris Salamida got the win for Salem.

Kinston gets set for the rubber match of the three game series starting Wednesday morning at 11 am. The morning match-up will take place as middle school students from around the area invade Grainger Stadium. Hector Rondon will take the mound for Kinston. Game time 11am.

CAPTAINS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER, BACK IN FIRST PLACE

(Salisbury, MD) – The Lake County Captains won both games of their doubleheader against Delmarva on Tuesday 7-1 and 11-1. With the two wins the Captains regain first place as Greensboro lost their game. It was another night of outstanding pitching coupled with timely hitting and poor defense by Delmarva. The Shorebirds committed eleven errors in the doubleheader with seven errors in game one.

In game one, Ryan Morris pitched six shutout innings scattering two hits and striking out four as he picked up his third straight win. Morris has not given up a run in his three previous starts totaling 17.1 innings of work. The Shorebirds committed seven errors which is a new season high against the Captains this year. The Captains scored two unearned runs in the top of the second inning. After two were out, Chris Nash reached on an error by the first baseman Anthony Martinez. Doug Pickens hit a ground ball to the second basemen Ryan Adams who threw it past Martinez and into the Captains dugout. With the runners at second and third, Roman Pena hit a grounder to Adams who threw it into the dugout again and both runners scored. The Captains added two more runs in the third inning when Dustin Realini singed home two runs to make it 4-0. The score was upped to 6-0 in the 5th inning when Karexon Sanchez tripled home Adam White. Sanchez would score when the relay throw to third by Adams went into the dugout. This was Adams’ fifth error of the game. He would commit six in the doubleheader. Chris Nash added an RBI single in the seventh inning to finish the Captains scoring.

Game two saw the Shorebirds strike first off Captains starter Kyle Landis. With one out in the second inning, Joe Mahoney walked. The next batter Kieron Pope double Mahoney home and the Shorebirds led 1-0. The Captains tied it up off the Shorebirds starter Aaron Odom in the third inning when Sanchez drove home White. The Captains took a 2-1 the lead in the fourth inning when Nash doubled home Matt Brown. The Captains added a run in the fifth inning on a Jeff Hehr RBI single and scored more eight in the sixth inning highlighted by a two run single by Brown. Nash had two doubles and two RBI’s in the game. Josh Judy got the win in relief to up his record to 3-0 pitching three scoreless hitless innings and striking out five.

The Captains and Shorebirds wrap up their three game series on Wednesday morning with a 10:35 AM game. RHP Chris Archer (1-1, 0.63) gets the start for the Captains against the Shorebirds LHP Tony Butler. After the game the Captains travel to Kannapolis for a four game series beginning Thursday.
