Aeros ace Alex White struggled again Sunday as the New Britain Rock Cats salvaged a win to end this three-game series with a dominant 11-3 victory. White permitted seven runs in five plus innings on the day as the hosts provided plenty of run support in front of another impressive crowd of 5,426 fans at New Britain Stadium. The last-place Rock Cats of the Eastern Division improved to 34-81, and with the loss, the Aeros finished 2-5 on this weeklong road trip and now have a 58-55 record on the season.
White avoided damage through the first two frames before his offense took the lead in the third. A sacrifice bunt from Akron center fielder Jordan Henry advanced Miguel Perez and Lucas Montero advanced runners to third and second base, respectively. Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly to left.
The Rock Cats responded swiftly as Joe Benson belted a solo one-out homer in the bottom of the third to tie the score at 1-1. After a walk and a double, Erik Lis hit a home run for the second straight night, this blast coming in the three-run variety.
Back-to-back doubles from designated hitter Tim Fedroff and Perez cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fourth before White cruised through another two more innings. The Aeros added another score in the top of the sixth as right fielder John Drennen led off with a homer.
New Britain then rallied in the sixth, starting the frame with a single, an RBI double and a walk before Connor Graham entered the game in relief. He promptly permitted three more runs, two via run-scoring groundouts, and the blowout continued in the seventh inning. New reliever Bryan Price allowed a solo homer to Juan Portes as a wild pitch and another groundout provided for the final margin of the night.
Kyle Gibson (7-5) earned the victory for the Rock Cats in scattering three runs on seven hits through his 5.2 innings pitched. White (6-6) failed to survive the sixth frame, permitting eight hits, two walks and two home runs in his worst Double-A start of the season. The 21-year-old has now allowed at least four runs in each of his past three outings (7.04 ERA).
Akron finished with nine hits in the game, led by an impressive outing from the bottom half of the lineup. Drennen was 2-for-4 with his fifth homer of the season while the final three batters, Fedroff, Perez and Montero, all collected two hits as well.
The Aeros thankfully return home to Ohio tonight and will begin another weeklong home stand, the longest remaining of the season, Tuesday night against the Reading Phillies. It is a Two for Tuesday at Canal Park starting at 7:05 p.m. and fans can enjoy buy one, get one free specials on tickets, hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn and soft drinks.
Recently acquired right-hander Corey Kluber (0-1, 6.75 ERA) will make his second start for the Aeros against Reading lefty Yohan Flande (7-7, 4.49 ERA).
Buffalo Sweeps Columbus
Deuces were wild at Coca-Cola Field on Sunday afternoon, as the Columbus Clippers were swept by the Buffalo Bisons, 6-3. The Bisons scored two runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings while Columbus got on the board first with two in the second.
The Clippers led off the scoring when Jerad Head drove home Wes Hodges on a double to left field. For Head, it was his fifth double of the year. Two batters later, Argenis Reyes drove home the newest Clipper, Drew Sutton on a single to left.
The Bisons didn't wait long to tie the game as Mike Cervenak homered for the fifth time off of starter, Paolo Espino. Later in the inning, Justin Turner continued his productive series with an RBI double to right.
The Bisons would plate two more runs in the fifth thanks to Russ Adams' ninth long ball of 2010. Buffalo chased Espino before completing the sixth inning, as Espino gave up four earned runs on six hits while striking out two and walking three.
Buffalo continued to score in pairs in the seventh inning and managed to hold off Columbus in the ninth inning, winning the season series, 6-2. Columbus out-hit Buffalo again for the third game in the series, but were outscored by Buffalo in the sweep, 30-14.
The Clippers leave Buffalo with a sour taste in their mouth as they travel to Syracuse to begin a four game series with the Chiefs beginning tomorrow at 7:00 p.m.
Kinston Falls to Lynchburg 8-3
Kyle Day's first inning grand slam jump-started Lynchburg in an 8-3 win over Kinston on Sunday at Grainger Stadium. The Hillcats took three out of four in the series.
Lynchburg jumped on top with a big first inning against K-Tribe starter Joey Mahalic. With one out, Mahalic walked three straight hitters to load the bases for Kyle Day. Day then hit a grand slam to right field to put the Hillcats ahead 4-0. Mahalic walked five batters in the opening frame. Mahalic (4-7) took the loss giving up four runs on three hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked eight and struck out one. The eight walks were a season high.
Lynchburg lefty starter Justin Walker (1-0) shutout the Indians on four hits in five innings. He struck out six.
The score remained 4-0 until the sixth inning, when Kinston got on the board against Lynchburg reliever Daniel Guerrero. Abner Abreu reached on a fielder's choice and Chun Chen drove a ground rule double to right field. Kyle Bellows hit an RBI groundout and Juan Diaz followed with an RBI single to left to pull the Indians within 4-2.
The Hillcats responded in the seventh inning off of Indians reliever Travis Turek. Lynchburg started the inning with five straight hits, including RBI singles by Shane Carlson and Kevin Coddington. Brodie Greene had the sixth and final hit of the inning, a single to left to give the Hillcats an 8-2 edge. The six hits matched a season high for hits allowed by the Indians in an inning.
The K-Tribe scored a run in the eighth after a leadoff double by Donnie Webb. A groundout moved him to third and he scored on Guerrero's wild pitch to cut the lead to 8-3. Kinston relievers David Roberts and Cory Burns each pitched scoreless innings for Kinston.
Kinston hits the road for a seven game roadtrip starting on Monday. The K-Tribe plays a four game series at Salem starting Monday night at 7:05. T.J. House will get the start for Kinston. The Indians return home for their second to last homestand of the year on August 16th.
Captains Lose Third Straight, 5-2 to Hawks
David Nick hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth giving South Bend a 3-0 lead, it was his third hit of the afternoon and proved to be the game winner. The Silver Hawks sent the Captains to their third straight loss 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Leftfielder Andrew Fie hit a 2-1 pitch off Vidal Nuno in the second inning to give South Bend a 1-0 lead.
David Nick singled to right in third inning with two outs. Nuno threw over to first but over Chris Kersten’s head to the right field corner. Nick came around and scored from first on the Nuno error to make 2-0 Silver Hawks.
South Bend got a leadoff single by Ramon Castillo in the seventh. David Narodowski hit his third homerun of the year to left center pushing the lead out to 5-0.
The Captains snapped a 25 inning scoreless drought in the eighth inning. Argenis Martinez walked to start things off. Trent Baker singled to left to reach. Casey Frawley also picked up a walk loading the bases. Adam Abraham 24 game on-base streak was snapped, but he did drive in Martinez with a ground out to short. Kersten drove in Baker with an RBI single to right to make it 5-2.
Scottie Allen (4-4) picked up the win with seven scoreless innings allowing just two hits and striking out five. Vidal Nuno (5-5) suffered the loss giving up three runs, two earned on four hits in six innings, striking out a season eight. Kevin Munson picked up his second save of the year pitching the ninth for the Silver Hawks.
Lake County and South Bend continue their series on Monday night from Coveleski Stadium at 7:00PM. The Captains will start RHP Brett Brach (3-6) against RHP Adam Worthington (3-3) for the Silver Hawks.
Scrappers fall to IronBirds, 8-7
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost game two of a three-game series with the Aberdeen IronBirds Sunday night 8-7 at Eastwood Field. The IronBirds scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead capped off by an Austin Knight game winning three-RBI double. J.D. Goryl allowed that double and suffered the loss. T.R Keating picked up the win for the IronBirds working two scoreless innings of relief.
Despite the loss, Owen Dew continued to pitch well lasting five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out three. Shortstop Nick Bartolone, who was the Indians 6th round pick this year, went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI in his Scrappers debut.
The Scrappers and IronBirds will play the rubber match of this three-game series Monday afternoon. Mitch Talbot will make the start for the Scrappers as he begins his rehab stint for the Cleveland Indians. First pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
