Ramon Pena Named Director Of Latin Operations

The Indians made another announcement today in regard to the structure of their organization, this time naming Ramon Pena as their new Director of Latin American Operations.

Pena is a veteran, respected scout with 28 years of scouting experience under his belt. He spent 21 years with the Detroit Tigers and the last three seasons with the New York Mets as Special Assistant to the General Manager, where he oversaw Latin American Operations. He has signed over 40 players that have reached the big league level, including Francisco Cordero, Fernando Rodney, Jair Jurrjens, Frank Catalanotto, Ramon Santiago and Omar Infante to name a few. He was the Detroit Tigers' 1997 Scout of the Year. He also currently serves as a Sports Advisor to Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez.

"We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Ramon's experience, track record and influence join our organization," said Cleveland Indians Assistant General Manager, Scouting Operations John Mirabelli. "We are excited to add Ramon and feel he could impact our organization in a very positive way."

Former Director of Latin Operations Lino Diaz is still with the organization and is going to be working directly with their young Latin American players on the cultural transition they face when they first start playing professional baseball in the United States.
