Game Recap 8/16: Folgia Delivers Captains Win

Folgia’s Fifth Hit Lifts Captains Walk Off Win

Greg Folgia’s career high fifth hit of the game in the bottom the eleventh inning scored Delvi Cid for an 11-10 walk off win over Dayton on Monday night. It was the first time two Lake County players had more than four hits in the same game with Folgia going 5-for-7 and Jason Smit finishing 4-for-6 and three runs batted in.

Aaron Laffey started the game for the Captains in a one inning rehab appearance Monday night. Laffey faced four hitters, throwing fifth teen pitches, twelve of them for strikes as he struck out three. Didi Gregorius picked up the lone hit off Laffey.

The Captains drummed up a two out rally in the bottom of the first inning. Greg Folgia and Adam Abraham both singled to leftfield off Dayton starter Jacob Johnson. Chris Kersten was hit in the back by a pitch, loading the bases. A wild pitch by Johnson scored Folgia for a Captains 1-0 lead. Jason Smit connected for a double down the line in left to drive in two runs and Lake County was up 3-0.

Trey Haley entered in relief for Laffey and got knocked around in the third inning. Frank Pfister singled up the middle to get aboard. Kevyn Feiner laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a fielder’s choice as Haley’s throw to second was trying to get the lead runner. Justin Reed chopped a ground ball into right field loading the bases. Pfister scored on a Haley wild pitch making it 3-1. Ryan LaMarre jumped on a Haley pitch sending it over the wall in leftfield driving in three and giving the Dragons a 4-3 lead.

Lake County tied things up in the bottom half of the third inning. Folgia started off the frame with a base hit to right. Abraham grounded out to third moving the runner over. Kersten drew a walk off a Johnson putting runners on first and second. Smit drove in his third run of the game with a base hit left scoring Folgia making it 4-4.

In the fourth inning, the Dragons regained the lead at 5-4. Cameron Satterwhite singled and reached second base on a Haley wild pitch. With one out, Pfister singled up the middle to score Satterwhite.

Dayton’s Henry Rodriguez walked with out in the fifth. LaMarre walked putting two on. Satterwhite drove in a run with a single to right to make it 6-4.

Jason Smit leadoff the bottom of the fifth inning with his third hit of the game a double down the leftfield line. Kyle Smith doubled to right center driving in Smit cutting the deficit to one. Dwight Childs grounded out to first to push Smith over to third. Dragons’s reliever and native of Painesville, OH Jamie Walczak’s wild pitch scored Smith to tie the game at 6-6.

In the sixth, with two outs Smit collected his fourth hit of the game with a single up the middle. Smith stole second base his eighth stolen base of the season. Kyle Smith singled to right field scoring Smit, giving the Captains a 7-6 advantage.

Dayton’s Gregorius began the seventh inning with a walk off Captains’ reliever Jeremy Johnson. Rodriguez reached on an error by second baseman Kyle Smith putting runners on the corners. LaMarre hit into a double play which allowed Gregorius to score and tie the game 7-7.

Lake County took the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Chris Kersten hit his tenth homerun of the year, a solo shot giving the Captains an 8-7 lead.

Jose Flores entered the game for Lake County in the ninth for a save opportunity. After striking out Feiner to begin the inning, Justin Reed doubled to left center. A balk by Flores would push Reed to third. Gregorius drove in the tying run with a base hit. Henry Rodriguez singled to put runners on the corners for the Dragons. LaMarre singles driving in Gregorius giving Dayton a 9-8 lead and runners on first and third. A double steal allowed as Rodriguez stole home and LaMarre into second giving the Dragons a 10-8 edge.

The Captains did not quit entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Tyler Holt pinch hitting singled to right to reach leading off. Cid singled to leftfield putting runners on first and third. Argenis Martinez picked up his only hit of the night punching one into left driving in Holt to make it 10-9 and extending his hit streak to a team high 14 straight games. Greg Folgia singled to right field and the Dragons’ Alex Oliveras missed played the bounce allowing Cid to score to tie the game at 10-10.

Francisco Jimenez (7-1) picked up the win pitching 2.1 innings with no runs on two hits, striking out three. Junior Martinez (1-4) suffered the loss with 1.2 innings giving up a run on two hits and walk. Haley picked up a no-decision giving up six runs on six hits five innings or work. Lake County and Dayton combined to use eleven pitchers on Monday night.

After an off day on Tuesday, the Captains will welcome the Bowling Green Hot Rods, an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, to Classic Park for a three game series. The Captains will have RHP Clayton Cook (6-7, 3.40) on the mound against the Hot Rods RHP Kyle Lobstein (7-6, 4.43).

Gardner Grabs 10th Win, Kinston Wins 2-1

The K-Tribe scored two runs in the fourth inning and used strong pitching on their way to a 2-1 win over Potomac on the first night of a four night homestand Monday in Kinston. Kinston starter Joe Gardner racked up his tenth win of the season, tying teammate T.J. McFarland for the most wins in the Carolina League this season.

Potomac got to Kinston starter Joe Gardner early. Gardner walked two and hit one batter in the opening frame, as Potomac took advantage with an RBI single from Sean Rooney. Gardner would get in and out of trouble, allowing just one more hit over the next five innings, while walking two and hitting two more batters. Gardner pitched five innings, giving up a run on two hits. He walked four and struck out five.

The K-Tribe bats would pick Gardner up in the top of the fourth inning. Karexon Sanchez led off with a walk. Jeremie Tice then got Kinston on the scoreboard with an RBI triple. Chun Chen would then give Kinston a 2-1 lead with an RBI single, scoring Tice. Potomac starter Adrian Alaniz allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

The K-Tribe bullpen did the rest as Travis Turek, Matt Langwell and Cory Burns combined to throw four innings of one hit ball. Burns struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning for his Carolina League leading 23rd save of the season. Langwell bagged his CL leading 13th hold.

The K-Tribe plays a double header starting at 6pm Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Tuesday is $2 Tuesday, with tickets, drinks and food just two dollars....that's just 14 cents an inning! Austin Adams will start game one, Marty Popham gets the ball for game two.
