The Indians announced today that they have traded catcher Kelly Shoppach to the Tampa Bay Rays for a player to be named later. The player to be named must be selected on or before December 20.
Shoppach, 29, hit .214 (58-for-271) for the Indians in 2009 with 14 doubles, 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 89 games (33 RS, 33 BB, 98 SO). Kelly spent four seasons with the Indians primarily in the back-up catcher role after being acquired from the Boston Red Sox in January 2006.
As to who the player to be named will be, who knows at this point. But the timing of when it has to be decided seems to be implied the Indians have a list of players to choose from and they opted to wait as the players on that list may all be Rule 5 eligible.

Well there's another spot open on the 40-man. Any chance we pick up a guy in this Rule 5... or even draft one of our own, like Scott Lewis who we're suddenly afraid of losing?
Chance is there to pick up a guy Rule 5. Still unsure whether we go that route, but we will see. I do think the PTNBL will end up being someone who is on the Rays Rule 5 eligibles list. And no, I don't think we pick one of our own guys to protect them.
Why the heck would you pick someone already in house because you suddenly are afraid of losing him? Has that even happened before?
Would someone like Scott Lewis really make teams nervous about losing him? We already have 716 lefties like him that are healthier as it is...
Trust me, teams have picked their own player in the Rule 5 before. It's very, very uncommon, but it has happened.
I read a quote from Shapiro and he said the PTBNL has a good chance to be on the Opening Day roster next year. Sounds like we might get immediate help, not a Single A raw prospect. I would think and hope it would be a pitcher. As for Shoppach, I will miss hime but this trade needed to happen. We need a get a look at our young catchers.
