Indians Officially Call Up Donald

As mentioned last night on my Twitter page, the Indians have called up Triple-A Columbus infielder Jason Donald. The move was made official this morning when they placed infielder Asdrubal Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left forearm.

Cabrera was injured in the 1st inning of last night’s 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays in Tropicana Field. So far this year, Cabrera was batting .287 (39-136) with 16 runs scored, 6 doubles, a triple, a home run and 7 RBI in 33 games. This will mark Cabrera’s 2nd career trip to the disabled list at the big league level.

Donald, who was obtained by the Indians from the Philadelphia Phillies last July, was optioned to Columbus on March 20 after batting .200 (4-20) with a triple and 4 RBI in 9 games this spring in big league camp. So far this year at Columbus he hit .277 (38-137) with 27 runs scored, 10 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 17 RBI in 37 games. He also stole 10 bases in 12 attempts. He ranked tied for 3rd in the International League in runs scored (27) and tied for 6th in stolen bases (10). A former 3rd round selection in the 2006 June draft by the Phillies, Donald will be making his Major League debut and wears #16.

The Indians now have 3 players on the Major League disabled list (Cabrera, Andy Marte and Anthony Reyes).

Tony,
I'm a little surprised that Rodriguez was brought up from Akron to take Donald's spot. I kinda thought that once Donald went up, that the corresponding moves would be Phelps to Columbus and Kipnis to Akron. Is it still a little too early for those moves?

P.S. Tony- hope your feeling better after your bout w/the 'superbug' ; )

Wayyyy too early to call up Kipnis and Phelps. Those guys need almost a full season at their current levels, and there is no rush. J-Rod was the logical move as he was playing well and has been in Akron for three years now and we now will get a long look at him at SS/2B in Columbus now. And thanks for the well wishes, this bug is still lingering but I'm much better!

wow, Donald went 2 for 3 with a walk and singles in his first two career at bats.

This is signals the end of Luis Valbuena doesn't it?
