Game Recap 5/18: Smit Comes Up Big Again

Smit Lifts Captains Again to 5-2 Win

Jason Smit provided the late night heroics once again on Tuesday night. With the game tied at two a piece, Smit skied a ball deep down the leftfield line, clearing the wall for his second of the season and a 3-2 lead in the eighth. The Captains went on to win 5-2 over the White Caps.

Casey Frawley started the scoring, hitting a solo homerun in the top of third putting Lake County in front 1-0.

West Michigan took the lead in the sixth inning; a one out double from Mike Gosse, followed by a single by Wade Gaynor put runners on the corners. Avisail Garcia ripped a triple down the right field line scoring both runners and the White Caps went up 2-1.

The Captains tied the game at two in the seventh inning when Frawley, who reached on a single, scored when Jeremie Tice reached on an error.

Lake County added some insurance in the ninth when Adam Abraham doubled in Bo Greenwell. Smit scored Abraham on a double that gave the Captains a 5-2 edge.

Danny Salazar settled with a no decision pitching five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four. Francisco Jimenez (5-1) picked up the win allowing two runs on three hits in 2.2 innings. Preston Guilmet faced four batters in 1.1 of work for the save, his second of season, and struck out the side in the ninth to seal it.

The Captains and White Caps will resume their series with the middle game Wednesday morning, with first pitch at 11:00AM. On the mound for Lake County will be RHP Austin Adams (2-3), matched up with West Michigan starter LHP Giovonni Soto (1-2).

Gomez Struggles, Clippers Lose

The Columbus Clippers fell to the Gwinnett Braves 5-4 on Tuesday night. A four run fifth inning for Gwinnett was the difference in the game, and the loss drops the Clippers to 24-16 on the season with a two game lead in the International League's West Division.

Right-hander Jeanmar Gomez got the starting nod and once again he struggled with his command and was unable to put forth a quality outing. Gomez pitched four shutout innings before unravelling in the fifth inning where he gave up four runs and then his night ended in the sixth whem he allowed his fifth and final run. He finished the night going 5.2 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, one walk and did not record a strikeout. Frank Herrmann was excellent in relief again going 1.1 shutout-hitless innings of work with no walks and a strikeout, and Jeremy Sowers a scoreless final inning.

The Clippers piled up ten hits and had three walks, but were only able to scrape together four runs. Shortstop Brian Bixler led the way going 3-for-5 with an RBI, and outfielder Shelley Duncan chipped in going 2-for-4.

Right-hander Yohan Pino gets the starting nod on Wednesday for the Clippers. Game time is 7:00pm.

Aeros Pitching One Hits Curve In Win

Akron’s Scott Barnes, Steven Wright and Omar Aguilar combined to one-hit the Curve as the Aeros took the first game of the series, 2-0, at Blair County Ballpark on Tuesday night. Gorkys Hernandez recorded Altoona’s only hit of the ballgame in the eighth inning.

It was a pitcher’s duel from the get-go as Barnes and Curve starter Justin Wilson (1-4) each tossed up zeroes through the first five innings. Wilson escaped early troubles in the first and second innings to go on and retire 12 in a row before walking Nick Weglarz with two away in the sixth. After the walk to Weglarz, Wilson gave up a two-run homer to Matt McBride and that proved to be the difference maker in the game.

Altoona’s best scoring opportunity came in the sixth inning when Chase d’Arnaud drew a one-out walk from the starter Barnes. Barnes would be removed in favor of Wright before Jordy Mercer’s at bat but Wright walked Mercer to put two on with just one away. After Hector Gimenez flew out, Wright walked Matt Hague to load up the bases. With the bases loaded, Josh Harrison fouled out to right to end the inning and the threat. Akron pitching issued a total of eight walks in the game.

Altoona (22-15) looks to rebound on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. when they take on the Aeros (15-23) in the second game of this short three-game series. Akron sends LHP Eric Berger (0-2, 10.67 ERA) to the hill while Altoona counters with RHP Tim Alderson (2-1, 6.35 ERA).

Hedman was charged with an error, Lucas Montero would score on the play and the inning would continue. After Kyle Bellows was hit by a pitch, Nate Recknagel blasted a Jeremy Kehrt pitch over the left field wall. The three-run shot was Recknagel's third of the season. After Salem cut the lead to 5-3, Kinston put the game away in the fifth inning. Abner Abreu and Kyle Bellows started the inning with back-to-back singles. Pickens and Castillo each had two hits for Kinston, as the K-Tribe racked up ten hits in both games of the double header.
