Game Recap 5/15: Smit's Career Night Leads Captains To Win

Smit's Homerun Completes 8-6 Comback Win

Down by a run, Jason Smit hit a 2-run homerun to leftfield capping off a four run eighth inning as the Captains came from behind to defeat the TinCaps 8-6 on Saturday afternoon. Smit finished with a career high four RBI in the win.

Fort Wayne scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning. Danny Payne led things off with a double, and eventually scored on a Nate Frieman RBI ground out.

The Captains took the lead in the second, following a one out walk to Roberto Perez and a double by Chun Chen putting runners on second and third. The next hitter, Smit singled in both runners and the Lake County led 2-1.

The Captains added to the lead in third, Casey Frawley tripled and scored on a Jeremie Tice RBI double, making it 3-1.

Fort Wayne closed the gap in the bottom of the third when Freiman drove in his second run on sacrifice fly to right scoring Payne.

The TinCaps took the lead in the fourth, with five consecutive singles. Payne drove in a run, and Everett Williams drove in a pair of runs on his base hit to make 5-3.

Wande Olabisi singled for the third for the third time Saturday in the fifth inning, scoring Jon Alia giving Fort Wayne a 6-3 edge.

Lake County’s bats erupted in the eighth inning, as Bo Greenwell led the inning off with a walk. Perez singled to get on board. Chun Chen then delivered his third triple of the year, to drive in two runs making it 6-5.

The Captains added an insurance run in the ninth playing small ball. Delvi Cid drew a leadoff walk and Frawley moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Greenwell walked, and Tice flew out to right allowing Cid to tag up to third. A wild pitch from Hayden Beard allowed Cid to score and Lake County went up 8-6.

Tyler Sturdevant (1-0) picked up the win pitching a scoreless inning, allowing a hit, walking two and striking out three. Cory Burns picked up his 12th save of the year pitching a perfect ninth. But the most impressive inning came from Preston Guilmet in the eighth. Guilmet entered the game with a runner on, and struck out three TinCaps in a row to hold the lead. Pedro Hernandez (1-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs in 2.2 innings of work, walking two and striking out three.

The Captains (27-10) and the TinCaps (15-21) will wrap up the series Sunday afternoon at 3:05PM from Parkview Field in Fort Wayne, IN. RHP Brett Brach (0-0) makes his second start for Lake County, as he is matched up against RHP Jerry Sullivan (1-2) for the TinCaps.

Clippers drop second straight to Durham, 7-3

The Durham Bulls took game two of a four game set with the Columbus Clippers, 7-3 on Saturday at Huntington Park in front of the fifth largest crowd in the new park's history. In similar fashion to last night's 8-1 win for Durham, the Bulls used early inning opportunities to score first and finished the Clippers off with timely hitting late.

The Bulls were aided by five runs in the top of the sixth inning as Ryan Shealy went deep for the second straight night at Huntington Park, bombing a grand slam over the right-center field fence with one out against starter Carlos Carrasco.

Heath Phillips pitched well for the Bulls, who got out to an early lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI groundout by Justin Ruggiano. The Bulls followed that up with another run in the second inning as Chris Richard doubled to left, driving in Joe Dillon. Phillips pitched 6 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and three earned on 91 pitches and bumping his record to 3-3 on the year. Phillips allowed only three hits in the first six innings before giving up a Brian Buscher RBI single and Jerad Head's first Triple-A home run of his career in the seventh inning before being pulled.

Carrasco got the start tonight for the Clippers and went 5 1/3 innings before rolling his ankle behind home plate backing up a throw at home. He gave up five earned runs on five hits while walking three and striking out two as his record fell to 2-2.

The top of the Clipper lineup struggled tonight as Michael Brantley, Jason Donald and Carlos Santana went 0-for-12 with three strikeouts. On the positive side, the bottom third of the Clipper lineup hit well, as Buscher, Head and Anderson Hernandez combined to go 5-10 with three RBI's and two runs scored.

The Clippers are back in action tomorrow for game three of their four-game home stand against the Bulls. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. as Josh Tomlin (3-1, 3.20 ERA) takes the mound against Aneury Rodriguez (2-1, 2.78 ERA).

Aeros Cruz to Victory over Phillies 5-0

The Akron Aeros started game three of their four game homestand against the Reading Phillies Saturday night at Canal Park and came away with the victory 5-0.

Aeros starter Kelvin De La Cruz took the hill and fired his first five pitches all for strikes. The lefty’s first strike out victim of the night was Quintin Berry that froze his bat on the outside corner for the first out of the game. The bats for both teams were quiet through the first two innings as both pitchers held the opposition in check.

Aeros catcher Damaso Espino broke the silence with a single to right field. The first run came in the bottom of the third inning when left fielder Nick Weglarz doubled, his tenth of the year over the head of Quintin Berry in center field bringing in Espino giving the Aeros the lead 1-0. Weglarz picked up his 26 RBI of the season, which ties him with teammate Beau Mills.

Through five innings, the Aeros had five hits; among those were doubles by Nick Weglarz and Jared Goedert his seventh of the season. Aeros center fielder Tim Fedroff started the bottom of the fifth inning with a rope into left field. The Aeros second run came when Matt McBride grounded into a double-play scoring Tim Fedroff. Kelvin De La Cruz pitched five scoreless innings while striking out four Phillies. De La Cruz did not allow a single hit, he struck out four and walked five and now has a 1.46 ERA on the year.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Aeros offense came alive as Cord Phelps singled to right field, and was moved to second on a John Drennen walk. The Reading Phillies then made a pitching change bringing in Michael Stutes replacing starting pitcher Drew Naylor. The move did not help the Phillies as Espino came through with a line drive single to right field, advancing the runners, which loaded the bases. Aeros centerfielder crushed a triple to deep right center in the gap, bringing all three bases runners in to score and extended their lead to five runs. The bases clearing triple now gives Fedroff 15 RBI on the season. The rally ended when Jared Goedert struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Aeros closed out the last three innings keeping the R-Phils in check with great bullpen production from right-handers Bryan Price, and Zack Putnam. The Aeros picked up their first win of this four game series getting the shutout win 5-0. This marks only the second shutout on the season for the Aeros.

The homestand ends tomorrow at 1:35 p.m., with the Aeros AKR LHP Scott Barnes (0-4, 7.20 ERA) going head to head with Reading RHP Vance Worley (1-2, 4.66 ERA).
K-Tribe Tops Keys 8-3 to Clinch Series

Kinston's T.J. McFarland continued his dominant pitching and Abner Abreu had three hits and three RBI as the K-Tribe beat Frederick 8-3 on Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. The win was the third in a row for the Indians, who have won 8 of their last 10 games. It also clinched their third straight series win.

The Keys struck for a run in the third on a lead-off solo homer by Bobby Stevens off of McFarland. That run snapped a 15-inning scoreless streak for McFarland and also stopped a string of 22 innings where K-Tribe pitching hadn't surrendered an earned run.

The Indians responded with a big fifth inning for the second consecutive night off of Frederick starter Rick Zagone. With two on and two out, Stevens committed an error on a Donnie Webb grounder to third. The next batter, Jason Kipnis hit an infield single that scored two runs. Abreu followed with a two-run double to give Kinston a 4-1 lead. All runs in the inning were unearned.

Kinston came back for three more in the sixth off of reliever Oliver Drake. Lucas Montero hit a two-run triple and Jordan Henry knocked him home with a single to make it 7-1. Abreu added an exclamation point with a solo homer to lead off the seventh, his first blast of the season.

K-Tribe reliever Bryce Stowell gave up a two-run home run to Ronnie Welty in the eighth to cut it to 8-3. In the ninth, reliever Brian Grening left with the bases loaded and no outs, but Matt Langwell came on to record his first save.

McFarland (5-0) allowed one run on four hits in 5 1/3 for the win. He leads Carolina League pitchers in wins and ERA. Zagone (1-4) lost, giving up four unearned runs on seven hits in five innings.

The teams play the series finale on Sunday at 2 pm. Nick Hagadone will throw for the K-Tribe.
