Akron Aeros right-hander Paolo Espino will replace closer Bryce Stowell on the Western Division roster for next week’s 2010 Eastern League All-Star Game, the league announced on Tuesday. Espino has ranked among the EL leaders in wins all season and takes the spot of the recently promoted Stowell, who was a fan selection for the contest. The Aeros will also send third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall and outfielder John Drennen to this year’s All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 14th at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg, PA.
Espino, a native of Panama City, Panama, currently holds a 7-4 record on the season with a 4.16 ERA in 17 outings (11 starts). He leads the team with 80 innings pitched total and ranks second with 69 strikeouts after beginning the year as a starter before shifting to piggyback duties for left-hander Nick Hagadone. Espino delivered at least 4.2 innings pitched in each of his first 11 appearances, holding a 3.28 ERA after permitting just one hit in five frames of relief against the Erie SeaWolves at Canal Park on June 1st.
The 5’10”, 190-lb. pitcher spent the vast majority of the 2009 season with the Class A Kinston Indians. He was 9-6 in 22 games (21 starts) for the K-Tribe, finishing with a Carolina League-best 2.59 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He finished third in the Indians Player Development System in wins (11) and ERA (3.01) while also making six appearances for the Class A Lake County Captains and a spot start in Akron. Cleveland selected Espino in the 10th round of the June 2006 Draft out of The Pendleton School in Bradenton, FL.
The Indians transferred Stowell to Class AAA Columbus Sunday after he spent six weeks with the Aeros this season. The California native did not surrender a run in 22.1 innings pitched across 14 outings (one start) in Double-A. The 23-year-old then made his Clippers debut Monday and overall on the year, he has a 0.74 ERA with 75 strikeouts against only 20 walks in 48.2 innings. Cleveland originally selected Stowell in the 22nd round of the June 2008 Draft out of the University of California, Irvine.
