Game Recap 8/11: Kaminsky, Bullpen Throw One-Hit Shutout

Kaminsky, Scrappers' bullpen combine for one-hitter

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers won their third straight Wednesday night beating the Staten Island Yankees 2-0 in game two of a three-game series at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

Right-handed pitcher Alex Kaminsky and four members of the Scrappers bullpen combined to one-hit the Yankees. Kaminsky pitched five scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out four to earn his fifth win of the season. J.D. Reichenbach picked up the save pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Shane Greene was saddled with the loss for the Yankees pitching four innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out three.

Kevin Rucker was the difference offensively for the Scrappers going 2-3 with a home run and a RBI and scoring both of the Scrappers runs.

The Scrappers will look for the sweep of the Yankees as they play the final game of this three-game series Thursday afternoon. First pitch is at Noon.

Chiefs, Bixler topple Clippers, 7-3

Early runs and a former Clipper did Columbus in on Wednesday night in Syracuse, as the Chiefs took the third game of their four-game set, 7-3.

Eric Berger allowed all seven Syracuse runs, going five innings and surrendering 11 hits in his first Triple-A loss.

After scoring a single run in the first inning, the Chiefs put up four in the second, the big blow coming on former Clipper Brian Bixler's three-run double. Syracuse then added runs in both the third and fourth innings.

Columbus scored single runs in the fourth and fifth - getting on the board when Drew Sutton's RBI groundout scored Wes Hodges, then again when Ezequiel Carrera's sacrifice fly plated Luke Carlin. Carlin was acquired yesterday in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.

Down 7-2 in the ninth, Columbus capped the scoring when Sutton singled home Hodges. The Clippers were outhit 14-9 on the night.

The series in Syracuse wraps up Thursday night at 7:05, with Carlos Carrasco (9-5, 4.04) on the mound for the Clippers against Shairon Martis (7-6, 4.09).

R-Phils Hold On For 7-6 Victory over Aeros

The visiting Reading Phillies scored seven runs in a chaotic second inning and survived a vicious Aeros comeback for a 7-6 win at Canal Park Wednesday night. Cleveland Indians starter Anthony Reyes walked the first five batters in that second in his new rehab assignment as the Phillies won despite being out-hit 10 to four. Reading improved to 57-58 while the Aeros fell to 58-57 on the season, still trailing the second-place Bowie Baysox by 4.5 games in the Western Division wild card race.

Reyes retired the side in the top of the first, only needing 11 pitches before struggling with his control in the second. The first five batters of that frame walked and Reyes threw three wild pitches to provide for a quick 2-0 deficit. Freddy Galvis then recorded an RBI single and Michael Spidale drew another free pass to knock the Akron starter out of the game.

Left-hander Matt Packer relieved Reyes and allowed all three inherited runners to score on a sacrifice fly, a wild pitch and a run-scoring double. That would be all the damage done against Packer and the Aeros offense responded in the bottom of that second.

Shortstop Carlos Rivero smashed a two-run home run to left field to score right fielder John Drennen and left fielder Tim Fedroff followed with a single to center. After two more walks by Reading starter J.C. Ramirez and a groundout, second baseman Jason Kipnis lofted a ground-rule double over the left field wall to cut the margin to 7-4.

Drennen again singled against Ramirez to start the third and two straight fly outs followed that nearly ended the rally. Catcher Juan Apodaca then smashed a 1-1 offering into the canal in left for a two-run homer of his own to bring the deficit to just a single run.

That would be all of the scoring on the night as both bullpens dominated for the remaining six innings. Akron stranded a pair of runners in the sixth and a failed double steal turned into a strikeout-caught stealing double play to end the bottom of the seventh inning.

Phillies reliever Chance Chapman (2-2) replaced Ramirez and provided 2.2 scoreless innings to earn the victory. Reyes (0-2) took the loss in allowing seven runs in one plus inning with six walks and a hit, raising his ERA to 25.41 in his three appearances for the Aeros this season. Packer then dominated in relief, shutting Reading out for seven frames to and he still leads full-season MiLB with a 1.48 ERA this year.

Drennen finished 3-for-5 with a double while Rivero’s home run was his fifth of the season. Apodaca starred in collecting his third homer in the Eastern League in 2010, his first in Akron, along with a walk and several impressive plays behind the plate.

Reading aims for the three-game series sweep in the finale Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park against the Aeros. It is another Thirsty Thursday at the stadium with fans able to enjoy $1 12-oz. soft drinks and draft beer through the end of the seventh inning. There will also be a special guest appearance and autographs at the game from NABA U.S Heavyweight Champion and Akron's own Nick "The Stoneman" Firtha.

Left-hander Scott Barnes (6-8, 4.83 ERA) hopes to end the recent Aeros struggles against recently promoted Austin Hyatt of the Phillies.

K-Tribe and Salem Suspended by Rain

The K-Tribe game at Salem was suspended with the Indians leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning Wednesday night in Virginia. Heavy rains halted play with a Salem runner at second base and one out in the bottom of the frame. The game will be picked up at 5:30 pm in Salem on Thursday with a seven inning game to follow.

Salem starter Stolmy Pimentel kept Kinston bats at bay until the top of the fourth inning. Karexon Sanchez began the frame with a double. With two-outs in the inning and Sanchez still at second base, Kyle Bellows gave Kinston a 1-0 lead with an RBI double. Bellows came into the game hitting .362 against Salem this season. Kinston starter Austin Adams was solid earlier, giving up just two singles through his first three innings of work.

Captains Fall to TinCaps 10-6

Fort Wayne jumped on Trey Haley and Lake County early and often on Wednesday night sending Haley to his eighth loss of the season. The Captain showed some fight late but fell short 10-6.

Jason Hagerty got a two out rally started against Captains’ starter Trey Haley when he doubled to right field. Nate Freiman drew a four pitch walk from Haley. Jedd Gyorko ripped a double to deep left center driving in two runs and giving Fort Wayne an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.

The Tincaps’ Everett Williams led the second inning off with a walk and advanced to second a Haley wild pitch. Danny Payne grounded out to second to push the runner over to third. Jeudy Valdez hit a sacrifice fly right to score Williams pushing the lead to 3-0. Fort Wayne was not finished Hagerty connected for his second two-out double of the game. Freiman belted his 13th homerun of the year and Fort Wayne lead 5-0.

The Captains’ Chris Kersten crushed a solo homerun in the fourth inning to get Lake County on the scoreboard; it was his eighth of the season making, 5-1.

In the bottom of fourth inning, Fort Wayne responded right back, with a solo homerun by Danny Payne his seventh of the season to make it 6-1.

Delvi Cid doubled with two outs in the fifth inning for the Captains. Casey Frawley singled to put runners on the corners. Adam Abraham cut the lead in half with a two run double to left center cutting the lead in half at 6-3.

Fort Wayne sent ten hitters to the plate in the eighth inning against Captains’ pitcher Nick Kirk. Jonathan Galvez hit an RBI single to score Daniel Meeley. Everett Williams tripled down the right field line to score two runs, brining in Edinson Rincon and Galvez. Jeudy Valdez drove in his second run of the night with his second sacrifice fly for the fourth run of the inning giving the TinCaps a 10-3 lead.

The Captains got back to back singles from Ben Carlson and Jason Smit to start the ninth. Cid drove in both runners with his second double of the night. Cid reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a Frawley sacrifice fly to right field making 10-6.

Steven Osuna (2-2) picked up the win for the TinCaps pitching two scoreless inning allowing just one hit and striking out two. Haley (5-8) suffered the loss giving up six runs on six hits in four innings of work, allowing four walks and striking out three.

Lake County and Fort Wayne will continue their series from Parkview Field at 7:05PM. The Captains will start RHP Clayton Cook (5-7) against the TinCaps RHP Matt Lollis (2-0).
