Sarbaugh, 42, will manage at Triple-A Columbus after spending the last two seasons as the Manager of the Double-A Akron Aeros. The 2010 season will mark his 21st season in the Indians organization and his 7th season as a manager in the Indians Player Development System.
Last year Sarbaugh guided the Aeros to an 89-53 (.627) record and the Eastern League Championship while being named the Eastern League’s Manager of the Year. The Aeros .627 winning percentage was fourth-best in all of Minor League baseball. The championship marked his third as a Minor League manager (2004 at Mahoning Valley & 2006 at Kinston) and 2009 also marked the second time in the past three seasons he has been named a Manager of the Year (2007 Carolina League) in his respective league. Sarbaugh owns a career managerial record of 455-331 (.579).
Skinner, 48, will manage the Double-A Akron Aeros after spending the last nine (9) seasons on the Indians Major League coaching staff. The 2010 season will mark his 21st season in the Indians organization as a player or coach. Skinner also managed at Akron during the 1998 and 1999 seasons and played for the Canton-Akron Indians from 1992-1993.
Prior to being a coach on the big league staff, Skinner spent six seasons from 1995-2000 managing in the Indians Player Development System. In his six seasons, his teams finished in first place in four of the five seasons and he was named the league Manager of the Year in three of the six campaigns (1996 South Atlantic League, 1997 Carolina League and 2000 International League) and in 1998 at Akron was named USA Today Baseball Weekly’s “Minor League Manager of the Year”. In addition, he earned “Minor League Manager of the Year” honors from Baseball America and The Sporting News following the 2000 season while at Buffalo. Skinner also served as the Indians interim manager during the second half of the 2002 season in which the Indians went 35-41 (.461) after the all-star break. He owns a career minor league managerial record of 448-333 (.574).
In other news, the Indians today also announced the hiring of Ruben Niebla as an Assistant to the Major League Coaching Staff and Jeff Desjardins as the Major League Assistant Athletic Trainer.
Niebla, 37, has been a pitching coach in the Indians Player Development System for each of the last nine seasons since joining the organization in 2001. Last year he served as the pitching coach for Double-A Akron which won the Eastern League Championship while posting the league’s lowest team ERA.
Prior to beginning his coaching career, Niebla was signed by the Montreal Expos as a non-drafted free agent in 1995. He played professionally for six seasons with the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers and in the independent leagues.
Desjardins joins Director of Medical Services Lonnie Soloff and Assistant Athletic Trainer Rick Jameyson on the big league staff after spending the last nine seasons as an athletic trainer in the Indians Player Development System.
Desjardins has spent the last three seasons since 2007 as the athletic trainer for the club’s Triple-A affiliates in Buffalo and Columbus. In 2006, he was named the Eastern League Athletic Trainer of the Year while at Akron. Desjardins originally joined the Indians organization in 2001 as the athletic trainer at Burlington after serving as the athletic trainer at Dover High School in Dover, New Hampshire from 1996-2001. A graduate of Plymouth State College in Plymouth, New Hampshire, Desjardins is a certified athletic trainer and a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
Manny Acta’s Major League Coaching Staff now consists of Tim Belcher (Pitching Coach), Tim Tolman (Bench Coach), Scott Radinsky (Bullpen Coach), Steve Smith (Infield & Third Base), Sandy Alomar (Catchers & First Base) and Ruben Niebla (Assistant to the Major League Coaching Staff).
The Indians will announce the rest of the 2010 Indians Player Development staff assignments at a later date.
