Indians Non-Tender Three Players

Today the Indians announced that they will not tender 2010 Major League contracts to right-handed pitchers Adam Miller, Anthony Reyes, and Jose Vera. All three pitchers are now free agents and the 40-man roster currently stands at 37 players.

Reyes is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent last season and Miller is still trying to recover from a complicated and career threatening procedure to the middle finger of his throwing hand. Both pitchers likely remain in the organization, though Veras will likely seek another opportunity elsewhere.

Hey, Tony ~ Really appreciate all your info, both during the season and in the off season. Just want to say that Shapiro just gave us a glimpse into his lack of planning again. He kept Reyes on the 40 man roster, loses Lofgren in the Rule 5 Draft, then non-tenders Reyes a week later. Sloppy. I guess Reyes and Lofgren weren't #3 starters in his eyes. Maybe he's one of your buds, but seems to me like he's just a few gallons short of MLB GM material.

Other articles says Miller was just removed from the 40-man roster, not non-tendered. I'm just wondering what the difference is. Either way, that is too bad about Miller. Hopefully they can get another contract worked out with him. As for Veras, I am sad and disappointed to see him go. I thought he would be a big part of the Tribe's bullpen next year because I thought he really improved in September last year.

Really makes you realize that the Tribe does not see lofgren in there futures plans. I wish him the best of luck, but with all the young arms in AAA, I am guessing they thought he had little to no chance to crack the MLB team this year and that is why they risked him

Tony: Can you explain why the Indians would keep Miller, Reyes, and Veras on the 40-man roster before the Rule 5 draft (and risk losing Wagner, Wright, Pino, etc.) and then take those players off the 40-man roster days later? Thanks!

I'll have an update later tonight, but two of these guys were just roster placeholders (Veras/Reyes) while the decision on Miller came about just recently after his setback. Miller was non-arb, but is a free agent (though likely to remain with the org).

There are things the Tribe does not do well but 40 man management seems to be outstanding. They got both Reyes and Miller out of the draft and kept them in the organization. Veras would not accept a deal that made financial sense to Indians. Looks like the way is paved to add another PTBNL to the 40 from the Shoppach trade, most likely Talbot. Sure looks to me like they planned all of this from beginning to end with a potential cost of Lofgren and a dump of Veras when the cost was too high. Not impressed with the critical thought to the contrary but to each their own.
