When Jordan Brown's baseball career is complete, he could become a mail carrier, as he continues to deliver in the clutch with the bases loaded. He delivered again on Sunday night against the Pawtucket Red Sox in the fifth inning with a bases-clearing double, propelling Columbus to a 5-4 victory.
Brown's three-run double highlighted a four-run inning, their sixteenth of the year, and allowed Columbus to move from one run down to three runs up after its completion. Brown, on the season with the bases loaded, is now 10-for-13 with 26 RBI's. Jose Constanza, Josh Rodriguez and Luis Valbuena all scored on the Brown hit, as the trio combined to go 4-for-12 in the game with an RBI and two walks.
The Red Sox jumped out to an early lead against Carlos Carrasco in the first inning without registering a hit, as leadoff man, Ryan Kalish, drew a walk and maneuvered around the bases, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Nava. The Sox would add another run on two hits in the second inning as Aaron Bates drove home Jack Hannahan with an RBI double to right field.
Carlos Carrasco started for Columbus but only went four innings, leaving the game early for the second consecutive start. He gave up just two earned runs on three hits, while walking four and striking out three. Jeremy Sowers would replace Carrasco, and earned the win, as he didn't allow a hit in two innings of scoreless work relief. The Sox would tack on a run in the seventh and eighth innings to make things close, but the bullpen team of Shane Lindsay and Vinnie Pestano shut the door.
Aeros and Phillies Suspended, Tied at 5-5
Sunday's finale between the Aeros and the Reading Phillies was suspended in the bottom of the fourth inning and will resume on Tuesday, August 17th. The score was 5-5 with two outs in the frame before the rain halted action and resulted in an afternoon-ending 31-minute rain delay. Akron right fielder Jerad Head homered for the fifth time in eight games as the Aeros remain 53-47 on the season and Reading is 49-50.
Center fielder Jordan Henry began the game on a strong note as he doubled and scored on sacrifice fly in the first. Akron then continued to pounce on Phillies starter Ty Taubenheim in the second, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from left fielder John Drennen while Head followed with a two-run homer to right on his first pitch.
Reading responded in the bottom of that second as Kevin Mahar provided a solo home run with one out against lefty starter Kelvin De La Cruz. A bases loaded walk to Matt Rizzotti in the third then cut the deficit to only 4-2 for the host Phillies.
Akron added their final run on a run-scoring single from second baseman Jason Kipnis in the fourth while De La Cruz left the game in the chaotic fourth. A double, three walks, a single and a wild pitch scored a pair of runs before reliever Bryan Price entered the game and forced the inning's second out on a fielder's choice. With Rizzotti at the plate and facing a 0-1 count with runners on first and third against Price, the rain halted play.
The continuation will take place on August 17th starting at 6:05 p.m. and will be followed by that evening's regularly scheduled game in seven innings. That night marks the start of yet another three-game series at First Energy Stadium in Reading for the Aeros, the final meetings in a stretch of 14 games in four weeks between these two teams. Todays statistics for both teams will only count after the completion of the resumption of the game.
Wilmington Beats Kinston 10-4, K-Tribe Splits Series
Wilmington pounded K-Tribe pitching for ten runs on eleven hits and three home runs on their way to a 10-4 win on a scorching Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. Nick Francis hit two home runs, including a grand slam and had 6 RBI to lead the Blue Rocks to the victory. During the afternoon contest the heat index made it to 114, as the temperature reached 98.
Wilmington struck early, as Patrick Norris led off the game with an infield single and stole second. After a groundout moved Norris to third, Wil Myers blooped a single to left to put the Blue Rocks ahead 1-0.
In the fourth, the Blue Rocks started a two-out rally against Kinston starter Joe Gardner. Ernesto Mejia singled to center and Nick Francis drove a home run to left center to give Wilmington a 3-0 lead. Wilmington added on in the fifth, as Rey Navarro hit a leadoff single to center. The next batter, Rene Oriental crushed a two-run homer to left to make it 5-0. After Gardner loaded the bases, reliever Travis Turek came in and walked Adam Myers to score a run and push the lead to 6-0.
Gardner (8-5) had perhaps his roughest outing of the season, giving up six runs on on seven hits in four innings. He walked two, struck out two and gave up two home runs. Gardner allowed a season high in runs, hits and home runs. He gave up two homers in the game despite allowing just 2 home runs in his first 14 starts with Kinston.
Kinston got on the board in the sixth on a leadoff home run to left by Chun Chen, his second dinger of the season, to cut the lead to 6-1.
Wilmington blew the game open in the seventh inning. Turek walked a man and hit a batter before Christian Colon knocked a hit to left field to load the bases. After Turek left the game with what appeared to be a lower leg injury, Tyler Sturdevant came on to face Francis. Francis blasted a grand slam off the scoreboard in right center to give the Blue Rocks a 10-1 lead.
Indians first baseman Nate Recknagel hit his fifth homer of the season, a solo shot in the seventh inning, to make it 10-2. In the ninth, Karexon Sanchez hit an RBI triple to right. Jeremie Tice followed with an RBI double to right to cut the lead to 10-4.
Kinston dropped the final two games of the series to settle for a split. The K-Tribe went 4-3 on the seven game homestand.
Chiefs Late Comeback Downs Captains
Justin Bour singled home two runs in the top of the eighth inning to put the Peoria Chiefs ahead for good as they defeated the Lake County Captains 4-3 on Sunday. This was only the Captains fifth loss when leading after seven innings and they are now 42-2 when leading after seven innings.
The Chiefs got a run in the top of the fourth inning when with one out Justin Bour doubled and scored when Jonathan Mota followed with a RBI double and it was 1-0. The Captains tied it at 1-1 when Adam Abraham hit his eighth home run of the year and second in as many nights. The Captains grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kyle Smith singled and Jason Smit followed with his sixth home run of the year and the Captains led 3-1. The Chiefs made it a 3-2 game in the top of the seventh inning when Jae Hoon Ha led off the inning with a triple and then scored on a ground out by Nelson Perez.
Captains starter Vidal Nuno did not get a decision pitching six innings and allowing one run on five hits while striking out a season high eight batters. Jeremy Johnson (3-2) came on in the seventh inning and took the loss throwing three innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out two.
Chiefs starter Jeff Antigua got a no decision working two scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out four. Antigua was coming off the disabled list and was working with a limited pitch count. Su-Min Jung followed Antigua in the third inning hurling 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on three hits and striking out seven. Larry Suarez (1-3) picked up his first win of the year working two scoreless innings allowing a hit and a walk. Ronny Morla worked the final 1.1 innings to register his second save of the year.
Scrappers drop fourth straight, lose to Spikes, 1-0
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost to the State College Spikes 1-0 tonight at Eastwood Field.
With the loss, the Scrappers have now dropped four straight games.
Despite getting the loss, Alex Kaminsky pitched well giving the Scrappers six innings, allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out two. His only mistake was an Adalberto Santos RBI triple, the lone run for the Spikes.
Brooks Pounders came in from the bullpen for the Spikes and got the win pitching three scoreless innings and giving up two hits.
Jhonathan Ramos recorded his first save for the Spikes.

I thought that De La Cruz was starting to improve, but that doesn't seem to be the case. His control problems continue, and he no longer appears to be the groundball pitcher that I recall him being before the elbow strain.
