Game Recap 8/19: Head Leads The Charge

Aeros Win Wild One Over R-Phils 15-10

A seven-run eighth inning rally highlighted a 15-10 victory for the Aeros as they avoided a sweep by the Reading Phillies Thursday night. Every Aeros player scored as the team improved to 64-59, while Reading dropped to 59-63. The R-Phils led by as many as five runs before Akron scored 13 runs in the fifth through the eighth inning to secure the win. The Aeros’ 15 runs set a season-high record for most runs in a game.

Right fielder Jerad Head started the high-scoring affair with a two-run home run in the opening frame to extend his hit streak to 17 games. But the lead didn’t last long as Tagg Bozied doubled in two runs in the bottom of the inning. Reading then took control in the third inning with a five-run frame to push its lead to 7-2.

But Akron’s offense came alive in the fifth when third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall doubled in two runs of his own. Head followed with his second two-run round tripper to pull the Aeros within a run, 7-6, marking his fourth home run in three days.

The Aeros regained the lead, albeit shortly, with shortstop Carlos Rivero’s home run and center fielder Jordan Henry’s RBI single that scored catcher Miguel Perez. However, Reading came back with two runs to equalize the inning. The hosts added another run in the seventh to make the score 10-8.

The bats remained hot for Akron in the eighth, as they scored seven runs for the fifth time in an inning this season. Henry lit up the scoreboard first with a two-RBI single that scored left fielder Tim Fedroff and designated hitter Lucas Montero. Henry advanced to third on a fielding error during the play. A Chisenhall single scored Henry while moving second baseman Jason Kipnis, who reached on a walk, to second. Head and first baseman Beau Mills both walked to score Kipnis. The final blow came on Rivero’s bases-clearing double to cap his four RBI night.

Bryan Price earned the win for the Aeros and improved to 6-3. The right-handed reliever allowed one run on three hits and struck out one over two innings. The Phillies’ Matt German (1-2) took the loss with his fourth blown save of the year.

With Bowie and Harrisburg both losing Thursday night, Akron now stands equally with the Senators, just one game back of the Baysox for the Western Division wild card. On Friday, the Aeros return to Canal Park for another Fireworks Friday, this one sponsored by Pizza Hut. Alex White (7-6, 2.39 ERA) will head to the mound for the Aeros to take on Harrisburg’s Tanner Roark (1-1, 2.25) in arguably Akron’s most important series so far this season.

Clippers rally, but fall in ninth, 9-5

The Clippers erased Scranton/Wilkes-Barre leads three different times Thursday night at Huntington Park, only to come up short in the ninth, falling 9-5.

Brandon Laird's double in the top of the ninth scored Juan Miranda with the winning run. A Chad Huffman three-run home run against Bryce Stowell (1-1) added some insurance, preventing the Clippers from a fourth comeback effort.

A walk, a single and a double helped the Yankees to two runs against Columbus starter Eric Berger in the first. Columbus responded with two runs of their own in the second, loading the bases with no outs and later catching a break, when what looked to be an inning-ending double-play off the bat of Damaso Espino was thwarted by a bad relay from Eric Bruntlett, allowing both Jared Goedert and Drew Sutton to score.

The teams exchanged runs in the third, with the Yankees scoring a two-out run when Colin Curtis doubled and was singled home by Huffman. The Clippers had a couple of hits of their own in the bottom half of the frame, with the second single, off the bat of Wes Hodges, scoring Cord Phelps, who had reached on a walk.

Berger gave up a pair of runs in the fourth, in what would be his last inning of work. Only one of the fourth inning runs were earned, however, as a Goedert throwing error aided Scranton. Yet again, the Clippers responded and came back to tie the game, this time in the sixth inning with a Matt McBride two-run blast to left field.

It all just ended up setting the stage for the big Yankee ninth inning. Romulo Sanchez (9-8), who worked the seventh and eighth innings for the visitors, earned the win.

The Clippers and Yankees will finish up their season series at Huntington Park Friday night at 7:05. RHP Yohan Pino (9-7, 5.37) will throw for Columbus against RHP Lance Pendleton (0-0, 8.10).

Kinston travels to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for a short weekend road series starting Friday at 7:05 pm. The K-Tribe will return to Historic Grainger Stadium Monday for their final homestand of the season.

Captains Edge Rods 5-4, on Folgia's Walk Off Homerun

Down by one, and down to their final out, Greg Folgia played hero for the second time this week. Folgia connected for a two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning on Thursday afternoon lifting the Captains to a 5-4 win over the Hot Rods.

Bowling Green got on the board in the top of the first inning. Tyler Bortnick drew a leadoff walk to begin the game. Brett Nommensen hit his tenth homerun of the year, a two run shot off Captains’ starter Brett Brach giving the Hot Rods the lead 2-0.

Adam Abraham led off the second inning with a base hit, extending his hit streak to eight straight games. With one out, Roberto Perez walked putting runners on first and second. Greg Folgia tried to spin out of the way of a fastball up and in and was sent to the ground on a ball that went off the knob of the bat into play. The runners both advanced into scoring position as Folgia was thrown out. Jason Smit stepped in and saw a wild pitch that allowed Abraham to score from third making it 2-1.

Adam Abraham tied the game up at 2-2 in the fourth inning, with a solo homerun to right field, it was his eleventh of the season.

The Hot Rods added some insurance in the eighth inning. A double kicked things off by Tomas Francisco. A sacrifice bunt by Dustin Biell pushed Francisco to third. Ty Morrison made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Lake County rallied in the bottom of the ninth; Casey Frawley reached on a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Chris Kersten singled to center to put runners on the corners. Roberto Perez made the score 4-3 with a sacrifice fly to right.

Captains’ reliever Ramon Cespedes (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect ninth inning. Tyree Hayes (4-1) suffered the loss giving up three runs on five hits in five innings of action. Lake County’s starter Brett Brach was solid again tossing six innings giving up two runs on two hits striking out four.

The Captains and Hotrods wrap up the series on Friday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending RHP Jason Knapp (0-0, 0.00) to the hill to face the Hotrods RHP Wilking Rodriguez (4-9, 4.44).

Scrappers rally late but fall to Muckdogs, 7-5

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rallied and loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but came up just short as the Batavia Muckdogs won game two of this three game series 7-5 tonight at Eastwood Field.
The Scrappers fell to 25-34 on the season, while the Muckdogs improved to 32-25.

Michael Goodnight picked up the loss for the Scrappers lasting just 2.2 innings, giving up six runs on five hits and striking out three.

John Gast picked up his fourth win of the season for the Muckdogs pitching five innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out five.

Keith Butler gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but got of trouble to record his third save of the season for Batavia.

The Scrappers were led offensively by Diego Seastrunk who went 4-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored.

The Muckdogs erupted in the top of third inning to break a scoreless tie scoring six runs off Goodnight. The six-run third proved to be the difference as the Muckdogs never trailed.

Batavia added a run in the top of the fifth inning on a Victor Sanchez RBI double that chased home Adam Melker and made the score 7-0.

The Scrappers answered in the bottom of the frame when Chase Burnette doubled to lead off the inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He later scored on a Seastrunk double. The Scrappers scored two more times in the inning to cut the lead to 7-3.

Mahoning Valley continued to chip away in the bottom of the eighth inning as Nick Bartolone doubled off reliever Chase Reid to score Tyler Cannon and make it 7-4.

Reid was replaced by Keith Butler in the bottom of ninth inning. After getting Burnette to pop out to start the inning, Butler allowed a single to Seastrunk and the Scrappers had a runner. Kevin Rucker later walked with two out to put runners on first and second.

Cannon came up next and singled to chase home Seastrunk and cut the Batavia lead to two at 7-5. After a pinch hit Brian Heere single, the bases were loaded for the top of the order and Carlos Moncrief, but Butler got him to strike swinging to end the threat and give the Muckdogs the win.

The Scrappers and Muckdogs will play the rubber match of this three-game series tomorrow night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
