Game Recap 8/4: Goedert Delivers Game-Winner

Clippers avoid sweep, win 9-8

The Columbus Clippers defeated the Louisville Bats in a rain-soaked affair on Wednesday afternoon, 9-8. The game was delayed after the last out of the top of the seventh inning was recorded for one hour and twenty-two minutes, and after the break, Jared Goedert delivered a two-run double in the eighth. The Clippers ended their four game losing streak while handing the Bats their first loss in 12 games.

Before the rain appeared, both the Clippers and Bats put on an offensive show to remember. The Bats opened the game with three runs off of Yohan Pino, who was hit for four hits in the first, and gave up three consecutive RBI flares to the outfield gaps.

The Clipper offense, which had been stagnant of late, answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half as Clippers' newcomer, Richard Martinez ripped a bases-clearing double to right field, giving Columbus the lead.

After a second inning which saw both Louisville and Columbus add another run, the Clippers added two more in the bottom of the third. Martinez drove home Cord Phelps for his fourth RBI of the game with a groundout to second base and Jose Constanza plated the second run of the inning with a fielder's choice, scoring Jerad Head.

Jeff Frazier led the Bats' charge in the fourth inning with a towering three-run home run to left field. Frazier's blast came just moments after Michael Griffin lead off the fourth with his second home run of the day. Frazier went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with four RBI's and was just a triple shy of the cycle.

Pino, in a disappointing outing, went 5.1 innings, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits while walking three and striking out three. Pino's pitching counterpart, Matt Maloney, was not much better as he gave up seven runs on seven hits in five innings. Jess Todd earned his fourth win of the season.

Aeros Fall Again, Altoona Cruises to 5-1 Win

The Aeros lost for the fifth straight game Wednesday night at Altoona, dropping by the final score of 5-1 against the first-place Curve. A crowd of 3,640 fans at Blair County Ballpark saw Akron muster just two hits overall, both by red-hot second baseman Jason Kipnis, while new starter Corey Kluber struggled in his Indians organizational debut. With the loss, the Aeros (56-53) are now in sole possession of fourth place in the Western Division and Altoona improved to 64-46 on the season.

Altoona ace Rudy Owens was dominant but surrendered the lone run in the top of the first inning. After retiring center fielder Jordan Henry to start the game, Kipnis followed with his seventh home run on a deep shot to right field to give Akron its only lead.

Left fielder Lucas Montero threw out Chase d’Arnaud at home on a play at the plate in the first but the Curve tied the score in the second. A double by Miles Durham preceded a run-scoring error by Carlos Rivero, knotting the game at one run each.

Kluber allowed the hosts to take the lead for good in the next inning, as he walked Andrew Lambo with one out before a single, a double and another walk. Anthony Norman then delivered a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing the advantage to 3-1.

The Curve knocked Kluber out of the contest in the fourth as d’Arnaud and Josh Harrison each singled to begin the frame. Matt Hague later provided the RBI on a single to left field, scoring d’Arnaud before the team stranded the bases loaded. Altoona’s final run came in the bottom of the seventh on another sac fly by Harrison.

Owens (9-6) earned the victory Wednesday, retiring the final 17 batters he faced following the first inning home run by Kipnis. Kluber (0-1) took the loss in permitting four runs (three earned) on eight hits with five walks against four strikeouts in his four innings pitched. The Indians acquired the right-hander from the San Diego Padres in last week’s Jake Westbrook trade while Tom Boleska recorded his second with three shutout frames.

Kipnis finished the night 2-for-4 with his 13th home run combined between Class A Kinston and Akron this year as well as a seventh inning triple. Henry’s 10-game hitting streak ended and it was just the second time this season the Aeros collected less than three hits.

Myrtle Beach Beats Kinston 5-1

A brilliant performance by starter Matt Crim and a five-run eighth inning by Myrtle Beach pushed the Pelicans to a 5-1 rubber game victory over Kinston on Wednesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium.

Early on in the game, pitching was dominating much like it did in Kinston's 1-0 win in game two on Tuesday night. The pitcher's duel featured T.J. House pitching 4 1/3 perfect innings before surrendering a double to Gerry Rodriguez in the fifth inning. House shut out the Pelicans for seven innings but came away with a no-decision. He allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out three. House has been outstanding in his last three starts, surrendering just one run on six hits in 19 innings of work, good for an ERA of 0.47.

The Pelicans broke up the tie with a big top of the eighth against K-Tribe reliever Tyler Sturdevant. L.V. Ware walked with one out and Mycal Jones singled to left to send Ware to third. Jordan Kreke then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Ware and give the Pelicans a 1-0 lead. The next batter, Dan Nelson ripped an RBI single to left. After a walk to Mike Jones, Rodriguez pulled an RBI double down the left field line to make it 3-0. Matt Langwell came on in relief but gave up a two-run single to Cole Miles, extending the lead to 5-0.

Myrtle Beach lefty Matt Crim pitched 8 2/3 innings, limiting Kinston to a run on five hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Crim threw 107 pitches and was relieved by Angelo Paulino with two on and two out in the ninth.

Captains Slay Dragons 8-2

For the second night in a row the Lake County Captains rallied from behind and used a big inning to help the cause as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 8-2 on Wednesday. The Captains have taken the first two games of the series.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Mark Fleury hit his ninth home run of the year. The Captains took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jason Smit double and moved to third on a ground out. Delvi Cid doubled home Smit. After Argenis Martinez singled, Casey Frawley grounded out scoring Cid from third and the Captains led 2-1. The Captains added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Roberto Perez led off the inning with the triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Greg Folgia and the lead was 3-1.

The Dragons scored a run in the top of the eighth inning when Kevyn Feiner led off the inning with a double. He went to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Oliveros and it was 3-2. The Captains added five unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth inning aided by two Dragons errors and highlighted by a Martinez three RBI double and the Captains blew it open making it 8-2.

Captains starter Brett Brach (2-5) got the win pitching seven innings and allowing one run on seven hits while striking out four. Brach has allowed only two runs over his last 23 innings of work. Ramon Cespedes made his Captains debut and went two innings allowing one run on two hits walking one and striking out one to pick up his first save.

Dayton starter Blair Carson (3-5) took the loss working five innings allowing two runs on five hits, walking three while striking out two.

Where's Weglarz been? He hasn't played in a week, but he's not on the DL?

Weglarz has a sprained ligament in thumb. Was supposed to play today but got scratched and is heading to Cleveland for evaluation. With Carrera set to be activated on Thursday, it is a safe bet Wegz hits the DL.
