Seems to me that there are 10 names that stick out as the first 10 who would be protected from the Rule 5...

Weglarz, Brantley, Gomez, De La Cruz, Brown, Donald, Hodges, McBride, Lofgren, Rivero, virtually in that order.

Anyone jump ahead of those guys Tony?

That's pretty much the list of guys who will be considered for the roster, though I'd omit Rivero. He won't be rostered, nor will a team take him.

A lot still to be determined here these last two months of the season, and a few of these guys could find some time as September callups (Brantley, Brown and maybe Hodges). Lots of fat needing trimmed from the big league roster. After looking at it, after all the fat is trimmed at least seven spots will be made available. A trade or two may open up another spot or two. In the end, I think between now and November eight more guys on this list are rostered.

I don't think McBride will be rostered either. His season reminds me a lot of Goleski's in 2006. There is a chance he could be selected Rule 5, but he'd be a big longshot to stick. Plate discipline isn't all that great and his OBP is poor. The power and RBI totals are there, but he'd get eaten up against big league pitching at this point.

I'm iffy on De La Cruz. If they roster 8 guys, then he will be one of them. But if they roster 7, I think he could be the one left unprotected. Coming off injury and not pitching above Single-A, I don't care how good you are, that's hard to keep in the big leagues all year.

I'll look into the Rule 5 situation much deeper and analyze it once the season ends. Things could be A LOT clearer by then.

Thanks for the big response Tony, appreciate it very much.

Looking through the 40-man, I have a pretty good idea of who I think will be gone from the roster before November (including a looming trade or two), but I think I'll wait around until the end of the season or until that discussion does indeed arise.

Glad to know nearly every one of the guys I listed (sans Rivero, of course) will likely make the roster.

I agree with the names you listed although Pablo Espino looks good too. Which players will be removed from our 40 man roster to get down to 40? Joe

hi tony how are you i hope good , i from dominican republic and i life in florida , i am good fan of kelvin de la cruz i wi like to know if hi is goin to be in the 40 men roster .. for this year,,,?

Jose, I am not sure about Kelvin. Prior to the injury this year he was a slam dunk to be rostered, but after missing almost a whole season with a serious injury and only about 10-12 starts at the High-A level, who knows. I think it is 50-50. I will have a better read on it when I research and do my piece in late-Oct on who should be rostered.

Tony, are Espino, Pino, and Tomlin now a big part of this conversation? Their stats certainly show it.

Going back to the original comment I made, I think Pino & Tomlin could have completely jumped over Hodges for the listing, and McBride too if he can't prove he can catch.

So certainly this could be a 13-person discussion, rather than the 10 I originally had listed. Obviously Brantley's already been added, so he's a "lock", and per your findings seems like Brown's a lock as well. I think the only other slam dunks on the list are Weglarz & Gomez, and then there's a whole lot of sorting out to do beyond that.

Fun.

Espino had a good year, but he gets no consideration for Rule 5 or roster protection. He won't be rostered and will be with the Indians next year. Hasn't really pitched above A-ball and doesn't throw hard, so see no way anyone is interested in him.

Tomlin I think gets handled much like Herrmann from last year. Won't be rostered, and I don't think gets taken Rule 5. Pino is a guy who I think could be rostered as he is majpr league pitching depth in the pen/rotation and his versatility would be an asset. Plus, Indians picked him up so can't see them running the risk of letting him go.

I also think that McBride has little chance to be rostered or taken Rule 5. Even if he shows he can catch some.

I'll try and break this down some shortly after the season ends with a lengthy peice on who should/shouldn't be rostered.
