Gimenez Promoted, Redmond Released

The Cleveland Indians today announced they have purchased the contract of catcher/outfielder Chris Gimenez from Triple-A Columbus.  To make room on the Major League and 40-man roster, the Indians designated catcher Mike Redmond for assignment.

Gimenez, 27, has spent the entire season to date at Columbus as he has hit .276 (54-196) with 32 runs scored, 10 doubles, 9 HR and 32 RBI in 55 games.  He has appeared in 34 games in the outfield, 18 at catcher, 3 at first base and 1 game at third base with the Clippers.  With runners in scoring position Gimenez has hit .304 (17-56) with 3 HR and 22 RBI.  He was outrighted to Columbus on February 24 to make room for the signing of Russell Branyan but remained with the Indians in big league camp as a non-roster invitee.

Last year, Gimenez began the season at Columbus and spent the last four months of the season with the Indians as he was recalled on May 31.  He made his Major League debut on June 3 at Minnesota and belted his 1st Major League hit and home run on June 4 at Minnesota off Scott Baker.  With Cleveland Gimenez appeared in 18 games at first base, 14 games in left field, 7 games in right field and 8 games at catcher.  He wears #8.

Redmond batted .206 (13-63) with 7 runs scored, 4 doubles and 5 RBI in 22 games with the Indians in 2010.  He appeared in just 3 games since June 8th.

Any chance Toregas gets promoted to Columbus because of this?

Toregas promoted to Columbus.

Marte on notice -- yet again.

Hopefully a final notice for Marte.

For what reason do you want Marte out? Marte is a good backup. Heck, if he was given a chance to start he might put up numbers better than or at least equal to what nothingness we've seen from Peralta this year, and Marte is a better defender than Peralta, clearly.

Nothing personal with Marte, he's actually a good guy, but for the love of all that is holy is it time to move on. If he sticks around the rest of the year, so be it. But I want nothing to do with him after this year. Guy has been here five years now and has never, ever proven anything at ML level. I always hear the argument if he would just get consistent playing time, but I don't subscribe to it. Guy had a two month trial in the second half of 2006 and was not good. Had an extended look in 2008 after Blake was traded and an extended look last Aug/Sept as well. Has never, ever shown he can hit. Never one hot streak to merit more playing time. Nothing. He is a AAAA player whose defensive skills are eroding by the day and is considered an average defender these days. The glove used to be of value and helped ease the pain of his bat, but no more. I would just rather go in another direction with Marte and use Nix in the short term at 3B or Goedert.

So you have changed your mind about Nix being in the way of younger players?

Also in my opinion there is no comparison with peralta, Marte's defense is simply better.

Now, without going into too much detail, I think your explanation is just a bit hypocritical. There is a certain other player whom you are always promoting here, and aside from less defensive skill, less pedigree, less praise from scouts, etc, said player is also not really impressing this year in limited at bats, only difference is his at bats are in AAA, not the majors. And both of these players had great success at hitting in 2009 which in both cases could have "resurrected" their status or simply created a potential status as a major leaguer. I don't see why you are so anti-Marte.

Oh no, I prefer we go with the kids for sure. But since we are talking about Marte, I would just as much rather go with Nix than him. That should be enough to tell you how valuable Marte is.;-)

And in all honesty, contract value aside, as baseball players and how they play, give me Peralta over Marte any day as the everyday 1B (this is not an endorsement for keeping Peralta of that he is a good player....again enough to show how valuable I think Marte is).

What guy in Columbus am I promoting? Brown? If that's who you are referring to, yes, by all means give me him anyday over Marte too...though he obviously doesn't play 3B.

I meant 3B for Peralta/Marte above.

But brown's numbers in AAA aren't impressive so how can they be impressive in the majors to any greater degree than Marte who mashed in AAA last year.

The big difference there is career ML plate appearanced: Marte 800+, Brown 0

All Marte has proven is he is a 4A player who will likely stick around another 5-7 years as a fringe MLer as a ML depth option for many teams in AAA and get an occassional, short call to the bigs.

I'm more inclined at this point to see what is behind Door #2, #3 and so on. I already know what is behind door #1. Give me Goedert, JRod, Brown, whoever instead and just see what happens.

Too bad they released Redmond. He had alot more to teach these young guys. Solid career stats and experience is needed to bring these young guys all the way in.

Sally, best of luck to Redmond. He was a class act and an excellent communicator/teacher with his pitchers. I think he has a future as a coach once he ends his playing career.
