Game Recap 8/23: McBride Provides Walkoff Game Winner

Clippers end losing streak with walk-off, infield hit

When in the midst of a season-long losing streak, you'll take a win anyway you can get it. For the Clippers Monday night, that meant a walk-off win in which the ball never had to leave the infield in the ninth. Matt McBride's infield single to short earned Columbus a .500 record on their 10-game homestand, as they topped Toledo, 4-3.

Drew Sutton hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Columbus their first lead of the series. He added an RBI-single in the fifth, bringing home Argenis Reyes (who doubled to lead off the inning and was bunted to third by Ezequiel Carrera).

Much like Carlos Carrasco yesterday, David Huff coasted into the sixth inning. And much like Carrasco, Huff found trouble in a hurry, giving up hits to the first three batters of the inning. Scott Sizemore's single scored Justin Henry, and then Cale Iorg scored on a double-play grounder, which tied the score at two.

Columbus jumped back into the lead in the bottom half of that same inning, when Wes Hodges hit a solo shot. But again, the lead wouldn't last, as Robinzon Diaz came around to score in the top of the seventh, leading off the inning with a double and later scoring on a Huff wild pitch.

The game stayed tied at three until the ninth, when the home team loaded the bases with one out, thanks to a walk, a throwing error by reliever Robbie Weinhardt and an infield single. Sutton hit a fly ball to left that wasn't quite deep enough to score the runner, Luke Carlin, from third - setting the stage for McBride's game-winning hit. The shortstop, Iorg, got to the ball, and tried to beat Carrera to second then tried to throw out McBride. When he failed at both, the Clippers had ended a five-game losing streak, much to the delight of more than 11,000 fans on the final "Dime-a-Dog" night of 2010.

Josh Judy (3-0) earned the win in relief for Columbus. The victory allowed the Clippers to keep pace with the Louisville Bats, who got a come-from-behind win over Indianapolis, and maintain a half-game lead in the International League's West Division.

The Clippers and Mud Hens resume their five-game set tomorrow night, with the scene shifting to Fifth Third Field in the Glass City. Right-hander Zach McAllister (8-10, 5.09), who was acquired by the Indians organization over the weekend to complete the Austin Kearns trade from July, is likely to start for Columbus against Toledo lefty Andy Oliver (1-3, 3.67).

Aeros Drop First 7-2 Before Rains Halt Second

Akron fell to Bowie 7-2 in the opening continuation game from July 28th, but rain played a factor once again in the Aeros’ plans as their nightcap with the Baysox was suspended in the bottom of the third inning. With the loss, Akron is now 64-63 while Bowie improves to 67-60.

The Aeros acted as the home team in the first game that was a continuation from July 28th originally scheduled in Akron. Because it was Bowie’s last scheduled trip to Akron, the game had to take place in Maryland.

The Baysox struck first in the top of the second when Steven Lerud scored on a sacrifice fly. One batter latter, Xavier Avery crossed home on a single by Greg Miclat. Bowie eventually pushed the score to 3-0 in the top of the third on a home run by Brandon Waring. Akron answered in the bottom half of the frame with a home run of its own on the bat of left fielder John Drennen.

The Aeros cut the deficit to one in the fifth when first baseman Beau Mills scored after catcher Miguel Perez reached on a fielder’s choice with two outs. It was the closest Akron would get as Bowie extended its lead when Avery scored again, this time on a sacrifice fly, in the sixth. One inning later, Baysox cleanup hitter Joseph Mahoney added a three-run home run for the final offense of the 7-2 game.

Left-handed starter Scott Barnes took the loss and dropped to 6-9 on the season. The Chicopee, Mass. native gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits with two home runs, six strikeouts, and four walks on 6.1 innings of work. Rick Zagone earned the win for the physical hosts to improve to 2-3 after giving up one run on two hits with a home run and two strikeouts in three innings.

Game two started but did not get very far before weather halted play until Tuesday evening. Play was suspended in the bottom of the third with two outs and the score tied at 0-0. The game will resume at 6:05 p.m. with right-handed pitcher Chen-Chang Lee (5-3, 3.47 ERA) starting the continuation. Southpaw Kelvin De La Cruz (4-6, 5.99 ERA) will start the originally scheduled game on Tuesday, which is now shortened to seven innings. Bowie’s starters have yet to be announced.

Keys Clip Kinston Comeback

Ronnie Welty's three-run homer capped a four-run sixth inning for Frederick in a 6-4 win over Kinston on Monday night at Grainger Stadium. The loss drops the Indians two games back in the race for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division.

The Keys got to Kinston starter Austin Adams in the top of the first inning when Kyle Hudson singled, stole second then scored on a Ronnie Welty RBI single. The K-Tribe tied the score at one in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a solo home run from Chun Chen. The home run was the fourth in a K-Tribe uniform for Chen.

Adams was chased from the game in the top of the fourth inning when Buck Britton gave Frederick a 2-1 lead with a solo home run. Adams (4-1) surrendered two runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two in his first loss with the K-Tribe.

Frederick blew open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning off of Kinston reliever David Roberts. Roberts gave up four hits in the inning, including a three-run home run from Ronnie Welty. Roberts allowed five runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Keys' starter Oliver Drake shut down the K-Tribe offense, holding them to a run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings for the victory. Drake (5-6) walked three and struck out three.

Kinston struck for a run in the eighth against Keys' reliever Brett Jacobsen. Bo Greenwell reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on catcher's indifference. Kyle Bellows hit an RBI single to right to score Greenwell and cut the lead to 6-2.

The K-Tribe started a rally in the ninth, as Abner Abreu led off with a double and scored on a Juan Diaz RBI single. Donnie Webb walked. Jeremie Tice flew out to the warning track in center for the second out. Bo Greenwell then bounced an RBI single to right to pull the K-Tribe within 6-4. Karexon Sanchez came to the plate as the go-ahead run, but grounded out to end the game.

Travis Turek threw three hitless innings in an outstanding relief appearance for the K-Tribe.

The K-Tribe continues their final homestand of the season with a $2 Tuesday at Historic Grainger Stadium. Game time 7pm as Marty Popham will take the mound for the K-Tribe.

Captains Lose Third Straight to Dayton

Kevyn Feiner drove in two of Dayton’s three runs on Monday night helping the Dragons to third straight win over the Captains 3-1. Lake County out hit Dayton 8-4 in the loss.

Greg Folgia led off the second inning off for Lake County, with a double over the centerfieler Justin Reed’s head. Roberto Perez grounded out to the shortstop to push Folgia over to third. Kyle Smith stepped in and Clayton first pitch would go wide and Folgia was able to score on the wild pitch giving Lake County a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second the Captains were on the bad end of another bizarre play. It was set up by a Vidal Nuno walk to Mark Fleury, followed by a pitch that hit Cameron Satterwhite. Frank Pfister with one out flared one out to left to load the bases. Nuno struck out Dominic D’Anna for out number two. Kevyn Feiner stepped in and hit a routine ground ball to shortstop Casey Frawley and threw out Feiner. Moments after the entire defense was just about in the dugout the umpire called them all back out and change the call to a base hit and an RBI that tied the game for Feiner because the ball hit the umpire’s toe; resulting in a dead ball.

Vidal Nuno hit Ryan LaMarre to start the third inning. Henry Rodriguez singled to leftfield putting two runners on. Fleury hit a deep fly ball to centerfield that allowed both runners to tag up. Cameron Satterwhite hit a ground ball to short, resulting in an RBI fielder’s choice giving Dayton a 2-1 lead as LaMarre scored.

In the fifth inning, Feiner hit his third homerun of the season. The solo homerun gave the Dragons a 3-1 lead. All three of Feiner’s homeruns this season has been off of Lake County pitching.

Clayton Shunick (2-1) picked up the win allowing just one run on five hits, striking out five. Vidal Nuno (5-7) suffered the loss, giving up all three runs on just four hits, striking out three. Doug Salinas picked up his seventh save of the season pitching the ninth, allowing just one hit and striking out two. Nick Kirk pitched three innings in relief and was fantastic for the Captains, not allowing a run or a hit, striking out six. Kirk struck out the first five hitters he faced in the game.

Lake County and Dayton will wrap up their four game series from Fifth Third Field at 7:00PM on Tuesday night. The Captains will start RHP Brett Brach (4-7) and will be matched up against RHP Tim Crabbe (2-6) for Dragons.

Reichenbach recorded the save working a scoreless 2.2 innings and striking out two. Brook Pounders suffered the loss for the Spikes pitching two innings of relief and giving up two runs on two hits.
