Game Recap 8/17: Carrasco On His A-Game

Clippers run past Yankees, 5-1

Things in Columbus were moving just a bit too fast for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Tuesday night, as the speedy top of the Clippers lineup and ace Carlos Carrasco led the hosts to a 5-1 victory at Huntington Park.

The first three Clippers reached base in the first inning, with Jose Constanza, who singled, scoring on a double from Ezequiel Carrera, who then scored on a double from Cord Phelps.

After the Yankees got on the board with an unearned run in the second, the Columbus speed took over again in the third. Constanza walked, stole a base and then scored on an error after Carrera singled. Carrera later scored on a Jared Goedert single. The stolen base for Constanza (his second on the night) tied him for the league lead with 32.

On the night, Constanza and Carrera reached base a total of six times, accounting for five of the team's 12 hits. Columbus added an insurance run in the eighth, when Drew Sutton doubled home Jordan Brown, who returned to the team Tuesday from Cleveland.

Carrasco (10-5) went seven innings to earn the victory, striking out six while scattering five hits and walking none. Josh Judy and Vinnie Pestano closed out the victory, with each tossing a perfect frame.

Game two of the four-game set gets going Wednesday night at 7:05, with lefty David Huff (7-0, 3.75) starting for Columbus, opposite right-hander Ivan Nova (11-3, 2.93).

Aeros Split Doubleheader

The Aeros split two games with the Reading Phillies Tuesday night after winning the opening continuation game 8-7, while dropping the second game 9-7 in front of 6,783 at FirstEnergy Stadium. The continuation game was originally started on July 25th, while the second game was rescheduled for seven innings. Akron now stands at 63-58 while Reading stands at 58-62.

The continuation game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth with the score tied 5-5 when rain halted play. Center fielder Jordan Henry began the game on a strong note as he doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the first. Akron continued to pounce on Phillies starter Ty Taubenheim in the second, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from left fielder John Drennen. Right fielder Jerad Head followed with a two-run homer to right on his first pitch. Reading responded as Kevin Mahar provided a solo home run with one out against left starter Kelvin De La Cruz. A bases loaded walk to Matt Rizzotti in the third then made the score 4-2. Akron added their final run on a single from second baseman Jason Kipnis in the fourth. De La Cruz left the game in the fourth after a pair of runs scored to tie the game before the rains came.

Reading resumed action tonight adding two more runs in the inning when Tagg Bozied hit a two RBI double. The Aeros responded when Head, who joined the team from Class AAA Columbus today, hit a three-run home run to take the lead 8-7.

Right-handed pitcher Rob Bryson earned his first win, and only decision, of the season with 2.2 innings pitched, two hits allowed, and three strikeouts. Southpaw Sergio Escalona (2-7) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on Head’s home run.

In the second game, Akron started scoring early with four runs in the first thanks to third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall’s RBI double and first baseman Beau Mills three-run home run. The R-Phils responded with a two-run homer by Bozied.

The Aeros added another in the top of the second when Kipnis doubled to left field scoring shortstop Cristo Arnal. Reading gained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Tuffy Gosewisch hit an RBI single, followed by Harold Garcia’s three-run home run to left field.

Akron tied the game 6-6 in the top of the fourth on an RBI single. Reading took the lead for good during their next at bat when Freddy Galvis scored on a wild pitch by lefty starter Matt Packer during Keoni De Renne’s plate appeance, who soon singled in Harold Garcia. Both teams added runs in the fifth to set up the final 9-7 score.

Packer took the loss after allowing all nine runs on nine hits with three home runs, a walk, and a strikeout. Yohan Flande (9-7) earned the win with five innings pitched, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits, one home run, one strike out and one walk.

Akron is now two games back of Bowie for the wild card, but caught up with Harrisburg in third place in the Western Division after the Senators lost to Erie 4-3. Akron will continue their series with the Phillies Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Lefty Scott Barnes (6-8, 4.66 ERA) takes the mound for the Aeros against Reading’s J.C. Ramirez (3-3, 5.37 ERA).

K-Tribe Sweeps Double Dip from Potomac

The K-Tribe swept a double dip from Potomac, beating the Nationals 3-1 and 5-3 Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the wins, the K-Tribe is just 1 ½ games out of the final playoff spot in the Carolina League Southern Division.

Donnie Webb's go-ahead two-run single in the fourth inning sent the Indians to a 3-1 win over Potomac in game one of Tuesday night's doubleheader in Kinston.

Potomac went in front in the first inning of game one against Indians starter Austin Adams. With two out in the frame, Derek Norris hit a solo homer to left to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead. Adams would settle down after that, giving up just two hits and one earned run in five innings of work.

The K-Tribe responded in the second against P-Nats hurler Danny Rosenbaum. Juan Diaz walked and Doug Pickens singled to left. Alex Castillo then blooped a single to left to score Diaz and (tie the game at one. Donnie Webb then hit an infield single but Pickens was thrown out at home trying to advance an extra base. Webb was 2-for-4 in game one.

In the top of the fourth inning, Kinston put the pressure on again with a Diaz lead-off single. After a Pickens walk, Castillo delivered a sacrafice bunt. With the infield pulled in, Donnie Webb then delivered a high chopper over the left side to drive in both Pickens and Diaz, giving Kinston a 3-1 lead.

Adams (4-0) pitched five innings for the win, giving up a run on two hits. He walked four and struck out four. Of the seven earned runs Adams has allowed with the K-Tribe, six of them have been the result of home runs.

Chris Jones pitched a scoreless final two innings for the save, giving up one hit.

In game two, Potomac's Francisco Soriano led off game two with a home run to right field off of Kinston pitcher Marty Popham to put the P-Nats ahead 1-0.

Bo Greenwell walked to lead off the bottom of the inning for Kinston. Karexon Sanchez then reached on a two-base error on first baseman Tyler Moore. Kyle Bellows lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Greenwell and tie the game at one. Chun Chen then ripped an RBI double to the gap in left center to give the K-Tribe a 2-1 lead. With two-out, Juan Diaz delivered the big blow, a two-run shot to dead center that cleared the 25-foot high batter's eye and put Kinston ahead 4-1. Diaz joins Bellows and Nate Recknagle as the only Indians to hit it over the batter's eye this season.

Sanchez was ejected from the game in the second inning for arguing a called third strike. He became the first K-Tribe player ejected from a game this season.

The K-Tribe would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Ronald Rivas led off with a walk, stole second, and then scored on an RBI single by Doug Pickens.

Marty Popham had a solid start for Kinston, but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth inning. Three singles, two walks and a hit batter tallied two runs in the frame, cutting the Kinston lead to 5-3. Potomac had a golden opportunity to take the lead later in the inning, when Carolina League home run leader Tyler Moore came to the plate with the bases loaded. A ten pitch at-bat, ended with a Moore strikeout as Popham escaped the inning with Kinston leading by two. Popham gave up six hits and three runs in five innings of work. Popham (3-4) struck out six and walked two for the win. Brian Grening pitched a perfect sixth for his second hold of the season. Cory Burns struck out three in the ninth inning for his Carolina League leading 24th save of the season.

The K-Tribe returns to Historic Grainger Stadium for game four of the five game series Wednesday at 7pm. T.J. McFarland (10-4, 2.74) will take the hill for Kinston.

Note: Lake County and Mahoning Valley both had scheduled off days on Tuesday.
