Scrappers Fall in Final Game 5-2
On Wednesday night, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers concluded the 2009 season with a 5-2 loss in the deciding game of the NYPL Championship Series to the Staten Island Yankees. The Scrappers finished the season with a Pinckney Division Championship and a franchise record forty-nine wins in the regular season.
Scrappers starter Clayton Cook went the first five innings and gave up one run on four hits while striking out three. Vidal Nuno pitched the next inning and gave up one run on three hits. Austin Adams came in in the top of the 7th and gave up three runs on one hit while walking one. Tyler Sturdevant took over in the 8th, going the next 2/3 of an inning, giving up two hits while striking out one. Guido Fonseca pitched the final inning and gave up one hit.
Mahoning Valley scored first in the bottom of the 2nd when Rafael Vera’s RBI triple knocked home Ben Carlson. Chun Chen then followed with an RBI double to drive home the second run. The Yankees scored single runs in the 5th and 7th tying the game at 2-2. In the top of the 8th, Staten Island scored three runs to take their first lead of the game. Scrappers bats were unable to make a come back in the final two innings. The Staten Island Yankees won the NYPL Championship two games to one with a final score of 5-2.
