The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won 2-1 Friday night at Eastwood Field beating the Jamestown Jammers for a second straight night. Chase Burnette's solo home run with the game tied at 1-1 was the eventual winning run as the Scrappers improved to 8-7 on the season.
Jordan Cooper picked up his first win as a professional pitching six innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and striking out four. Nick Kirk came in and picked up his third save of 2010 for the Scrappers.
With the win, the Scrappers pulled even with the front running Jammers in the Pinckney division. The Scrappers will go for the three-game sweep of Jamestown on Saturday night at Eastwood Field. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
Clippers complete sweep, win 4-3
The Columbus Clippers completed the sweep of the Indianapolis Indians on Friday night at Victory Field, winning, 4-3 in front of 11,530 people.
Jordan Brown continued his great series against Indianapolis as he delivered the game-winning two-run single in the eighth, scoring Jose Constanza and Josh Rodriguez. The Columbus win gave the Clippers a six-game lead in the International League West Division.
The Clippers started the game quickly in the first inning as Josh Rodriguez singled to left and was driven home by Luis Valbuena, as he hit his first triple of the year to right field. The Indians responded in the bottom of the first inning as Kevin Melillo scored on a ground ball by Jim Negrych, tying the game up at one apiece.
The Clippers regained the lead in the fourth inning when Wes Hodges doubled home Brown on a shot to center field, his 20th double of the season. The Clippers didn't hold the lead for long as Akinori Iwamura had an RBI triple in the fifth inning, followed by an RBI double in the seventh, giving Indianapolis a 3-2 lead.
Yohan Pino started for Columbus and pitched into the seventh inning before being relieved by Jensen Lewis. Lewis earned the win by pitching one-and-a-third innings and striking out one while Vinnie Pestano came on in the ninth for fourth save of the year.
The Clippers next five games are against the Toledo Mud Hens. Columbus travels to Fifth Third Field for the next three before returning to Huntington Park for the final two.
Aeros Win Fourth Straight, Defeat Bowie 9-4
The Akron Aeros offense stayed hot in Maryland Friday night as they defeated the Bowie Baysox 9-4 thanks to a season-high four home runs. Jerad Head, Matt McBride, Lonnie Chisenhall and Beau Mills all homered in the contest as the Aeros won their fourth game in a row. It was yet another crucial win for Akron as they moved back to .500 for the season at 40-40 overall, moving just 2.5 games behind the Baysox (43-38) for second place in the Western Division.
Head helped the Aeros begin their domination of left-handed Bowie starter Nate Nery in the top of the second. After back-to-back outs by McBride and Mills began the frame, the right fielder Head launched the next pitch into the left field bleachers for a home run.
Shortstop Greg Miclat led a Baysox response in the bottom half of that second as he smashed a two-out, two-run homer against starter Eric Berger. Akron center fielder Jordan Henry promptly began the third with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI base hit to right field by Lonnie Chisenhall, tying the game at 2-2.
The Aeros broke the game open from there, knocking Nery out of the game with a five-run fifth inning. Henry singled and after two straight groundouts, McBride hit his sixth home run of the week to left field. Two singles followed while John Drennen then doubled home a run and Espino scored two with a two-bagger of his own to create the 7-2 advantage.
Reliever Shane Lindsay replaced Berger in the fifth as the Akron offense continued to shine. The third baseman Chisenhall homered with two outs in the sixth against rehabbing Orioles reliever Mike Gonzalez while Mills led the seventh with another solo shot.
Trailing by seven runs, there was virtually no shot of a home comeback for Bowie although they certainly threatened in the final two frames. Right fielder Tyler Henson tripled to start the eighth and scored on a fielding error by Head while a Carlos Rojas sacrifice fly plated the final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Lindsay (1-0) earned the win in his first relief appearance since returning to the active Akron roster on Wednesday. The Australia native struck out four batters in two innings pitched with one walk and two hit by pitches, as he followed Berger who allowed two runs in his four frames of work. Nery (0-3) struggled and took the loss on the night, permitting two homers and the first seven runs on 12 hits overall.
Five Aeros finished with exactly two base hits in the victory while the left fielder Drennen led the way with two doubles and a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games. McBride has now homered in four of five games this week and leads the team with 10 home runs on the season. The home run by the first baseman Mills was also his fourth of the season and his first since May 3rd, including a 16-game stint on the disabled list.
Akron hopes to defeat Bowie again Saturday night for the sixth game of this weeklong road trip. The contest begins at 7:05 p.m. at Prince George’s Stadium and features a pitching matchup between lefty Kelvin De La Cruz (1-5, 5.94 ERA) of the Aeros and righty Steve Johnson (3-5, 5.12 ERA) of the Baysox.
K-Tribe falls to Myrtle Beach 4-2
Kinston dropped the rubber match of a three game series 4-2 to Myrtle Beach, Friday night in South Carolina.
Myrtle Beach got on the board in the bottom of the third inning off of Kinston starting pitcher Joe Gardner. Gardner gave up a lead-off double to Mycal Jones. After striking out Cory Harrilchak, Mike Jones delivered an RBI double to give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.
Pelican’s starting pitcher J.J. Hoover shut down Kinston early, but the Indians would finally get to him in the top of the sixth. Lucas Montero led off the frame with a single. Bo Greenwell then laid down a sacrifice bunt to get Montero to second base. After a strike out by Karexon Sanchez, Kyle Bellows delivered with an RBI single to tie the game at one.
Gardner would run into trouble against the Pelicans in the bottom of the sixth inning, walking Mike Jones to begin the frame. After Mike Jones was retired on a fielder’s choice grounder off the bat of Travis Jones, Dan Nelson drew a walk to put runners at first and second. Luis Sumoza then got the green light on a 3-0 pitch, driving the Gardner offering to the right field wall. Both Jones and Nelson scored on the Sumoza triple to give the Pelicans a 3-1 lead. Gardner (6-3) took his second straight loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings. Gardner walked three and struck out six.
The Pelicans would add an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning off of K-Tribe reliever Matt Langwell. Langwell walked two of the first three batters he faced, setting the table for a Mike Jones RBI single. Langwell had a 9 1/3 inning scoreless streak broken up, giving up one run on one hit in two innings of work. Langwell walked a season high three batters and struck out four.
The Pelican’s J.J. Hoover (5-5) got the win, scattering five hits over six innings. The Pelican’s Brett Oberholtzer pitched the final three innings of the game, giving up just one run on one hit as Kinston pinch hitter Doug Pickens drove home Karexon Sanchez with an RBI single in the ninth inning. Kinston managed six hits in the loss as Bellows went 2-for-4.
The K-Tribe returns to Historic Grainger Stadium for a six game homestand starting Saturday at 7pm. Austin Adams will get the start against the Advanced A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Frederick Keys.
Whitecaps Shutout Captains 1-0
Chris Sedon hit a solo home run off of Captains starter Brett Brach in the top of the third inning for the lone run of the game as the West Michigan Whitecaps defeated the Lake County Captains 1-0 on Friday. The Whitecaps have shut out the Captains 1-0 in three different games this season. All runs against the Captains in the last three games have come via the home run ball. They have surrendered eight homers in their last four games.
Brach (1-3) took the loss pitching five innings allowing one runs on three hits, walking two and striking out three. Nick Sarianides came on in the top of the sixth inning and threw three scoreless innings allowing one walk and striking out five. Francisco Jimenez pitched the ninth inning and did not give up a run.
Whitecaps starter Jared Wesson did not get a decision working 3.1 scoreless innings allowing two hits, walking two and striking out six. Miguel Mejia (1-0) followed Wesson and got the win pitching 3.2 perfect innings striking out two. Matt Little pitched a scoreless inning and Kenny Faulk threw a scoreless ninth inning to get his fourth save of the year.
The Captains and Whitecaps wrap up the series on Saturday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending LHP Vidal Nino (2-2, 6.51) to the bump to oppose RLHP Nathan Newman (0-3, 3.77).
