Manager Aaron Holbert gets the promotion to Kinston after spending two seasons as the manager of Low A Lake County. Holbert led Lake County to back-to-back winning seasons. In Holbert’s 2008 managerial debut Lake County went 75-65, capturing a first half division title and losing in the South Atlantic League Finals. Last season, Holbert’s club went 71-66, just missing the South Atlantic League playoffs.
Holbert was originally selected in the 1st round (18th overall) in the 1990 draft by the St. Louis Cardinals. He played professionally for 17 seasons with eight different organizations (St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa Bay, Boston, Florida, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati), making his Major League debut in 1996 with the Cardinals. Holbert returned to the big leagues in 2005, playing in 22 games with the Reds. Holbert owns a career minor league average of .271 with 77 home runs and 559 RBI in 1,542 games. Holbert ranks among the all-time career leaders in nearly every offensive category with the Triple A Louisville Bats.
Tony Arnold returns to Kinston for another stint as pitching coach. 2010 will be Arnold’s 18th season as a coach in the Cleveland Player Development System; Arnold was the pitching coach in Kinston in 2007 and 1995. In 2007, Arnold was a part of Mike Sarbaugh’s coaching staff that led the K-Tribe to an 87-52 record. Four K-Tribe pitchers won ten or more games that season and the staff era was 3.53. As a pitching coach for Kinston in 1995, Arnold helped guide the K-Tribe to a Carolina League title. Arnold teamed with Holbert on the Lake County coaching staff last season and was in Double A Akron in 2008.
Arnold was an All-American at the University of Texas in 1981, drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 10th round of the 1981 draft. Arnold played professionally for ten seasons in the Orioles and Los Angels Dodgers Organization. He made his Major League debut with the Orioles in 1986 and made 27 appearances for Baltimore in 1987, his only other year in the Majors.
Rouglas Odor returns to Kinston as a coach for the second straight season. The former K-Tribe player was manager of the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League in 2008. Odor was manager of the Short Season A Mahoning Valley Scrappers in 2005 and 2006. Odor managed the Rookie Level Burlington Indians from 2001-2004 and the Venezuelan Summer League Indians in 1999 and 2000.
Odor played for the Kinston Indians in the 1989, 90 and 92 seasons. Odor hit .261 for Kinston in 1990, leading the K-Tribe with 445 at bats and 21 doubles as the K-Tribe swept both the first and second half titles in the Southern Division. Odor was a 32nd draft pick by the Indians out of the University of New Orleans. After his playing career ended he joined the Indians player development staff in 1995. This is Odor’s 22nd overall season in the Indians organization as a player, manager or coordinator.
