Columbus returns home, falls to Toledo, 9-4
The Columbus Clippers and Toledo Mud Hens each had streaks broken in tonight's, 9-4 win by Toledo. Toledo ended its 11-game losing streak while Columbus' seven-game winning streak came to a halt.
The Mud Hens broke the game open in the sixth inning with four runs on only three hits in the inning. Scott Sizemore, in his first game back from the disabled list, helped by ripping a two-run single to right field and was driven home by Will Rhymes' double to right. The Clippers aided the Mud Hen outburst with two errors in the inning, one by Jared Goedert and another by Nick Weglarz. The Clippers tallied four errors as a team in the game.
Goedert, like he's done so many times before, made up for his fielding miscue in the top half with a home run in the bottom half of the sixth inning, a solo shot to left field off of Alfredo Figaro. Figaro pitched six complete innings, giving up only two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out five.
The Clippers would get an RBI double by Josh Rodriguez in the seventh and an RBI single by Lou Marson in the eighth, cutting the Toledo lead to 9-4, but that's all Columbus would get on the night, as Larry Parish won his 541st career game as the manager of Toledo, the most in Mud Hen history.
Jeanmar Gomez started for Columbus but failed to finish the sixth inning as he was tagged for five runs on nine hits. The loss took Gomez to 6-8 on the season.
The Clippers and Mud Hens conclude their five-game, two-city series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Huntington Park. The Clippers will send Yohan Pino (7-4, 5.38) to the mound as the Clippers look to begin another winning streak.
Trenton Pitching Dominates in Aeros 3-1 Loss
The Trenton Thunder pitching staff limited the Aeros to a season-low one hit Tuesday night at Canal Park in evening up this four-game series with a 3-1 victory. Four Thunder pitchers combined to record six strikeouts against five walks total while their offense scored the deciding two runs in the top of the seventh inning against Akron starter Scott Barnes. With the loss, the Aeros are now 41-43 on the year and remain 3.5 games behind the Western Division’s wild card spot while Trenton improved to 52-32.
Barnes and Thunder southpaw Wilkin de la Rosa engaged in a scoreless pitcher’s duel through the four first and a half innings of the contest. Left fielder John Drennen recorded the lone Akron hit in the bottom of the second on a two-out single to right field.
Three walks by de la Rosa in the bottom of the fifth inning helped the Aeros strike first in the contest. Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall then promptly greeted new reliever Cory Arbiso with a fielder’s choice, plating catcher Damaso Espino for the only Akron run.
Trenton responded in their next opportunity, snapping a streak of 12 consecutive batters without a hit. Edwar Gonzalez smacked a one-out home run in the top of the sixth against Barnes, just barely lofting a pitch over the right field bleachers to tie the score at 1-1.
After Arbiso mowed down the Aeros in the bottom of that frame, Barnes remained in the game for the problematic seventh. He permitted a leadoff single, a fielder’s choice and another single before allowing a tough two-out walk to Rene Rivera to continue the frame. Thunder left fielder Jack Rye then delivered the game-winner with a lining two-run single to Jerad Head in right, scoring a pair of runners and knocking Barnes out of the game.
Neither team threatened significantly in the final two innings as Trenton relievers combined to retire each of the final eight Akron batters in the game.
Arbiso improved to 1-1 with the win as he pitched 2.2 perfect innings of relief. Barnes (4-8) took the loss despite the quality start, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts and Thunder closer Ryan Pope earned his third save of the year.
The Aeros stranded seven base runners on the night despite just one hit and the team’s previous low hit total for the season was two against the Altoona Curve on April 20th.
Akron hopes to provide more offensive against the Thunder Wednesday night in the third game of this four-game set at Canal Park. Lefty Eric Berger (3-4, 5.19 ERA) starts for Akron against Trenton’s Lance Pendleton (7-3, 3.54 ERA) in the 10th meeting this year between these two teams.
Captains Take Game and Series with 4-3 Win
In the top of the ninth inning with the game tied at three, Delvi Cid with two outs singled up the middle to score Ben Carlson from third. Lake County went on to defeat Lansing 4-3 to take the series.
The Captains jumped on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Tim Palincsar reached on a one out walk from the starter Ryan Tepera. Chris Kersten with two outs ripped a triple into the corner in right field to score Palincsar and Lake County led 1-0.
Chris Hopkins doubled in the bottom half of the first inning and scored on a Kevin Ahrens’ RBI single to tie the game up at one.
In the fifth, Dwight Childs reached on a walk. Cid stepped up and singled putting runners on the corners for the Captains. Palincsar singled to right scoring Childs putting Lake County back out in front 2-1.
The Captains’ scored again in the seventh getting a little help from the Lugnuts. Ben Carlson singled to get things started off. Childs laid down a sacrifice bunt moving the runner into scoring position. Argenis Martinez grounded out to third and that allowed Carlson to reach third base. A few pitches later from Nestor Molina a ball got by Karim Turkanami and Carlson scored easily for a 3-1 lead.
Lansing responded in the seventh inning following a leadoff base hit by Eric Eiland. Ryan Schimpf doubled off the wall in left field putting runners on second and third with one out. Hopkins hit a ground ball just out of the reach of a diving Carlson at first, but Kyle Smith was backing him fielding the ball and throwing to the pitcher Nick Sarianides covering first. Hopkins was called safe and Eiland scored, but the slow developing play also allowed Schimpf to test the arm of Sarianides and slide into home before the tag was applied to tie the game up at 3-3.
Lake County jumped right back in the ninth inning; Ben Carlson smoked a one out double down the right field line. Roberto Perez entered to pinch hit for Childs and drew a walk, but on ball four, the ball got away from the catcher and Carlson was able to move to third.
Nick Sarianides (6-2) picked up the win after blowing the save, tossing three inning allowing two runs on four hits. Brian Slover (3-4) suffered the loss his third loss to the Captains in 2 weeks, giving up a run, on two hits in the ninth. Matt Packer started the game for the Captains going six strong innings giving up just one run on six hits, matching his career high with nine strike outs.
Lake County returns to Classic Park on Wednesday night to host Fort Wayne for a three game series beginning at 7PM. Making the start for the Captains will be RHP Brett Brach (1-4) verses the Tin Caps’ LHP Pedro Hernandez (2-3).
