2011 Indians Rule 5 Draft Eligibles

Bryce Stowell
There was no winter ball action last night as all the teams were scheduled off, so this is a good time to post the updated 2011 Cleveland Indians eligibles for the Rule 5 Draft on December 8, 2011. After the Indians made their final decisions on who to protect in advance of the November 18th roster deadline date, here are the players they are in danger of losing.

For future reference, this listing is linked in the "Reference" tab along the top just below the header.

Someone will take a chance on Trevor Crowe.

Crowe won't get selected. He just cleared waivers where teams could have just claimed him and added him to their 40-man roster and not had Rule 5 stipulations over their head to have him on the 25-man all year. He will be an Indian next year.

Seattle just lost a OF (not making light of tragedy) and Wedgie loves him some Trevor Crowe. This is a lock.

Gotta completely disagree. Crowe has almost no value right now. Again, teams could have simply just picked him up off waivers two weeks ago. If they did not think he was worthy of being picked up then, they surely will not consider him for Rule 5.

Tony, do you think there is a chance that someone could take a chance on Beau Mills? I know he just reached AAA around the midpoint of last season, but he seems to have finally learned how to hit successfully, at least at the minor league level. He would seem to be a potential Rule 5 candidate. I would hate to see him go. I saw him play in Erie against the SeaWolves this past summer, and he hit a towering shot. The raw power is certainly there.

Mills is unlikely to be picked. In fact, any Indians' player is likely to be picked. And in the event someone IS picked, no one is expected to stick on a ML roster all season so they will likely be returned.

Guys like Mills who have no versatility and are just corner infielders are not your typical Rule 5 pickups. Also his prospect stock is still low even after a very good season.

I'll break it down more the week of the draft, but I wouldn't worry about losing anyone and if we do they should be returned.

Is it wrong that, for some reason, the guy I see as highly likely to be picked is Steven Wright?!

A knuckleball and a high 80's, low 90's fastball might lead to some heavy intrigue from opposing teams and, as a quirky guy, might be someone that could be stashed on a ML roster as a swing guy?!

Overall, with Arajuo, Perez, Bryson, Stowell etc, there is some serious talent that's in danger of being lost. But, if the Rule 5 has taught us anything, it's don't over-react before the event as generally the draft is nothing more than an anti-climax.

I've talked to a few different people in the know and the general feeling is that the Indians should not be worried about losing anyone. At least anyone of value. It is sort of like last year where they did not really expose anyone. Sure, JRod and Flores got picked, but as we saw they were returned and have shown to be stalled prospects anyway. I have heard from more than one person that they only needed to roster one guy as the rest were not getting picked or anything to worry about losing. We shall see.

If anyone is picked it would be a hard throwing pitcher or a versatile infielder. That's why Stowell or Bryson seemed worth protecting. It's also why Diaz might have been protected. Roberto Perez is a good enough defender that I could conceive of someone taking him to be a career backup. Araujo is clearly the highest prospect on this list, but he's so far from the majors that I doubt anyone would take a flyer on him. He should rate among our top 10, perhaps top 5 prospects.
