Hernandez, 33, was signed by Cleveland as a free agent on July 1 of last season and split the remainder of the season between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus where he hit a combined .320 (39-for-122) with 10 doubles, 2 HR and 26 RBI in 39 games. He owns a 14-year Minor League career average of .263 (807-for-3071) with 132 2B, 37 HR and 340 RBI in 970 games. He originally signed with the New York Yankees in 1998 after defecting from Cuba two years earlier. He appeared in 5 games with the Yankees at the Major League level in 2003 and appeared in 40 games with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2008-09. In 45 Major League games he owns an average of .237 (28-for-118).
