He's a 26 year old minor league reliever with a career 4.00 ERA (and a stellar 7.20 showing in 25 innings in AAA this year, which got him demoted). Not exactly a huge loss there, you know?
Yeah, last year at this time he had a lot more value, so we protected. Indians saw him as a swing guy or an early lefty out of the pen....but he really struggled this year and with better prospects in need of roster placement this offseason and it was inevitable that Santos was removed. And, it is possible that they like Rundles more than Santos so are choosing to stick with him since he can help now where Santos can't.
The removal of Santos from the 40 man roster (and losing him to another team) does not upset me.
It does mildly surprise me and encourage me. Santos was a player I was thinking might be removed to create space for someone else but I wasn't sure if they (the Tribe FO) would actually pull the trigger on that move.
I am also slightly suprised that the movement with the 40 man roster has begun. I was figuring that the Tribe had gone this long with Snyder, Santos and others that the would probably wait until after the final game to start making space.
That should be enough to protect all the Rule 5 candidates (Crowe, Stevens, etc.) while leaving a couple of roster spots open (for a change) to pluck some Rule 5 guys of our own.
Stupid question: why are the Indians trying to sneak guys through waivers in September? Many teams have room on their 40-man rosters that they won't have at the end of the season when they have to account for the players on the 60-day DL.
Kevin, it is a question a lot of people have raised. I am surprised by it myself, as I would figure that the best time to try and sneak these guys through would be in Oct/Nov this offseason. Not now when rosters are expanded and teams have more roster space because of 60-day DL guys or because they do not yet have to roster their prospects for this year's Rule 5. Strange though. No big loss with either of them, but just odd on the timing.

I see no way we leave any roster space for the Rule 5. Just too many guys to protect.
