Barfield Outrighted

Infielder Josh Barfield was outrighted to the Triple-A Columbus roster on Tuesday as he cleared waivers and was removed from the 40-man roster. He was already in Columbus, but this was more of a paper move to remove him from the 40-man roster. The 40-man roster currently stands at 33 players (three more are on the 60-day DL).

This makes more sense than what the team did last year, when they lost Snyder and Santos on waivers in September. There must be lots of waiver claims flying around in early August, making it easier to sneak a player through. On the other hand, the team has to use irrevocable waivers to outright a player, not the waivers typically used in post-deadline deals, right?

Yes, anytime you want to remove a player off the 40-man and outright him to the minors they are placed on irrevocable waivers.

The fact no one bit on him, even with a dirt cheap contract and still young, shows how much his stock has plummetted to being virtually worthless.
