Roberto Perez singled home Chun Chen in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 3-3 tie as the Lake County Captains rallied back to defeat the South Bend Silver Hawks 4-3 on Saturday. The Captains were hit out hit eleven to four in the game.
The Captains started the scoring early when Casey Frawley lead off the first inning with a walk and went to second on a bunt single by Argenis Martinez. Bo Greenwell delivered a single to score Frawley and when Martinez was going to third, the throw from the right fielder went into the stands allowing Martinez to score and give the Captains a 2-0 lead. The Silver Hawks scored a run in the top of the second inning when Alberto Diaz singled home Andrew Fie and it was 2-1. The Hawks took the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Diaz hit his first home run of the year, a two run homer, and it was 3-2. The Captains tied it at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Martinez struck out in what looked like the third out with Delvi Cid at second. The throw to first to complete the strikeout got past the first baseman allowing Cid to score.
Captains starter Brett Brach did not get a decision working four innings allowing one run on six hits, walking two and striking out four. Francisco Jimenez (5-2) followed Brach and took a no decision pitching four innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out a season high six batters. Jeremy Johnson (1-0) made his Captains debut and picked up the win pitching a scoreless ninth inning and striking out the side.
Silver Hawks starter Charles Brewer (3-3) did not get a decision working six innings and allowing two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out seven. Bradin Hagens worked two innings allowing the run in the eighth and he struck out four. Brian Budrow (1-2) allowed the run in the ninth inning and was hung with the loss.
The Captains and Silver Hawks play game three of the four game series on Sunday at 1:00 PM with the Captains sending LHP Matt Packer (2-1, 2.37) to the mound for his first professional start to oppose the Silver Hawks RHP Eric Smith (3-3, 1.42).
Clippers Lose In Extras
Columbus lost a close game on Saturday night to Charlotte, 3-2. The game was tied at 2-2 and went into extra innings until Charlotte infielder Luis Rodriguez drove in the winning run with a two out solo home run in the bottom of the 12th inning. Rodriguez was with the Indians in spring training and the first month of the season in Columbus before being released a few weeks back.
Right-hander Carlos Carrasco showed no ill effects from the ankle injury he suffered a week ago as he put forth arguably his best outing of the season going 7.0 innings and allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 walk, and 3 strikeouts. Vinnie Pestano, Jeremy Sowers and and Jensen Lewis combined to pitch 4 shutout innings and allowed 2 hits, 1 walk, and had 8 strikeouts.
At the plate, outfielder Nick Weglarz made his Triple-A debut by hitting out of the DH spot and went 0-for-4 with a walk and run scored. Infielder Anderson Hernandez was the only player to record multiple hits as he went 2-for-4 with a 2B, RBI, and walk.
Right-hander Jeanmar Gomez is scheduled to get the start on Sunday for the Clippers.
Aeros Even Series, Defeat Senators 4-3
The Aeros beat the visiting Harrisburg Senators 4-3 in before 5,892 fans at Canal Park Saturday to tie up their three-game series at one win each. Akron starter Paolo Espino went six quality innings and earned the win while the Aeros scattered 13 hits throughout the night. The win improved Akron to 17-25 on the year and the Senators fell back to .500 at 21-21.
Harrisburg scored the first run of the ballgame on an RBI groundout by left fielder Jesus Valdez in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back one-out solo home runs in the fourth by Valdez and first baseman Chris Marrero then helped Harrisburg extended their advantage to 3-0. That would be all the damage done against Espino or the Aeros pitching staff on the night.
Red-hot third baseman Jared Goedert helped Akron make a furious comeback in the bottom half of that fourth inning. He began the frame with a single and right fielder Matt McBride following with a walk against Senators starter Tom Milone. First baseman Beau Mills then delivered the big hit of the inning with a double to left-center field scoring Goedert while shortstop Carlos Rivero hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Left fielder John Drennen tied the game at three runs each with a two-out single up the middle to score Mills.
The comeback was finally complete in the top of the sixth as recently arrived DH Jerad Head led off the inning by being hit by a pitch from Harrisburg reliever Hassan Pena. A passed ball by Harrisburg catcher Sean Rooney, his second in as many innings, advanced Head to second base. Drennen then delivered the game-winning fourth run by plating Head with a single to left field.
The Aeros bullpen took care of business from there as reliever Omar Aguilar replaced Espino in the top of the seventh. Aguilar held the Senators scoreless in the seventh and eighth before passing the torch to closer Carlton Smith for the ninth. The visitors stranded one runner in each of these last three innings, but there was never any doubt about the final margin of the night.
Espino (4-2) earned his first career Double-A quality start by lasting six innings and permitting just three hits and three runs while striking out five and Pena (0-2) took the loss by allowing the sixth inning run. Smith earned his first save of the year by walking one and striking out a pair in the ninth.
Akron center fielder Tim Fedroff led the hit brigade with three singles on the night, as three other Aeros had multi-hit performances. Mills collected the only extra-base hit of the night however, as his crucial double in the fourth helped start the comeback. Yet again, Goedert collected a hit Saturday to tie up the season-high for any Akron player with an 11-game hitting streak.
The Aeros and Senators will play the rubber match of this three-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Alex White, Cleveland’s first-round pick in the June 2009 Draft, will make his Double-A debut off against Harrisburg starter Erik Arnesen (2-2, 6.08 ERA).
K-Tribe Falls 2-1 to End Streak
The K-Tribe's season-best 5-game winning streak came to an end in Frederick on Saturday night as a solo home run by the Keys' Jacob Julius in the eighth inning was the decider in a 2-1 Kinston loss. Kinston left a season-worst 15 runners on base and was 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
After the start of the game was delayed an hour and 33 minutes by rain, the K-Tribe struck first off of Keys' starter Ryan Berry, making his Carolina League debut after being called up from Low A Delmarva. Jordan Henry led off the third inning by reaching on an error, and later in the inning Doug Pickens hit a fielder's choice grounder to drive in Henry and give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
The Keys responded in the bottom of the inning when Julius hit an RBI double to score Bobby Stevens and even the score at 1. It stayed that way until there was one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Julius hit a towering home run to left field off of K-Tribe reliever David Roberts to give Frederick what turned out to be the winning run.
Kinston starter T.J. House pitched well but didn't factor in the decision. In 5 innings, he allowed a run on five hits and struck out seven. Roberts (1-2) took the loss, as the home run was the only hit he allowed in 2 1/3 innings. Raul Rivero (3-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win for Frederick, while Jose Diaz pitched the ninth for his fourth save.
The teams meet for a rubber match on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Right-hander Marty Popham, just called up from Lake County on Friday, will make his Carolina League debut as the K-Tribe's starting pitcher.
