Around the Farm: August 13

Around the Farm takes a quick look at some of yesterday's performances by Indians prospects throughout the system. The positions listed below are where the player was playing in yesterday's games.

Preston Guilmet – RP, Lake County: 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4. Another dominant outing by the 23-year old Guilmet in a league he is probably too advanced for. In 40.0 innings with the Captains this year he has allowed just 7 walks while striking out 57 batters for a nifty 8:1 strikeout to walk ratio.  He is clearly taking advantage of the less advanced hitters in the Midwest League, and on the season he now has a 2.03 ERA, a .184 BAA, 1.6 BB/9, and 12.8 K/9. Can you say promotion, please?

Carlos Moncrief – OF, Mahoning Valley: 2-for-4, R, 2 2B, RBI. After a very cold start to the season where he hit .167/.255/.214 in June and .204/.291/.357 in July, it appears Moncrief might be finally getting comfortable at the plate as he is hitting .396/.482/.625 in 13 games so far in August.  His recent surge at the plate has pushed him up to a .245/.333/.394 line on the year, and he is starting to show that raw power that scouts really liked when they scouted him as a two-way player two years ago coming into the draft.  He broke in with the Indians as a pitcher and after that did not work out he was converted to the outfield this past offseason and has really started to take to it well.

  • David Huff – SP, Columbus: 7.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R/ER, 3 BB, 3 K. The Huffster now 7-0 with a 3.75 in 8 starts for Columbus this year. Maybe the Indians should have him wear a Clippers uniform in Cleveland?
  • Jose Constanza – OF, Columbus: 4-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, BB. Mr. Electric continues to ignite the Clippers offense and has had a very nice year in first taste at Triple-A level.
  • Cord Phelps – 2B, Columbus: 2-for-5, 2 R, HR, 5 RBI, K. If not for Kipnis, you’d be hearing about this guy as the future everyday 2B in Cleveland sometime next year. A good problem for Indians to have with two high level 2B prospects.
  • Jared Goedert - 3B, Columbus: 2-for-5, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI. Go-Go Goedert has been slumping of late hitting .225 with a .791 OPS in August before the game, but has a big productive night.
  • Kelvin De La Cruz – SP, Akron: 4.0 IP, 4 H, 6 R/ER, 6 BB, 3 K. De La victimized by the walks yet again. Now 54 walks in 81.1 innings with the Aeros.
  • Jordan Henry – OF, Akron: 3-for-5, R, 3B, 2 RBI. Breaks out of 7-for-36 slide (.194) in last ten games with much needed three hit night.
  • Jason Kipnis – 2B, Akron: 2-for-5, R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 K, SB. Seriously, when does this guy start getting consideration for #1 prospect for 2011?
  • Carlos Rivero – SS, Akron: 2-for-4, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI. Nice game, but hit .226/.279/.310 per-All Star and now hitting .226/.287/.345 post-All Star. Where’s the progress?
  • T.J. McFarland – SP, Kinston: 6.0 IP, 7 H, 5 R (1 ER), 0 BB, 6 K. T.J. Mac was done in by some poor defense behind him (3 errors), but picked up right where he left off with a solid outing in his return to Kinston after a brief stint in Akron.
  • Chris Kersten – 1B, Lake County: 1-for-4, R, HR, 2 RBI. Big farm boy from Kansas having a nice year with Captains hitting .263 with a .794 OPS in 47 games.
  • Michael Goodnight – SP, Mahoning Valley: 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K. You couldn’t ask for a better debut from this year’s highly touted 13th round draft pick. Welcome aboard.
  • Kirk Wetmore – RP, Mahoning Valley: 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 5 K. A nice effort, and has now had two very good showings in his last three appearances. Starting to put it together?
  • Nick Bartolone – SS, Mahoning Valley: 0-for-3. First hitless game in six games since call to the Scrappers.
  • Giovanny Urshela – 3B, Mahoning Valley: 0-for-0, HBP. Uh oh. Had to be removed from the game in the first inning after being hit in the hand. Let’s hope it is only a minor injury for this rising star.
  • Felix Sterling – SP, Arizona League Indians: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 K. Another good outing from the 17-year old fireballer from the Dominican Republic.
  • Frangy Colon – SP, Dominican Summer League: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Don’t know a thing about this guy, but love the name!
