Game Recap 8/10: Soto Terrific Again

Captains Win 4-3 in the Ninth

Casey Frawley’s RBI triple that scored Delvi Cid in the ninth inning lifted Lake County ahead of South Bend for a 4-3 win on Tuesday night. The Captains picked up their second straight win over the Silver Hawks.

Lake County jumped out in front of South Bend in the second inning. Kyle Smith reached on a leadoff walk by Diogenis Rosario. Chris Kersten crushed a ball to deep leftfield for his seventh homerun of the season giving the Captains a 2-0 lead.

Giovanni Soto retired the first thirteen batters he faced till Ramon Castillo in the fifth inning connected for a solo homerun to cut the lead in half at 2-1.

In the seventh inning, Soto gave up a leadoff base hit to David Nick. Bobby Borchering walked to put on a pair of base runners. Matt Davidson hit into a double play but advanced Nick to third base. Ramon Castillo continued to haunt the Captains pitching staff taking an 0-2 pitch to right to score Nick and tie the game at two.

Lake County’s Frawley leadoff off the eighth inning with a base hit. Adam Abraham drew a walk off of Hawk’s pitcher Chris Odegaard. Ordegaard loaded the bases when he hit Kersten in the back with a pitch. Roberto Perez hit a slow roller to short to ground out but scored Frawley for a 3-2 lead.

Preston Guilmet could not hold on to the win for Soto in the bottom of the eighth inning. Tyson Van Winkle singled to get things started for South Bend. Victor Estevez executed a sacrifice bunt to push the runner into scoring position. Ender Inciarte doubled down the leftfield line to tie the game up at three.

Giovanni Soto pitched seven strong innings for Lake County giving up two runs on three hits while striking out nine for a no-decision. Guilmet (3-1) picked up the win pitching two innings giving up a run on two hits, striking out three. Odegaard (5-1) suffered his first loss of the year giving up two runs in two innings on two base hits while walking a pair.

Lake County continues their seven game road trip with a three game series in Fort Wayne on Wednesday night at 7:00PM. The Captains start RHP Trey Haley (5-7) in the opener against the TinCaps RHP Jerry Sullivan (7-4).

Clippers earn split with Chiefs

The Clippers both added to their losing streak and stopped it on Tuesday night in Syracuse, falling 1-0 in the make-up game from Monday's rainout before taking the nightcap, 6-3. The win stopped a five-game streak in the wrong direction and an eight-game road losing streak.

In game one, Leonard Davis' solo shot in the third inning accounted for all the scoring. Yohan Pino was solid for Columbus, overcoming a dizzy spell in the second inning and scattering three hits and a walk while striking out four in a complete-game, six-inning effort.

Five pitchers combined for the seven-inning, four-hit shutout for Syracuse. Only twice in the game did the Clippers get a runner into scoring position.

The offense woke up a bit in game two, however, as Columbus got on the board twice in the second inning and three more times in the third to erase an early deficit. Jerad Head homered in the second, followed two batters later by a Jose Constanza RBI-triple. The Clippers got a solo blast from Jared Goedert in the third, followed later by an RBI-double from Drew Sutton and a sacrifice fly from Head.

With a 5-3 lead, Wes Hodges doubled home Goedert in the fourth inning, and the Clippers bullpen did the rest in relief of Jeremy Sowers. Single scoreless innings from Bryce Stowell, Jess Todd, Josh Judy and Vinnie Pestano got the job done and salvaged the split.

Stowell picked up the win, his first at the Triple-A level, while Pestano earned his 10th save of the season.

Game three of the four-game set in Syracuse gets started at 7:05 on Wednesday night. Columbus' Eric Berger (0-0, 2.87) will get the call against Erik Arnesen (3-7, 4.08).

Aeros Struggle Again, Lose 11-0 to Reading

The Aeros lost for the eighth time in 10 games Tuesday night at Canal Park, suffering their largest margin of defeat this season by the final score of 11-0 against the Reading Phillies. Right-hander Corey Kluber surrendered six runs on 11 hits in just four innings in his first home start while the Phillies collected 18 hits on the night against the five Akron pitchers. Despite the loss, Akron (58-56) remains 4.5 games behind the Western Division wild card race and the R-Phils improved to 56-58.

Center fielder Jordan Henry and second baseman Jason Kipnis each singled to start the first, but the Aeros then struggled offensively against Reading lefty starter Yohan Flande. Kluber avoided damage in the first two frames before a rally in the third that featured four runs on five hits highlighted by a two-run double from Timo Perez.

The blowout continued in the fourth as Harold Garcia extended the lead to 6-0 with a one-out, two-run single to center. Left-handed reliever Nick Hagadone replaced Kluber in the fifth but allowed another run on Keoni De Renne’s RBI double.

The Phillies provided for the final margin of the night with another four-run rally against relief pitcher Steven Wright in the top of the seventh. Flande retired 15 of his final 16 batters and the Aeros finally rallied but stranded a pair of runners to end the ninth.

Flande (8-7) earned the victory in his seven scoreless frames, allowing just three hits and two walks in one of his finest starts of the year. Kluber (0-2) faltered again in his second Eastern League outing, striking out five with one walk in the game. Akron’s bullpen fared no better, allowing the next five runs on seven hits with four hits in the final five frames.

New catcher Juan Apodaca was the only Aeros batter to reach base twice as he finished with a single and a walk. Left fielder Jesus Montero also doubled but the team has now failed to score four runs in eight of the nine games played in August.

This three-game series continues Wednesday night for “Paws and Pitches” Pet Night at Canal Park sponsored by Camp Bow Wow of Cuyahoga Falls. The game begins at 7:05 p.m. with proceeds from the event benefitting the Humane Society of Greater Akron and the Summit County Animal Coalition. Fans can bring all the members of the family for the fun in downtown Akron with a special offer of a $48 Family Pack including four tickets, four hot dogs, four soft drinks and four bags of chips, a savings of $28!

Cleveland Indians starter Anthony Reyes is expected to resume his rehab assignment tomorrow with the Aeros against Reading’s J.C. Ramirez (3-3, 4.76 ERA).
