Captains' Cook Anchors 3-1 Win
In his Lake County debut, Tim Palincsar delivered an RBI single to right field to score Kyle Smith giving the Captains a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Lake County defeated Lansing 3-1, behind the strong pitching of Clayton Cook and Tyler Sturdevant.
The Lugnuts jumped out to an early lead in the first inning; Ryan Goins doubled to left and advanced to third on a balk by Cook. Yan Gomes hit a two out RBI single to score Goins and give Lansing a 1-0 edge.
Roberto Perez led off the fifth inning with a double ripped down the left field line. Kyle Smith stepped up and sent a ball deep to left center over Kenny Wilson to score Perez with a double.
The Captains up 2-1, added some insurance in the seventh following a Trent Baker leadoff double. Baker advanced to third with some heads up base running on a ball that got away from the catcher Gomes. Chris Kersten drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield making it 3-1.
Clayton Cook (4-4) was impressive tossing six strong innings allowing just one run on three hits, walking three and striking out three for the win. Sturdevant picked up his second save of the year. He pitched the final three innings not allowing a run, giving up just one hit, walking two and striking out a season high six. Sturdevant closed the game striking out the final five hitters he faced. Dave Sever (2-5) suffered the loss allowing two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings, walking two and striking out five.
Lake County and Lansing will wrap up their series on Tuesday night at 7:05PM from Cooley Law School Stadium. The Captains will start LHP Matt Packer (6-4) matched up against RHP Ryan Tepera (7-3) for the Lugnuts.
Streak hits seven in comeback win, 5-4
The Clippers continued their winning ways Monday night in dramatic fashion, getting a two-run double from Jared Goedert in the ninth inning to come from behind and sweep the Toledo portion of a two-city, five-game series with the Mud Hens, 5-4.
Goedert's hit plated Cord Phelps (who walked to lead off the frame) and Jose Constanza (who singled). It was the first blown save of the year for Jay Sborz of the Mud Hens and made a winner out of reliever Jensen Lewis (2-0).
Vinnie Pestano worked a perfect ninth for his fifth save of the year, giving Columbus a seven-game winning streak and a nine-game lead in the International League West.
The Clippers scored twice in the second inning, getting a Nick Weglarz inside-the-park home run in the process. Cord Phelps also doubled home Lou Marson. After falling behind 3-2, the Clippers tied things up in the fourth, when Constanza's infield single scored Marson.
Carlos Carrasco was responsible for all four Toledo runs, lasting five innings before a solid bullpen helped bail him out.
The Mud Hens, trying to shake a 10-game losing streak, turned to picking their lineup out of a hat, but it was to no avail, and now they'll try to stop an 11-game streak Tuesday night at Huntington Park.
Alfredo Figaro (6-6, 4.59) will get the ball against Columbus' Jeanmar Gomez (6-7, 5.26), with a first pitch set for 7:05.
Aeros Score Seven Runs in Seventh, Win 9-3
A crucial seven-run seventh inning powered the Akron offense Monday night at Canal Park as the Aeros defeated the visiting Trenton Thunder 9-3 in the first game of a four-game series. A rowdy crowd of 6,859 enjoyed Dollar Dogs in downtown Akron and witnessed the Aeros storm back in the seventh with a season-high tying offensive burst. Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall and designated hitter John Drennen each had productive nights while Alex White delivered yet another quality start as Akron improved to 41-42 on the season and the Eastern Division-leading Thunder fell to 51-32.
Chisenhall helped the host Aeros score early against Trenton starting pitcher Andrew Brackman. After the 6’10” right-hander retired the first two batters of the first inning, Chisenhall unloaded on a lining home run to right field, and Drennen later delivered an RBI single off the glove of first baseman Marcos Vechionacci to give Akron a 2-0 lead.
The Thunder finally scored against White in the top of the fourth thanks to two straight singles and a sacrifice fly by Brandon Laird. White cruised through the next two frames before reliever Bryan Price entered the game in the seventh and allowed the go-ahead runs on two doubles, a single and an error by second baseman Jason Kipnis.
Now trailing 3-2, the Akron responded against a trio of Trenton pitchers in the bottom half of that seventh. Drennen led off with a triple to right field and Jerad Head hit an RBI double while both Tim Fedroff and Damaso Espino greeted new reliever Kevin Whelan with singles. Whelan then hit Cristo Arnal with a pitch to load the bases, and after finally recording the first out of the inning, he allowed a clutch two-run double to Kipnis.
Josh Schmidt replaced Whelan following that double, and Chisenhall promptly smashed yet another RBI two-bagger to right field. Drennen provided the final run of the contest with his second single, scoring Chisenhall and giving the Aeros a six-run edge.
Price (3-2) earned the win despite his rocky relief outing, allowing four hits and two runs along with a walk and a pair of strikeouts. Brackman (0-3) took the loss despite an impressive performance through the first six frames, permitting four runs (three earned) on eight hits. The Thunder scored just one run in six innings against White, giving the young right-hander his seventh quality start as he now has a 1.70 ERA in nine Double-A outings.
Chisenhall finished 3-for-4 on the night with his eighth home run of the season and three RBI and the Aeros collected six extra-base hits overall. Drennen also finished with three hits and two RBI, Kipnis drove in a pair with his seventh-inning double and first baseman Matt McBride extended his hitting streak to eight straight games with a single in the first.
This home stand continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. for a Two for Tuesday against the Thunder. Akron left-hander Scott Barnes (4-7, 5.55 ERA) matches up against Trenton southpaw Wilkin de la Rosa (2-3, 5.68 ERA) in the contest.
Kinston Falls in Series Finale 11-3 to Frederick
A five-run seventh inning by Frederick led to a 11-3 blowout win over the K-Tribe on Monday night at Grainger Stadium. Kinston (6-5, 42-39) took the series from Frederick two games to one.
Frederick started the onslaught in the first inning against K-Tribe starter Joey Mahalic. Kyle Hudson walked and Jacob Julius roped a double to left center field to score Hudson and give the Keys a 1-0 lead. In the third, Miguel Abreu's RBI double made it 2-0. The Keys added three more in the fourth on an RBI single by Brian Ward and a two-run single by Xavier Avery to extend the lead to 5-0.
Kinston rallied in the bottom of the fourth against Frederick starter Nathan Moreau. Karexon Sanchez singled and scored on an RBI double by Jeremie Tice. Doug Pickens followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Keys blew the game open with a five-run seventh inning. Buck Britton hit an RBI single, Pedro Florimon belted a two-run triple, and Ward and Avery added RBI singles to give the Keys a 10-2 lead. The five runs in an inning matched a season high allowed by K-Tribe pitching. Ten men came to the plate and there were six hits, which were both season highs against the Indians. In the eighth, Billy Rowell blasted a solo homer to dead center field that cleared the 25-foot high batter's eye to make it 11-2. Kinston plated a run in the bottom of the inning on an Abner Abreu RBI double.
Mahalic (3-3) took the loss after his roughest outing of the season. He gave up five runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Moreau (2-0), coming off of a nine inning no-hitter in his Carolina League debut last Wednesday at Salem, gave up two runs on four hits, walked one and struck out four.
Kinston will have an off day on Tuesday and then continue the homestand with a three-game set against the Salem Red Sox on Wednesday night at 7 pm. T.J. House will pitch for the K-Tribe.
