reluctant to even ask... but surprised to see the phantom kelvin diaz on the list... does this mean he sorted out his visa issues?
Interesting list, Tony. When I wrote about this last year they did two different, overlapping camps. One was for veterans (like Mills, Adam Miller, Drennen, Goedert, Rondon, David, Weglarz, Nash and Lewis) who were there for specific needs or to make up time lost to injury and then there was the young guys camp. It seems like there are A LOT of veterans there (2 or more minor league seasons) than what was there last year.
Are they doing two camps this year?
A couple of things stick out:
Kelvin Diaz is there: Doesn't mean his visa thing is done as he can be in the US for short periods of time even if it isn't completely cleared up. Reust and Baker, the Aussies, and some of the DOminican players were like that in extended this year. Still, Diaz wasn't there last year so there may be some hope.
No Darling Read, who, in his second year in the Dominican, tore up the league. Interesting! Lino Diaz told me last year that they use the FIL to get the Latin guys who they plan to have on a US team the next year acclimated to life in the US.
Also interesting to see them convert Abraham into a catcher and then listing Recknagel as a firstbaseman after he told me when I interviewed him they were going to have him focus on catching in the FIL.
Nice to see Araujo here. Note that he was one of the two guys they actually spent over $100,000 on last year in the foreign signing time between July and August. He had a really good year in the DSL this year which is something that tells me maybe we need to be a little more aggressive in our spending in Latin America.
