Scrappers Win 3-1, Take 1-0 Series Lead

The Indians short-season Single-A affiliate Mahoning Valley Scrappers took a commanding 1-0 series lead last night with a 3-1 victory over Brooklyn. It was a big road win where they now return home tonight for Game 2 and possible series clincher of the best-of-three series. Game time is at 7:05 p.m. EST at Eastwood Field with left-hander Vidal Nuno getting the start for the Scrappers.

The hero of the game for the Scrappers was 19-year old right-handed starter Clayton Cook who was sensational going 5.2 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and a walk while racking up six strikeouts. Right-handed relievers Antwonie Hubbard and Cory Burns combined to throw 3.1 innings of quality relief allowing just one run on three hits and had five strikeouts.

The Scrappers did just enough offensively to win a well pitched ballgame by both teams. Outfielder Jason Kipnis led the way going 2-for-4 with a home run and RBI, and shortstop Rafael Vera chipped in going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

The Scrappers win last night makes them a perfect 7-0 in the opening round of the NY-Penn League playoffs. In their three previous playoff trips in 1999, 2000 and 2004 they swept their opening round series 2-0 each time. If needed, right-hander Brett Brach will start the deciding Game 3 of the best-of-three series on Thursday night at Eastwood Field, though right-hander Marty Popham had been scheduled for tonight so this could change as well.

I think Cook is really opening some eyes in Mahoning Valley. Oddly enough, you might be able to say the same about the entire rotation.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Cook fly up the prospect lists next year, though.

Also, nice work Kipnis... where do you think he'll start next year?

Cook's the most promising prospect on that staff if you ask me....and obviously so given his age and where he is. I'd expect him to move up the lists as well...maybe even Top 30. I think Kipnis opens in Kinston next year.

Nuno the new starter replacing Popham. Not sure why.. but.

Yeah, had already updated that earlier this morning per a note I got to list Nuno the starter and remove Popham. Not sure why the change was made.
