Updated 2010 Spring Training Depth Chart

Here is an updated depth chart with what looks like the roster setup at the moment from Cleveland to Low-A Lake County.  There is still a lot of grey area with the rosters, so it will be interesting to see just what the final rosters turn out to be in two weeks.

I will continue to tweak and update this listing from now until the end of spring, of which a new depth chart will be posted with the opening day rosters for all levels and then site contributor Jason Eddy will be taking over and updating the depth chart throughout the season with the actual rosters at each level.

Note: The maximum active roster size at Cleveland, Kinston and Lake County is 25 players whereas at Columbus and Akron it is just 24 players. Also, guys listed as bubble/rehab guys (rehab guys have a * next to name) are listed in the column for the team they likely will be playing for a spot on this spring. Some interesting players will certainly be left off the active list when the season starts.

You have Wyatt Toregas listed as the backup C at both the MLB and AAA level, fyi.

Nice work. Of all the "bubble" guys, who do you think has the best shot at actually making the major league club? Sowers jumps out immediately, but I can't help but think that Bixler isn't quite a sure thing to be the utility guy.

Interesting that you have Laffey in the bullpen. That actually looks like a good bullpen. But Masterson, Carmona, Huff, Talbot is truly frightening. It wouldn't be shocking to go through that rotation and get 8 innings out of them combined. I'd be more comfortable with Laffey in the starting roll, replacing Huff or Talbot ... I'd think Judy and Wagner would deserve a promotion to AAA to start the year. They might be needed soon in Cleveland, after poor Sipp, Chris Perez and Smith have their arms fall off ... It's a good thing the Indians are in the Central, where KC and the White Sox should have awful offenses. Imagine the carnage if they were in the East, facing the Yankees and Red Sox 18 times

Oops, fixed the dual Toregas listing...obviously Redmond if the MLB backup catcher. Thanks.

Grudz has the best shot of making the team, as I think they prefer he does to complete the veteran bench setup it appears they are going with. Bixler would then go to Columbus and be the utility guy there. I think unless they option out Laffey or Huff, that Sowers is a goner.

As for Laffey, I have him in the bullpen because of the three guys vying for the 5th spot between him, Sowers and Talbot, Laffey is the more versatile and has some experience in the bullpen. I think it fits him much better than the other two, and sets Talbot or Sowers up to have much better success than pitching in the bullpen. Laffey to me is a decent option in any role, so fine if he opens in the bullpen....and given the setup of this rotation he will get A LOT of work.:-)

And Judy and Wagner deserve a promotion, but the problem is we have too many guys. So some will open in Double-A. With Jensen Lewis and Jess Todd in the Columbus bullpen it really limits who can be called up.

is juan lara in camp this year?

Thanks

As far as I know, Lara is not with the team anymore. I'll check around, but I don't believe the Indians re-signed him as no transaction came through about it.

Tony thanks for the update, that is truly a bummer for lara. hope he can get a break with a new team.

when u coming out to the desert for spring training?

Thanks,

CP

I'll be out March 11-20....can't wait!

nice man, hope to see u then!

CP

How can you possibly have Judy in AA? He was dominant this spring and some people said he had a chance at starting the year with Cleveland.

I love Judy....but the guy had zero shot of making the Cleveland bullpen out of spring training. His being up with the big league team was more an orientation for him to the big leagues and for the staff to see him. I think he has a great shot to make the Indians bullpen later in the year, but for now my feeling is he starts in Akron and then moves quickly to Columbus. I wouldn't be surprised if he did make the Columbus roster though!

With the way Talbot has been pitching in spring training it will be almost impossible for the Indians to not have him in their rotation to start the year.

Given his strong start so far I'm really curious as to how he'll fare during the rest of the season. I never expected him to see time in Cleveland when they got him for Shoppach.

Looks like every one wins in that deal!

Yep, Talbot unofficially has one rotation spot locked up. Now it really is a question of whether they go one of two routes:

- Huff in rotation, Laffey in bullpen
- Laffey in rotation, Huff to AAA (he won't go to bullpen), and then either Saul Rivera or Hector Ambriz being the last pen guy.

I think the former has a higher liklihood of happening....though apparently Carlos Carrasco could throw it all out of whack as he is now being considered for a spot.
