Game Recap 8/20: Frawley's Homer Is Deciding Blow

Frawley’s Homerun Lifts Captains

Casey Frawley hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning giving the Captains a 4-3. Lake County defeated Bowling Green 5-3 taking the series two games to one.

The Hot Rods scored first in the fifth inning to make it 1-0. Bowling Green loaded the bases on collecting three hits and a fielder’s choice. Tyler Bortnick was hit by a Vidal Nuno pitch that scored Tomas Francisco.

The Captains Tyler Holt drew a one out walk in the bottom of the fifth inning to reach base. Hot Rods’ reliever Merrill Kelly hit Delvi Cid and Casey Frawley with pitches to load the bases. Adam Abraham cleared the bases crushing a double to deep centerfield putting Lake County in front 3-1.

The Hot Rods pulled within one in the sixth inning against Captains’ reliever Francisco Jimenez. Mark Thomas ripped a one out double down the line in left. A ground out by Julio Cedeno pushed Thomas to third. Tomas Francisco drew a walk to putting runners on the corners. Robi Estrada hit a ball deep in the hole at short and beat out the throw by Casey Frawley scoring Thomas.

Bowling Green evened things up at three in the seventh inning. Ty Morrison singled up the middle to get on and stole second base to getting in scoring position. Ryan Wiegand hit a ground rule double down the left field line scoring Morrison. Mark Thomas singled to center, Delvi Cid charged in scooping up the baseball. Wiegand being waved home representing the go ahead run was thrown out at the plate by Cid.

In the ninth the Captains add some insurance as Jason Smit reached on a fielder’s choice that retired Greg Folgia who walked. Argenis Martinez reached on a walk by Scott Shuman. Delvi Cid drove in Smit with an RBI single to left center giving Lake County a 5-3 edge.

Francisco Jimenez (8-1) picked up the win despite giving up two runs on five hits, walking one and striking out three. Scott Shuman (4-5) took the loss giving up two runs on two hits, walking three and striking out four. Jose Flores picked up the save his fifth of the season working two scoreless frames, giving up two hits and walking one. Lake County starter Jason Knapp was fantastic in his return to Eastlake after surgery in 2009. Knapp tossed four scoreless innings not allowing a hit, walking only two and striking out seven.

Lake County will head to Dayton to start a four game series on Saturday night at 7:00PM at Fifth Third Field. The Captains will hand the ball to LHP Giovanni Soto (9-6) to start game one, he’ll be matched up against RHP Ricky Bowen (2-8) for the Dragons.

Aeros Fall to Harrisburg 5-1

The Aeros lost 5-1 in the first game of an important three-game series with the Harrisburg Senators Friday in front of 5,761 fans at Canal Park. The defeat drops Akron to 64-60 while the Sens improve to 65-59. The two teams are in the thick of the Western Division wild card race and were tied for third place, one game behind Bowie evening’s action.

Harrisburg scored first in the top of the fourth inning when Josh Johnson tripled and Jesus Valdez singled him home. The Senators added two more runs in the fifth when first baseman Miguel Perez made a throwing error to the plate in an attempt to force out Jhonathan Solano. Brad Coon also came around to score, pushing Harrisburg’s lead to three unanswered runs.

Akron answered when left fielder Tim Fedroff ended a potential no-hit bid with a solo home run to center field in the fifth. The Sens added another run in the sixth when Coon recorded an RBI-single that brought home Michael Burgess. Harrisburg tacked on an insurance run in the ninth for the final four-run difference.

Right-handed starter Alex White (7-7, 2.44 ERA) took the loss in allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks. The Senators’ Ryan Tatusko earned his first win of the season, giving up just one run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings. Cole Kimball came on in the ninth to earn his sixth save.

K-Tribe Rallies to Beat Pelicans 6-4

Kinston rallied for five runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 6-4 comeback win on Friday night in Myrtle Beach. The K-Tribe is now just a half game behind Salem for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division with 17 games to play.

The Pelicans scored an unearned run in the second inning to go in front. Cody Johnson walked and Karexon Sanchez committed a two-base throwing error on a grounder by Samuel Sime to move Johnson to third. He scored on a double play grounder by Matt Kennelly to make it 1-0.

Johnson hit a solo homer to left to lead off the fourth inning and put the Pelicans ahead 2-0. In the sixth, Kennelly's RBI double made it a 3-0 lead.

The Indians rallied in a wild seventh inning. Jeremie Tice walked to start the inning and Chun Chen and Kyle Bellows followed with back-to-back singles. Bellows' hit then went through the legs of right fielder Gerry Rodriguez, allowing Tice to score on the error. Abner Abreu then hit a two-run double to right center to tie the game at three. With the bases loaded and one out, Bo Greenwell sent a potential double play grounder to second. However, Jordan Kreke made a fielding error and Abreu scored to give the K-Tribe the lead. Sanchez then drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-3.

Myrtle Beach scored a run in the bottom of the inning on Mike Jones' RBI grounder to pull to within 5-4. With the bases loaded and two out, Matt Langwell came on in relief and struck out Samuel Sime to keep the K-Tribe in front.

Kinston added a run in the eighth on a Juan Diaz double and Doug Pickens RBI single to make it 6-4.

Langwell pitched a perfect eighth and earned his league-leading 14th hold. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 13 1/3 innings pitched.

Cory Burns threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his league-best 25th save. He is now 37-for-39 this season in save situations combined this season, third best in all of MiLB. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 11 innings.

Joey Mahalic (5-8) picked up the win for Kinston, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits in six frames. He walked four and struck out five.

Angelo Paulino took the loss for the Pelicans, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings. Starter Cory Rasmus took a no-decision despite shutting out the Indians on three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The three-game series continues tomorrow night on the Grand Strand at 7:05. Southpaw T.J. House will start for Kinston.

Scrappers fall to Muckdogs, 6-4

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost game three of a three-game series to the Batavia Muckdogs 6-4 tonight at Eastwood Field. With the loss, the Scrappers are 25-35 on the season, while the Muckdogs improve to 33-25.

The Muckdogs scored one run in the top of the second inning and five runs in the top of the third inning to knock Alex Kaminsky out of the game and win the rubber match.

Kaminsky picked up his fourth loss of the season as he couldn't get out of the third lasting just 2.2 innings.

Houston Summers pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings to earn the win for the Muckdogs. Keith Butler recorded the save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Chase Burnette went 1-5 with a RBI to extend his hitting streak to 11 games tying him with Jordan Casas for the longest streak this season. With a hit in his next game, Burnette will move into sole possession of the longest hitting streak for a Scrapper in 2010.

The Scrappers got things started offensively tonight in the bottom of the first inning on a Burnette single that scored Nick Bartolone to make it 1-0.

The Muckdogs answered quickly in the top of the second inning as Jon Rodriguez hit a solo home run off of Kaminsky to tie the game.

The Muckdogs erupted an inning later scoring five runs off Kaminsky as he exited with just two out in the frame.

The Scrappers grabbed three runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning off of Batavia starter Nick McCully. Aaron Fields tripled home two runs to cut the deficit to 6-3. Moncrief followed with a RBI single to score Fields and make it 6-4.

The Scrappers trailed by just two, but the Batavia bullpen did its job as four Muckdog relievers held the Scrappers scoreless from the fifth inning on.

The Scrappers will look to get back on track as they head on the road tomorrow to open a three-game series against the State College Spikes. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
