Rob Leary has joined the organization as Field Coordinator and Mickey Callaway has moved from his role as High-A Kinston pitching coach to Pitching Coordinator in 2012. Both of them join Travis Fryman (Infield Coordinator) and Alan Zinter (Hitting Coordinator) in coordinator roles at the top level of the Indians Player Development System. At the moment the Indians do not have the Outfield/Baserunning Coordinator role filled as they are still considering candidates after Gary Thurman left the organization last month.
Leary, 47, spent the last two seasons as a Major League Staff Assistant for the Boston Red Sox, organizing spring training workouts and assisting the coaching staff with advance scouting and pre-game and on-field preparations. He was Boston’s Field Coordinator for seven seasons (2003-09) and worked in the Florida Marlins PD System from 1995-2001. The San Mateo, CA native began his 26-year career in professional baseball as a player in the Montreal Expos system in 1986. He will also oversee and instruct the organization’s catchers.
Callaway, 36, is beginning his third season in the organization after spending the 2010 season at Class-A Lake County and 2011 at Class-A Kinston. He pitched professionally for 13 seasons from 1997-2009, including parts of five seasons at the Major League level with the Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers and Anaheim Angels from 1999-2004.
Mike Sarbaugh returns to the Triple-A Columbus Clippers for a third season where he has led the Clippers to consecutive Triple-A and International League Championships. Ruben Niebla returns as pitching coach and Phil Clark steps in as hitting coach. Clark was the High-A Kinston hitting coach in 2011.
Chris Tremie returns to manage the Double-A Akron Aeros for a second season, and Tony Arnold returns as pitching coach and Rouglas Odor returns as hitting coach as well.
Edwin Rodriguez joined the organization a few weeks ago and will be the High-A Carolina manager, and Scott Erickson has joined the organization to be the pitching coach at Carolina. The hitting coach role is still to be determined. Erickson is entering the professional coaching ranks for the first time after compiling a career Major League record of 142-136 with a 4.59 ERA in 389 games (364 starts) over 15 big league seasons with six teams (2360.2 IP, 2586 H, 1203 ER) from 1990-2006.
Dave Wallace will now be the manager at Low-A Lake County after managing short-season Single-A Mahoning Valley in 2011 and serving as the organization's Catching Coordinator. He will now only manager as the coordinator duties have been passed onto Leary. Jeff Harris returns as pitching coach and Jim Rickon returns in his role as hitting coach as well.
Ted Kubiak moves down to be the manager at short-season Single-A Mahoning Valley, his 19th season in the Indians organization and his 53rd season in professional baseball. Greg Hibbard returns as pitching coach and Tony Mansolino returns in his role as hitting coach.
Anthony Medrano returns as manager for rookie level Arizona. Steve Karsay joins the Indians organization as pitching coach in Arizona, and Junior Betances is the new hitting coach after coaching in the Dominican Summer League last year. Karsay rejoins the Indians organization after spending four seasons in the Cleveland bullpen from 1998-2001 where he was 15-14 with a 3.23 ERA in 164 games (223.0 IP, 210 H, 80 ER, 191 K). Overall, he spent 11 seasons in the big leagues from 1993-2006 with Oakland, Cleveland, Atlanta, New York (AL) and Texas and was a first round pick of the A’s in 1990. This is his 1st season of instruction at the professional level.
