2012 Depth Chart

This is updated look at the Cleveland Indians organization from Cleveland down to Low-A Lake County. This listing is my own view and the Cleveland Indians in no way assisted in putting it together. That said, I do feel I have a good understanding of where a lot of players will be placed so this is a good snapshot of how I think things look at the moment.

As moves are made this offseason I will continue to update this listing. So while Matt LaPorta may be listed as the starting first baseman in Cleveland, this will likely change as we get deeper into the offseason.

The players listed at the bottom are question marks as they do not appear to have a spot in the organization and may be on the bubble. The one exception are the extra players listed under Low-A Lake County as most of these players will be assigned to extended spring training and then play for one of the short season affiliates later in the year at Single-A Mahoning Valley or rookie level Arizona or even Low-A Lake County later in the season.

The players with a (+) are what I think will be piggyback situations. With several pitchers expected to start and have their workload monitored this gives an opportunity for the Indians to essentially have six starters at a given level. Danny Salazar and Alexander Perez are expected back next season as starters but will likely have to piggyback with someone, and Dillon Howard is not going to go out and throw 150 innings his first pro season so he may piggyback with someone like Jake Sisco, which would be a good way to break both in at Lake County.

Players listed under the "DH" does not mean they will be the full time DH, it just means they will be in the everyday lineup but have to split time at a few positions, something of which is hard to illustrate in a depth chart.

As you get deeper and deeper into the system, particularly at the Single-A level in Carolina and Lake County it becomes harder and harder to determine who goes where, especially with the pitchers. So if a player is not listed on a roster now it does not mean in a month or two I won't put them on a roster. In the end it only matters what the Indians officially unveil at the end of March as between now and then injuries, trades, etc will occur which will change the makeup of this depth chart considerably.

This depth chart will be linked in the tabs above right below the header, so check back often as this chart will continue to be updated all offseason as moves are made or I gather more information.

One last note....the (*) means the pitcher is left-handed.

One thing I notice is that we have a ton of relief pitching depth. I expect the Tribe to deal a few of the relief guys to clean out the system and acquire some decent major league players. I would maybe guestimate a few different starting points for 2012 (ie Lowery to High A, House to the AA rotation with Wright to the pen, Burns to AAA pen, De La Cruz to the AAA rotation with Kluber to the pen).

Yep. We already saw this today with LHP Chris Jones being traded to the Indians for RHP Derek Lowe. I don't think this is the last deal along these lines this offseason, and potentially more complex with more/better players involved.

Oh, and yes, mistake on my part. Lowery definitely will be in High-A. I'd expect him to split time at catcher, 1B and DH and Monsalve to get the rest of the time at catcher.

No chance on J. Aguilar starting out in AKR this year?

Tony,

I see you have De La Cruz in the BP. Is this permanent, or just a reflection of the fact that he finished the season in the BP? Given his upside, I would be disappointed if the Indians gave up on him as a starter, but I guess I understand.

Is Kluber still a SP option? I know he has the stuff, but like De La Cruz, he hasn't been able to make that translate on the mound.

Toledo, I am torn on Aguilar starting in Akron, so for now just have him in Carolina to start. That said, as we move onto into the offseason and analyze and talk about things more with player placement, I may end up slotted at Akron next year.

DetDawg, with De La Cruz it really is a matter of need and space. First off, who does he bump from the rotation of Huff, McAllister, Gomez, Barnes, Rondon, and Kluber in Columbus? As it is I had to bump Kluber to a piggyback role to get Rondon in the rotation....and Kluber is a guy they value as a starter and they definitely want to keep Rondon a starter for now. So maybe De La returns to Akron as a starter, but if he is in COlumbus he is likely in the bullpen unless a flurry of trades is made opening a spot in the rotation there. Besides, it is my understanding the Indians are not too happy with the development of his strike throwing ability and the bullpen is where he is likely heading. His role/use in winter ball is evident of that.

Small question. Where's former rule V pick Jose Flores in this?

No longer with the team....he is a minor league free agent and has not been resigned (yet).

where are Slowey and Canzler on the depth chart???
